She is all delicacy and innocence and freshness. An ideal Giselle. Techical issues can be coached, but her spirit and beauty are inborn.

What incredible stamina and determination she shows during this long and grueling rehearsal. The coach doesn’t even let her catch her breath between repetitions. She’s a true prima ballerina.

Olesya, you're "huggable." Has anyone tell you that, apart from your husband? You leap off the screen and beg to be embraced. Audrey Hepburn possessed that remarkable quality, as well. Bless you...

The Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra will tour the U.S. and Canada in Sept. and Oct., 2015, and I hope to have tickets for all their performances so that I may witness the incomparable Ms. Novikova at close range, ideally from $350 orchestra seats.

1:44 what is this movement called?
@normamimosa59913 жыл бұрын
Please! It is now called the Mariinsky. Perhaps some research on the man, Kirov, to understand just how objectionable that name is today.

I must confess that I like you far more than your Mariinsky colleague, Alina Somova, but I do not possess the necessary classical ballet vocabulary to tell you why.

She is gorgeous but I don't like the way she whips the leg around to attitude in the renversé without doing a full rond de jambe. cuts the movement really short i think. the rest i like :)
@normamimosa59913 жыл бұрын
I hear what you are saying. Many Vaganova trained dancers cut the grand rond de jambe (pretty sure you don't mean a rond de jambe) in this combination. I believe it is because of the musical timing. It is very fast. In fact, in some ballet technique methods, renversé is taught straight from attitude. Here's a video of, perhaps the top ballerina of our lifetime, Uliana Lopatkina, doing the same variation with the same style of renversé. I think you'll see from this, the construction is deliberate rather than not executed well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6CTlX-GZ5qqgs0

Artistically, she is excellent. Her movements are very graceful and fluid. However technically she's a little uneven.

PennyPie this is a very old video. Now Olesya’s technique is as perfect as her artistry
@normamimosa59913 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you could point exactly her technical difficulties, because I have watched this video, as well as following Olesya over the years, and her technique is impeccable. A Vaganova trained dancer does not get into the Mariinsky Ballet without impeccable technique. So please be specific, and let us know where you were trained, and where she is uneven. Give specifics in pointing out the lack of technique in each step or combination. This is a rehearsal, so of course it will not be a full-out performance. All dancers only develop great artistry after years of stage experience. There is no exception to that. Olesya Novikova has always had good artistry, but her artistry now is breathtaking and unique. In her earlier years, when this video was made, her artistry was hesitant.

@@normamimosa5991 First of all, I'm not bothering to read all of your tirade. Calm down, don't take it so personally. And have another look 1:56. But compare it with Marinela Nunez or Diana Vishneva for examples. This dancer struggles a little bit. Whereas the others are fluid with their turns. Just an opinion and observation for this video only. I don't follow her career as you do.

She seems to be very self-effacing, and I doubt that is a typical personality characteristic of ballerinas.

At this point Novikova what was wobbly in her technique. This is not a religion. We can all see. Mariinsky has been very rocky in the past and there was a point when the women could not do more than two pirouettes is n pointe. It was a scandal. Gymnastics had too much of an influence in the training of the dancers and that made them weaker and more prone to injury. They seem to be recovering from this low point. Are the still Russians the undefeated best in the world in ballet? In my opinion yes, even with all of the defects of their accommodation to gymnastic tastes. Being very practical people they seem to be getting rid of some of the excesses. The extensions are still too high at two high at great cost to strength and artistry. Novikova is OK. I don’t find her to be unforgettable . But an artist grows and improves and she has a lot to work with. We don’t have to lie down agog at every Russian that walks down the pike. Even though they are the undisputed best in ballet.
