In this video, I lend a hand to an oldtime logger and friend who demonstrates his technique for hand-splitting huge western red cedar logs down their length using only simple tools.
I've included the full process showing how these enormous logs are broken down into small enough pieces to be milled into lumber on his sawmill. Look for the next video in this series showing the boards being created from these pieces, coming soon to Everyday Projects.

He's got talent and energy for this type of work, infact, when we were pounding the wedges I took several breaks while he pressed on. I'll make some more videos eventually (with his permission) and get them posted here. Take care

I'm 30 years his junior and I can't keep up to his pace. He has lived a life outdoors and has benefitted from the fresh air and hard work so essential to a long and fruitful life.

These logs were salvaged from a road construction project and would have been burned as waste had we not gone to get them.

@@EverydayProjectsgood work! That looked like clear red cedar. I have a sample from a red cedar shingle, and it has 438 growth rings, so I'm amazed by Giant Arborvitae. I have an Alaskan mill set-up and a Stihl 066 magnum, so I have milled some lumber by hand.

This guy is a legend. He has worked like this every day of his life. You can see me stopping for a break while he just plowed ahead. His father lived the same, hard-working life and did projects until well past 100. There is a lesson in that. Thanks for stopping by, Marc.

He played me out and he never even broke a sweat. Amazing what a life of hard work can do for one's health. He's a very fine man and is as tough as nails. No sitting around in pyjamas for this guy. He's up and out the door every morning of life.

I have never seen that done before, it was very interesting. Your friend made it look very easy, my granddad is 95 and he is also very active. How old was that tree?

There are many lessons to learn from this video: Hard work and a healthy lifestyle will see most people achieve an old age; Being active is good for your mind and body; Almost any task is achievable if you perservere; Friends are an important part of life; Cedar is beautiful. These logs are probably somewhere between 300 and 600 years old (we didn't count the rings). These particular logs were salvaged from a road-building project nearby, where a section of forest was opened up to build a safer road along a cliff. There are many huge western red cedar trees in this part of Vancouver Island, Canada. (as well as towering Sitka Spruce, Hemlock and Douglas Fir). Check out this website for some history and photos of some of the giants found near where I live. www.lucascometto.com/cascadia-vancouver-island

@@zandemen There’s a jack used by loggers that looks every bit like a bumper jack but made for the bush. It’s called a Gilchrist Jack. Very common in BC at least they used to be.
