Dalila is a "role"...., like Juliette, Lady Macbeth, or even Abigail in Abigail's Party.....Each interpreter, gives it their own slant, and breathes NEW life into it......that's what makes music and the arts, endlessly fascinating, and why Shakespeare, Verdi , Puccini and Saint-Saens, will never die............We all have our particular favourites.....but to survive.....we need to embrace change and reinterpretation........JUST ENJOY THEM ALL!!!.......KZbin GIVES US THAT OPPORTUNITY.......FREE!!!!......HAVE WE ANY IDEA HOW LUCKY WE ARE?.........Sorry.....Just a thought, fuelled by the current Corona crisis, and an extra glass of wine ot two!.......Keep safe my friends.....xx

About Callas and Ponselle, I read somewhere that being in New York in her prime youth, Maria used to listen to the radio broadcast performances of Rosa, her ear stuck on the radio ?

Your opinion is well founded, however, Borodina and Gergiev maintain just enough of the pulse, while emphasizing the suspension of time that S-S creates. Borodina has the ability and sense of "authority" in this role (her favorite as she has stated in interviews) to accomplish this. You should also avoid Jessye Norman's "Mon Coeur..." which is stupendous, sinister and very slow! Recommended for everyone else!

Why compare to callas. Not only does this lady have the vocal development but the artistry is there as well. Just enjoy!! If you want to hear callas listen to callas!!

@muatlas you are right. callas never had the gorgeous tone that borodina has. callas was an amazing singer, but a beautiful voice she did not have.

Cannot be compared to Callas's performance, but quite beautiful none-the-less.

I adore Borodina..but Callas brought to this aria a certain kind of vulnerability that most don't find in the character of Dalila....after all, Dalila did love Samson but she was controlled by politics. Callas brings a kind of faltering quality to Dalila's music. A feeling that at any moment, she can give into her true love. But she cannot...that is the tragedy that Callas understood.
