Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 21/22 Manchester United Premier League Tactics Explained

Welcome back guys! Today we’re looking at how Solskjaer set his Man Utd team up this season.
The summer of 2021 has seen Manchester United take more steps forward under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, addressing some problem positions and giving opportunities to squad players to impress. Signing Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Let’s take a look at the midfield which has been a problem area for Man Utd in terms of having a consistent solid pairing. What we’ve seen in preseason from Solskjaer has been a more adventurous pairing in the double pivot, often with a more creative player like Paul Pogba or Donny van de Beek playing next to a more conservative midfielder like Fred, McTominay or Matic. This combination offers more of an attacking threat without completely changing the system that Solskjaer and the players have been working on for the past couple of seasons.

How the midfield operates will be tactically very interesting this season and will be the part of the team that sees the most change. For the most part, the other nine positions are largely locked down with perhaps the goalkeeper and striker position the only two where there is genuine competition for the best eleven. But I expect the double pivot to be constantly adapted to fit the situation.

Donny van de Beek is the player that will benefit the most from the uncertainty and Solskjaer’s more attacking approach. The Dutchman struggled for minutes last season because he was competing with Bruno Fernandes, the best number 10 in the world for Solskjaer’s system.
But he should get more opportunities to impress this time around. Donny has been working hard on his physique in the off season, trying to add muscle to help him cope with the demands of the Premier League. Combine this with a full season of experience and a preseason to impress and Donny could be a real difference maker.

With a fully fit squad, I expect we’ll see the left and right wing occupied by Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho respectively, although they’ll freely rotate positions. Tactically, United will continue to attack in their 3-3-4, focusing their play out wide. With this duo on the pitch, United’s attacks should become more balanced, with more play coming down the right hand side - although the left will still be favoured due to the attacking output of Luke Shaw. We should see more of the same as last season. Building out from the back and looking to create space for their forwards to operate in. If direct balls aren’t on they’ll continue to attack through the wide areas which should see frequent options to switch the point of attack. And this is the aspect of United’s play that will be much improved by the new signings, given Varane’s exceptional long range passing and the two incredibly effective wingers in 1 v 1 situations.

What I love about donny, as someone who wasn’t like a lot of utd fans from last year saying he was wonderful whenever he played…. I think it will be one of the best seasons in premier league history. Man Utd have improved in major areas but still are in the market for a DM. If Man Utd manage to buy a quality DM then they will have a very good chance. Liverpool just need to improve their midfield but I do not personally see them winning the prem this season. Man city.... obviously title contenders for obvious reasons and on top of that, Kane to Man City is going ahead. And finally, Chelsea.... they played very well under tuchel last season but needed a clinical ST. Now they have bought Lukaku, their problems are sorted and are huge title contenders

If the cdm doesn't come in then we have to try and play matic for 45 minutes and smash teams 3/4 to nil by half time and hold on for dear life for the rest of the game when matic gets subbed, the Sancho/Wan Bissaka relationship ahead is going to be sensational I can see them lighting it up, donny will have a massive season in the box to box role but could cover cdm gaps to help matic legs

Dave, I think with Sancho the right wing will operate fine. AWB can come inside as a defensive mid while attacking and van de beek can attack from the right side, be it short passes or occupying half spaces.

i hate to say it dave misses with this video. he keeps talking about the free role that bruno has in the 4-3-2-1 and says that brunos creativity is limited on the left of midfield. alluding to the fact that playing on the left side of midfield limits his creativity on the left but if we take peps city as an example its clear and obvious how bernardo, foden, de bruyne is allowed to interchange with winger and strikers, aswell as making runs in behind. not to mention kdb getting assists from both sides of midfield. the left side of midfield is his tactical starting position, not his role in the team.

Love having real squad depth to play two sets of 11 (especially with all the loony cup games). Hoping for big season from DVB, too good a player to fail. Biggest question (and I love Ole), will he actually rotate players in T/S weeks against weaker PL teams or run Maguire, Bruno and Shaw into the ground again? Who cares if Bruno doesn't get as many goals/assists if it benefits the team as a whole we should switch to 4-3-3. We are Manchester United FC, not Bruno Fernandes FC. If he truly is a world class player he will be able to play well in a CM role. Yeah he won't put up crazy numbers stat-wise but he will be just as good and as crucial for us playing alongside Donny or Pogba as 8's. We see with Pep's city that Foden, Silva, KDB, etc. still interchange with strikers and wingers and make runs in behind while playing in a 4-3-3. 4-3-3 will improve us, with the only small downside being Bruno won't put up crazy numbers because he won't be playing as a second striker.

For teams that play the low block Van De Beek and Pogba will be essential. They should be paired with one McTominay Fred or Matic depending on the scenario.Against teams who are better I'd play McTominay/Fred with Matic as we need a pressing midfielder but we also need someone better on the ball who can keep possession which is Matic.The Issue with Matic is his legs giving way so pairing him with Fred or McTominay allows him to play be more of a conductor.McTominay and Fred should only play together in games where we want to hit teams on the break.Both however should still improve in terms of possession

If Ole chooses this defence, WamBa, Bailly, Varane & Shaw, 4 defenders who can defend, we would have put that defence against any opposition out there and come out on top. We would have been possibly the top team in Europe with Pace, Power & Good Organisation with Put Pogba as Captain. Sorry Dave but you've got it all wrong with McFred in my personal opinion. They aren't tactically sound enough and are way too defensive and pragmatic. We should buy a proper CDM and play them alongside Pogba and Bruno. Although if we don't get a CDM we're screwed and have no chance at a title.

The biggest issue with United is that we don’t play football in the middle of the park. We rather play the ball on the winds to try to move forward. That why we can’t win against team that sit back cause the is no space to go around. This is Ole problem from he been here. If you watch the top team, they play the ball in the middle of the park to supply the forwards. It’s going to be a long season with no trophies again.

Sancho brings the right wing to life. Varane tightens the defense and ensures a high land. As a result I doubt the mc - Fred double pivot will be a fixture any more. It will be one of the or Matic with Pogba or Van debeek
