Oliver encounters the Artful Dodger on the streets of London and he offers him a place to stay in this iconic musical number "Consider Yourself".
Watch Oliver! Now: AAN.SonyPictures.com/Oliver
Experience the high-spirited adventures of Oliver Twist in this Oscar®-winning musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic tale! Young Oliver (Mark Lester) is an orphan who escapes the cheerless life of the workhouse and takes to the streets of 19th-Century London. He's immediately taken in by a band of street urchins, headed by the lovable villain, Fagin (Ron Moody), his fiendish henchman, Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed), and his loyal apprentice, The Artful Dodger (Jack Wild). Through his education in the fine points of pick-pocketing, Oliver makes away with an unexpected treasure... a home and a family of his own. Set to a heartfelt score that includes such favorites as "Consider Yourself," "Where Is Love?" and "As Long As He Needs Me," OLIVER! leads us on a journey in search of love, belonging and honor among thieves. Winner of six Academy Awards® (1968), including Best Picture and Best Score, OLIVER! will steal your heart!

And to think, this entire number was done on a sound stage. It's almost unbelievable...

Fabulous! I can't stop thinking the amount of crowd control and hours of practice putting this whole choreography together. Amazing yet perfect. And what originality.

Some of the key parts in the film are children. Ron Moody had a feeling that, the story of Oliver Twist belongs to them.

In the top left corner of the scene, when coming towards the end of this song, there's an Inn swing Sign picture of Admiral Horatio Nelson.

2:15/7:09 If These butchers rolled their meat on the ground how can they still be using them and chopping them up to sell them to people.? Also how this whole thing played out reminds me how I'm writing this titanic story about 10-year-old cousins with sail on the ship and Survived the nightmare of the shipwreck with their own courage and witts and their broken friendship but with the help of all those people who drown and the sinking of the Titanic brings the two cousins relationship more closer and helps them reconcile.

Here's a History Information Fact for you to know. A Major-Problem at the Time during the Victorian Era (1837-1901) was Drunkenness! Amongst the people of the public & the Police themselves. Many of the original Peelers were dismissed within ten years for being drunk on duty. As well as arresting drunks, the Constables had to cope with all manner of public duties, including Fighting Fires, Breaking up fights, Petty Felony, as well as Serious Crime. The new police tended to be Thief Catchers, not Detectives.

Mark Lester who played Oliver was 10 years old. I think the same age as the character. Jack Wild was 16 here in the role of Dodger, a few years older than the character. Mark is 65 today, while Jack died in 2006 at the age of 53.

@@chrismaccool9097 Indeed. He has had smoking and drinking habits since his youth, becoming a full-on alcoholic at 21. It sadly ruined his acting career prematurely. It later led to his oral cancer in 2001.

Fun fact: Jack Wylde & Mark Lester wern't really acting in this song. Jack who also played Dodger in the original musical stage version was actually showing Mark Lester the ropes & Mark Lester simply learnt under his wing. The director Carl Reed kept it in feeling this made the Dodger more of a shifty and non trustworthy character.

Lmao Davey Jones of The Monkees was the original Artful Dodger in the first London theater version of ‘Oliver,’ then the boring nondescript kid who played ‘Oliver’ in the film version is the sperm donor for Michael Jackson’s oldest son Prince. You couldn’t even make this crap up…

Martin Horsey was the original Artful Dodger, both in London and in the U.S. National Tour that preceded the show's original Broadway run. Davy Jones took over the role only when it came to Broadway. Because the U.S. Original Cast Recording was made before the show opened on Broadway (so that it could be sold wherever the show toured), to the everlasting dismay of Davy Jones fans, it is Horsey who sings the role on both the London and U.S. Original Cast Recordings.
