I review the new Olight Diffuse! This is a unique pentagonal flashlight that runs off any 14500/AA cell. Good to see Olight allowing the use of non-proprietary batteries and charging!

Olight Diffuse Transcript
General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
• So this is a brand new light that Olight has just released - it's the 'Diffuse' - an odd name and even stranger design, compared to other Olight models. It has a hexagonal shape, which reminds me of an oversized pencil, but classier. It might be mistaken for a vape or cosmetics. Either way, it looks and feels great… and surprisingly, accepts non-proprietary batteries.
• What you get in the box - manual, USB-C charging cable, lanyard, 14500 cells.
• Comparison with Acebeam Pokelit AA, TS10, Mateminco FT01
Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel and reflector
• Solid construction. I like how the light is made of one simple machined part, tail-cap. Perfectly machined with no imperfections. Anodizing is slightly glossy and could be slippery with sweaty hands. No knurling. The pentagonal design means that the light will not roll around on a slanted surface.
• The tailcap has a cutout for a tritium tube which is a nice addition. Unscrew to remove the battery. The light is operated by a single metal side switch that also functions as a battery indicator (green, orange, red).
• TIR lens paired with what appears to be an Osram P9. The lens is slightly recessed in the bezel.
• Comes with a normal 14500 button top cell. Accepts any non-proprietary 14500 and primary AA cells too.
UI - modes
• Click and hold from off for moonlight mode. Click and hold to cycle LMH.
• Double press for turbo.
• Triple press for strobe.
Performance - total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
• CCT, CRI, Ceiling bounce test
• Reasonably floody beam with a nice diffused hotspot.
Considerations
• As of the making of this video, there is no high CRI option - something that is important to some of you when selecting an EDC light.
• 700-lumen max output - although this is respectable, it's not a pocket rocket by any means, but that wasn't the intention behind this light in the first place. It's amazingly bright for its size.
• No clip - it does come with a lanyard though. Would've liked a magnet on the tail too.
Verdict
This is Olight's answer to the classic 14500/AA EDC - and I like how they've given it a unique spin with the pentagonal design, tritium cut-out, and ability to use multiple power sources. It's the perfect light to keep in your pocket, handbag, glove box, and around the house. It also packs a punch for its size!

I own this and the Baton 4. This is perfect for a glove box, purse or backpack emergency light. The Baton 4 is the best EDC light ever made.

Just getting into flashlights and found your channel. I’m also R/G colorblind so I’m glad to know there’s a flashlight channel out there to get that perspective from.

Hi mate, there's a few of us out there :D I only worry about CRI if I'm making art videos on other channel... I prefer overall brightness otherwise. Catch you around.

You say getting into flashlights? Well I just started getting good flashlights, but we have all used flashlights all our lives. I have this, but you should try out a Baton 4. Incredible power in a tiny package.

I have the ARMYTEK PRIME C2 PRO MAX MAGNET USB WARM and it has quickly become my favorite of the larger EDC because it shines so much and far with many power choices. I'd love to see what you think of it and a comparison between it in warm and cold light. There isn't a video on it on KZbin that wasn't made by Armytek themselves and it seems to be completely missed by flashlight fans.

Interesting, I'll reach out to armytek and see if they can provide a sample. I reviewed their crystal pro the other day

@@DarrenYeoYT Yes it shines more, wider and longer than the Olight Seeker 4 pro which was a bit of a disappointment for me. Ask if you can have both warm and cold light. I saw that video and I also have the lamp. I to videos on with another account and there I follow you. Greetings from a cold Finland.

@@henriksjolund8162 I have an armytek Doberman Pro which is one of my favourite tactical lights. Very comfortable to use. Finland! I hope to visit someday - that's basically the other side of the world for us in Australia. Thanks for your support.

@@DarrenYeoYT I've always liked flashlights but I'm new to collecting flashlights. i have a Dobermann Pro warm light, Prime C2 Pro Max warm light, Wizard C2 Pro Nichia,Crystal Pro, zippy Extended Set, Olight Warrior X 3 cool light, Seeker 4 Pro natural light. Dobermann is fun to use as you can flash it however you want. Prime max has become my favorite of them. I am thinking of buying a Prime warm light with. Yes, it is a bit between Australia and Finland.

Great review! I asked my wife if she likes the look and description of this flashlight (since the Diffuse is marketed towards women), and she said she does. Might be a good gift to throw into a purse!

Yeah it looks like it'd fit in with some of the cosmetics etc. that women carry around in their bags haha. They may offer it in different colours too. Thank you man.

Nice review of a nice flashlight! The physical design and user interface both seem to be well thought out. I love the idea of a flashlight that won't roll around and that goes in your pocket rather than being clipped to it. A tail magnet could mess up credit cards if you keep it in the same pocket as your wallet, so I think it was smart of them to forgo the magnet. I just wish Olight used neutral white high Ra and R9 CRI emitters in more of their EDC lights. For indoor use, I'll always trade off lumens for a more pleasing white with better color rendition. Although I surely understand why you wouldn't care about that. Other minor tweaks I'd make to this specific flashlight: • A layer of anti-reflective coated glass to protect the plastic TIR optic from scratches. With no clip, we can assume this lives in a pocket, probably sharing space with keys, etc. • I find it a bit weird to have a 3 sided tail cap on a 5 sided flashlight. Why not make the cap 5-sided too? • Option to auto-lock the flashlight a minute or so after it's turned off, so you don't have to remember to lock it every time you put it in your pocket. I wish Olight offered more customization to their UI. For example, ZebraLight lets you choose any one of 12 different lumen outputs for each setting, and ReyLight lets you choose one of four mode groups, enable or disable moonlight, enable or disable memory, and decide whether to go through the levels in order from low to high or vice versa.

Those are some great suggestions and yes - I'd feel more comfortable with AR glass on the lens, few manufacturers do this. Hope they keep going down this path and create some other interesting EDC lights.

I'd have liked it to have the olight magnetic charger. I still like it though. Thanks for doing this review

Did a regular AA battery work for you? I just tried Eneloops and fresh alkaline AAs and neither worked. Worked great with the included battery.

Hi I've just received mine i tried a fully charged NMIH in it and low med and high worked for about ten seconds then it goes into just a two level light with no strobe, can you Please try yours as Olight don't say any levels for other battery types.
@DarrenYeoYT
@DarrenYeoYT 9 ай бұрын
Hi Murray, ok I tried - with NiMH, it goes into L-H mode only (no strobe). But with normal alkaline AA cell, L-M-H (no strobe). The driver probably detects voltage of the cell, but isn't able to boost it to support those higher modes.

Nice review, but: 1 It's an extrusion, not a machined part. 2 It's painted, not anodized. 👍
