Peace Conference, June 2024. "And despite some of us around this table having different opinions on how to exactly get to peace for Ukraine, let there be no mistake... we are totally united at a shared vision on principles, on values, on decency. In 1917, Russia collapsed mainly because of military disaster, combined with economic difficulties; in 1991, the USSR collapsed entirely because of economic rot. If I were a betting man I would put my money this time around on catastrophic economic failure (or `tsunami', as Konstantin Somoilov calls it) closely followed by military disintegration, but it is awfully close to call. Either way I am hoarding popcorn. Another great speaker, BTW.
@davidrusen99383 ай бұрын
Remember "no good deed goes unpunished". Around 1990 when USSR disintegrated the entire western and Rich world nearly instantly welcomed Russia with generous open arms into the family of law abiding Democratic Nations. Concessions and investments poured in. With technology, advisors, and above all inclusion in world markets For Russian exports. We were hoping to encourage Russia to stay free and Democratic. Russia and Gorbachev had even confirmed their transformation, seemingly, when the 1990 reactionary coup was quickly put down. Thus the starving penniless Russians were able to develop some prosperity. Exactly the same story with communist China. Exactly. More or less a replay of the Marshall plan: the day the shooting stops we start loving our deadly enemy. Konstantin and many others predict economic collapse of Russia with extreme poverty. Then citizens will unite and overthrow their murderous greedy leaders. Let's hope so. But Russians are extremely adept at living in dire poverty. They can go decades with nothing but a bowl of soup by day and a bottle of vodka by night. They did it for at least 70 years. And ten centuries before then. I'm afraid they won't overthrow Putin to get sanctions removed.
@normandduern24133 ай бұрын
@@davidrusen9938 Valid points. But then again Russians did not actually overthrow the USSR either, more like: it all got so weak and rotten they just all walked away from it such that the first breeze blew it over. Russians do seem to be incredibly resigned to oppressive regimes, but they do seem to need to believe in the regime at least a little for it to survive. They did stop believing in the Tsars in 1917, and the tsars fell. They did stop believing in the USSR some time before 1991, and finally it just fell apart. Will Russians revolt to get sanctions removed? Probably not, and indeed Konstantin never to my knowledge has ever predicted this; in fact, quite the contrary, he has been consistently pessimistic as to the likelihood of Russians ever uniting and overthrowing anything at any point. Rather, they will beyond a certain limit sit with their arms folded and eyes averted while everything around them falls into ruin. When westerners get fed up, they revolt; when Russians have had enough . . . they withdraw into self-induced paralysis. Either way, the regime falls. What replaces it is another question.

By the end of the Khrushchev era it was obvious that the communist experiment had failed. The Soviet Union struggled on, but the optimism that after everything that the people had gone through, they would finally overtake the West in living standards was shown to be an empty promise. The stagnation that followed probably made a collapse at some point inevitable.
@terryhand3 ай бұрын
@@davidrusen9938 I tend to agree that Russians won't overthrow Putin to get sanctions removed. Sanctions almost always unite a population against the countries imposing the sanctions. However, that is not the point of the sanctions. The point is to restrict Putin's war effort. They should have been stronger from the beginning.

