Oliver Samuels got us through university in Canada back in the day. When the Caribbean students would get homesick, we would gather and watch “Oliver at Large” to feel better.

Many of the younger ppl who say “everything is not Jamaica” or “Jamaicans think they are all dat” is because they don’t understand that Jamaicans have always set the trend for other islands!! We got our foot in we brought other islands along. I get so sick of ppl wondering why ppl so hype abt us and we see in part why Just from this interview. These men were admired and revered in homes outside of Jamaica…think about that. For other islands some ppl saw Jamaica like foreign bec we were in places that others fear to trod! It’s in our blood. This discourse brought such nostalgic memories and I still have CDs converted from VHS of these two men showing their talent. Let’s not talk about abt Ms Lou. Same concept with the thinking of ppl in other islands..how Ms Lou oratory skills and unbridled love of her dialect and her patois! She took patois to the movie screen and the BBC unapologetically!! I am just watching this episode of The CUT and being somebody who is close to 70 years old it is interesting to me that many of our younger people, including Wayne, appear to not truly understand the influence that Miss Louise Bennett, Leone Forbes and Oliver Samuels had on our Jamaican culture at home and abroad, and how they influenced how the world sees Jamaicans. Wayne seemed so surprised to understand that Miss Lou used to do pantomimes and plays. Those of us who are my age knows that that’s what she used to do, long, long, long before the addition of VHF’s & other things came along. We had the amazing benefit of growing up with Miss Lou doing pantomimes and plays and then going on to JBC TV and doing … I think it was called ‘Ring Ding’? Those who know, please help me out, add your memories, please!! we need to educate our younger people because they don’t understand the legacy that we Jamaicans have in theatre, and in Pantomimes and in plays. Does no one have our Jamaican entertainment history (other than Reggae and Bob Marley) recorded somewhere? BTW: Trevor Rhône is worth more than a passing mention. He was extremely involved in assisting high schools to be part of the theatre narrative.
