"Oldtime Flatfooting", performed by Stephanie Coleman & Cleek Schrey (www.myspace.com/cleekschrey www.myspace.com/stephaniecolemanmusic) with Nic Gareiss & Matthew Olwell in concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions (www.imtfolk.org), Dance Exchange, Takoma Park, Maryland, USA on November 12, 2011.
Stephanie Coleman, Cleek Schrey and Nic Gareiss come together as a trio in the great tradition of Appalachian dance and double-fiddling. From Chicago, Steph fiddles with the all-female string band Uncle Earl. From Virginia, Cleek fiddles in the string band Bigfoot and both plays and flat-foots with Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble.
Originally from Michigan, Nic has danced with Bruce Molsky, Liz Carroll, and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh.
Cleek and Stephanie began playing together after both moving to the unlikely old-time music hotbed of Brooklyn, NY. A reunion with Nic in Cork, Ireland spurred the trio on with the mission of exploring Appalachian fiddle and dance to its very edges. Their music eschews fusion and embraces repertoire, seeking to probe the corners, hollows and curvatures of traditional American music and dance in search of new possibilities of interpretation. IN this video they are accompied by legendary dancer Matthew Olwell.
Sound: Dave Richardson

I just love this smooth understated style of clogging. It blends with the music like another instrument, which it is.

I think it is the tune sometimes used with "The Joviall Broome Man." The Baltimore Consort rocks the heck out of the tune (also with the text of "The Joviall Broome Man"), and they identify the tune as "Slow Men of London."

This style of dancing was invented in 1829 when a man about to be hanged for horse thievery was observed, with a noose around his neck and hands tied behind his back, stomping on an ant nest situated underneath the tree limb from which he was to be hanged from. While waiting for his execution the ants attacked and he began a stomping, scraping the ground and skipping from foot to foot. Now the bunch of folks fixing to hang this man happened to be musicians and began to play a well known song from the time because it fit perfectly with the rhythm of the stomping, scraping, shuffling and skipping. Anyway, after they hanged him they all took turns on the ant nest trying to master those stomps, scrapes and skips. The horse thief of course was an indian fella from the flatfoot tribe and, well, flatfoot dancing was born.

that's horse crap. It's been around longer than that. It's a mix of Irish, old Celtics, and Appalachian Immigrants . Anglo-Saxon Mountain music. This was done when the colonies were barely here, before that with the Celts and Different styles in Northwest Europe.

Seems like in that old clip they are just doing similar moves but don't really seem to be dancing WITH the music. These guys here also seem to be flailing their arms about quite a bit and have more moves.