Onya for this. My advice is to pester your representation saying "Let's get in there and help in any way we can." Ring them up and yak at them, or their aides--whoever picks up the phone. It might not seem effective, but trust me, pollies are extremely sensitive to the issues of their electorate. Be smart with your messaging. You need to tailor your message to the person. If they're LNP they're going to have very different opinions, concerns, and sensitivities than if they're Labor or Jackie Lambie or whatever. (If they're One Nation, God help you.) I'm a Yank, and my Rep is MAGA, so I always make it sound like I'm one of his voters. I say things like "Biden is a pantywaist bitch and he's too weak to take a stand. We need to make sure Ukraine is getting the resources they need in spite of the weak sniveling Democrats!" Obviously, if I come off as someone who votes AGAINST him, he won't give the faintest fuck about my opinion, so I am sure to make it sound like I'm MAGA too, and that at least one of his MAGA constituents believes we should fully support Ukraine. If you're in the Gladstone electorate, it looks like your MP is Glenn Butcher, from Labor. You can also apply specific pressure about the aluminium partnership. Butcher is minister for regional development which means he has intimate familiarity with the Rusal Rio Tinto partnership. Being from Labor, he's liable to have human rights as a priority. IF you tell him or his aide that you find it absolutely unacceptable to have a Russian company operating in your backyard, well, Butcher is someone with real power to influence that situation. He could potentially even affect it like "Hey, we don't want to work with this pariah country that's raping civilians so I'm going to push this partnership to Vedanta instead." (Or whoever does aluminium bc Vedanta is copper.) Here's Butcher's website. Have a quick look at what he's about: www.glennbutchermp.com.au/ Here's his number. Ring him up once a week or so: 07 4904 1100

Ukraine starving Russian front line troops of food, fresh soldiers, arms and fuel can weaken the front line enough it can collapse. In fact, cutting supply of fuel can affect the other 3. This requires a massive continuous input of reconnaissance and intel combined with being ready for medium range strikes on short notice. When I hear about 30,000 troops gather in the Donbas just behind the front lines, it means these supply lines are not being cut. The more Russia’s front lines are starved, the fewer Ukrainian soldiers are needed to maintain and take territory. How to make this happen? I have no idea.

They had been used in the Aberdeen testing grounds before 2001. The earliest was in the 1980's and if you notice the way more advanced drones being used Post 9/11/2001 attacks on America. What the world does not know is how far American weapons systems have advanced. What you see in video games is pretty close to what is being used in real life from the body mech were you can carry three times your body weight without breaking a sweat to drones evacuating people by remote. We had tesla coils being used for sentaries. Our weapons platforms using lasers and other new tech is 10 to 20 years ahead of russia.

Information warfare is the last type of warfare that Russians are any good at. Combined arms warfare - fail. Air warfare - fail.. Joint operations warfare - fail. Maneuver warfare - fail. Armored warfare - fail. Logistics warfare - fail... The Russians have miserably failed, even in the types of warfare the West thought Russia is at least modestly good at... This is of course the armored warfare which has been the basis of the Soviet/Russian military power since the WW2. Russia always had a massive number of tanks and they've even held those stupid coreographed tank Olympics with other nations like Belarus and China... But when the shooting war started and tanks and soldiers were put to the real test, it all broke apart... Air warfare was never the Russian forte, but we all expected them to do more.. And until the last 6 months or so when the Russian air force started to use those KAB series glide bombs, the impact of the Russian Air force was non existent beside a few cruise missiles being fired from the long range bombers hundreds of miles outside of the Ukrainian airspace. So, the information warfare is all they're left with. And the reason why is because we can't fight the information war the same way they're fighting because of the fundamental difference between the dictatorial type of the Russian state and the inherent weakness of democracies where we can't lie and hush the free press like they can.... But thankfully information warfare is much less lethal than any other type, so may the killing of the Orcs continue.

Who could've predicted russia's collapse in 1915, 1916? Do you not realize that there is at this moment a humanitarian disaster in Europe? Millions of Ukrainian refugees in the EU and internally in Ukraine! 1/2 of Ukraine's infrastructure has been destroyed, and the destruction through russia's neverending bombing continues. Your 'concern' is misplaced. World hunger; Ukraine supplies wheat to 400 million globally and russia tried to destroy this trade (as you know), luckily they have failed, though they still steal Ukrainian grain. The wheat harvest in russia is predicted to be very bad this year, even more reason to help Ukraine. russia will not starve whatever the outcome of this war. You talk about 'serious ripples globally', well hello, they started on Feb 24, 2022! For some normalcy to return to the global order it is necessary that putin's regime be defeated.
