A lot of the argument that I heard seemed to be confused on simple geographical misunderstanding, as directly north of Richmond is D.C., so it's not a blue/red thing, it's a politician thing. I think Vin is oversimplifying things, I’m pretty sure the point of the lyric was not to shout anyone down with condemnation and disapproval who is self-medicating, (Vin is also assuming that most obese people are obese people due to the consequences of their coping mechanism) I think the issue homeboy is trying to point out is that most people in this country haven’t been educated in any meaningful way when it comes to diet, food related sicknesses, dangerous ingredients, or cooking in general… so it stands to reason that they don’t know how to shop for ingredients that they can build into a meal, and instead they shop for frozen foods, convenience meals, and treats. If that’s the case then it’s only a matter of time before you start to notice that people that got on welfare weighing in at 200 pounds are weighing in at 300 pounds six months later, this means that the welfare isn’t helping them, it’s hurting them, as well as throwing gas on the dumpster fire that is the pharmaceutical industry in the process, my instincts tell me that if you asked Oliver what he meant he would tell you welfare is a good thing being applied in a bad way, and only certain food should be available to you if EBT is your method of payment… lunch meat, cans of soup, eggs, ground beef, chicken breast…. Things like ice cream, pizza rolls, frozen white castle sliders, and everlasting gobstoppers should be off-limits, he’s not discounting anyone’s pain, he’s pointing out what’s causing it on both sides

Wow, I've watched so many reviews of this song and everyone understood it up until this one. This includes people of different races, political backgrounds, from different countries, etc. He's not talking about Democrats. He's talking about ALL politicians in DC (R & D). North of Richmond = DC. All of them. He just released a song about wars being one of the problem in this whole messed up system. I'm fairly sure he would agree with your points about the forever wars. It's not an either/or. He contrasted starving homeless while others are sitting at home with so much junk food that they're morbidly obese. Even this is a critique of the system, not the individuals. The govt wants people unhealthy & eating trash food. And then talked about so many working themselves to death and/or battling depression. All of these things are problems. The island reference was so obviously saying that politicians are neglecting hardworking Americans while they do horrendous things to children. And then it got swept under the rug. He wasn't saying to make the trafficking issue a lower proority. So many people refuse to even address this. He had courage shining light on this issue. Yes, he's talking about inflation, but also misappropriation of tax dollars. And yes, I believe this historically high inflation rate that we're all dealing with is one of the reasons this song resonated with so many millions of people. It's the right song and right message at the right time. He is not a Republican. He is not a Democrat. This song is very much about class issues. The English language is a very good format for poetry and music because of the wind meaning of many words. This allows for more possibilities to play on words.
