Yeah I felt that people really missed the point of this film. I mean yes it satires Arnold films but it also satires action films and pays homage to them. I'd say that the 3rd act definitely takes it a lot slower and the movie definitely suffers for it but overall it's a good satire and a good action movie.

Don't care what people say. This movie is a genius work. It was just too ahead of its time. People just didn't get the idea of spoofing the entire genere. We need now a movie like this spoofing the superhero genera. And dont tell me Deadpool. I mean a REAL one ,like this . One where the characters go outside an superhero movie and go in our real world

Totally agree. I admit I didn't watch it in the theaters - too much other stuff out at the time, and reviewers hated it. But once I did on video, I was flabbergasted. It's friggin' brilliant, multiple writers and story changes aside - the whole idea of spoofing an entire genera was perfect. I'm glad it's getting a "second life" via sellable media, it deserves the appreciation.

In the review you said you weren't sure what they were trying spoof when it came to the cartoon cat. The spoof is the mismatch buddy cop movies in 80s America. The mismatch buddy cop movie they're spoofing is "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", a human detective partnered with a cartoon animal. Other examples of mismatch buddy cop movies, "Lethal Weapon", a young wild suicidal cop partnered with an old calm family man cop. "Turner & Hooch", a cop partnered with a dog. Another one is "Alien Nation" starring James Caan, a human partnered with an alien.

This is one of my favorite movies, and I saw it in the theater when Jurassic Park was sold out. :D Despite that, I loved it, and none of my friends would listen when I told them how much fun it was. One day I was watching it and a friend came by, scoffed at me watching it, but was then hooked by the silliness of it all. This movie also has my favorite villain of all time. Charles Dance was absolutely perfect, and that line "if God was a villain, he'd be me" is so awesome. I think it is a film for people who watch a lot of films, especially people capable of re-watching films again and again. Those are the people who appreciate the jokes you only get on the second watching and all of the cool references. People who don't watch a lot of movies weren't ready for this. Shame cos it is up there with not just one of the best Arnie movies but definitely one of the best action comedies of all time. The casting was superb, the comedy spot on, the acting awesome and above all the premise was as much of a hook for me as that in Back to the Future and Groundhog Day. .....I have to disagree with you on the bit where you mention it being "depressing" once Jack reaches the real world. When he reaches the real world and finds out that his life was artificial, it adds depth to the movie. I actually felt sorry for him, and even put myself in his shoes, thinking, how would I of felt knowing that everything I've ever known was fake. Jack Slaters reaction to this revelation is WELL expected, in some ways, similar to Jim Carrey's character in The Truman Show. I don't for the slightest believe that this took away from the movie's action. I believe it adds to the movie, and exposes the vulnerability of heroes which are often perceived as being invincible to some degree. I like movies which can be several things, funny, serious, and dynamic, and this movie gives you that, wrapped in a well presented package. Other than that point though, I thought your review was pretty much spot on.

There was such a convoluted path from conception to production that involved such a hodge-podge of writers and re-editors it is really surprising that this movie came off as amazing as it did. It was almost like idea of it was something alive, looking to emerge that just made use of the various people involved. Spoofing the entire genre from within a movie of the genre just blew too many little minds who at some level may have known they lacked sufficient depth to enjoy it. These are then the voices that "poisoned the well". That this movie is enjoyed by so many, so many years later also says something. Did it's many many many creators know what was happened, what their movie was destined to become? Or were they just running with an idea and having fun, and Last Action Hero emerged? Who can say? And I think one of the funniest lines of the movie, didn't appear in the movie. It was from the behind-the-scenes footage. Charles Dance (Benedict) eventually found out he was the 2nd choice to play the villain. The producers were looking for Alan Rickman, who just wanted too much money for the role. One day Charles appeared on-set wearing a T-shirt that said, "I"m cheaper than Alan Rickman"! That's the kind of fun that birthed this movie.

No mention or mention to the greatest actor in the film - legendary Anthony Quinn or the great character actor Tom Noonan who played the unforgettable "Ripper" in Last Action Hero !!!

Also Timothy Dalton was considered for the villain Benedict, but I like Charles dance too so I can't complain, he was also in the golden chills with Eddie Murphy , thats another underrated gem

8:14 - obvious reflection of the camera crew in the mirrors. Must have been deliberate given the fact it's the villain's soliloquy where he's talking to the camera.

This movie was like a dream to me as a kid, being a huge fan of Arnold. Imagine going home and say to your mum "I'm bringing back a friend for dinner mum!"

The cat looks like the one from the Paula Abdul music video. The car chase is sick + it uses AC/DC - Big Guns, which was only released on the films soundtrack.

Saw it in theaters when I was 12. Definitely a great flick for a kid that age. Haven’t seen in since VHS way back.

Thank you for this. I went and saw this on the big screen, I remember just falling in love, never really understanding why but I just did. Now as an adult, I still love and definitely love even more now, this film. I understand now what they were trying to do. And maybe some people will call this movie shit, that's ok but you have to really understand the time and where Arnold was at in his career. This movie to me, is his way of making fun of himself but at the same time, entertaining his followers. Trying to just laugh and enjoy cinema. Not taking things too serious but give a message as well. I think the message with the film really goes back to Danny getting robbed. He looks up to this strong fictional character but gets pushed around by some thug. As funny as the movie is and also entertaining and fun. It also has that message of being strong, smart but wise. Be the good guy, save the day. There's so much evil out there, we just have to fight it. Sorry for the rambling but this film still holds a lot to heart. And now I have to children, my oldest is my son and he fell in love with this movie, now I get to share it with him. Classic film, most underrated, hands down. @oliverharper how you ended the video, thank you so much. That was amazing.

Geez, looks like what I came here to comment is just gonna be another echo of, from what I can tell, virtually every POV in this thread: Last Action Hero solidly made, patently entertaining, slyly clever, and vexingly maligned, to that degree, in its "official" reputation. The criticism was unbelievably harsh. Maybe it's because of the way it was advertised. Look, it's certainly not deserving of Oscars or anything, but its definitely a solid film; the promotional material hyped it up to be wayyy more than that. Okay, whatever. That was a misstep, but get over it. The movie was good. The only other thing I can think of is that the satire in it caused some people's brains to short circuit. This movie seriously needs to be reappraised and redeemed. Like I said, its a good movie, with easily-made, compelling arguments to support that. In my opinion, its almost a matter of morality to challenge an injustice like this. 😠✊

They did a poor job marketing it for sure. As stated in this video it's release date didn't help.

Great review Olly. I remember seeing the trailer to this straight after the screening of Terminator 2 (the only time I remember a trailer at the end of a movie). It has its flaws but I really enjoyed it first time around and still do today. when you spoke about Charles Dance I was really surprised you didn't mention The Golden Child as he is almost a spitting image of the villain in that movie. When I watch him in this movie, I think immediately of the Golden Child.

Charles Dance was AWESOME in this movie. I cannot imagine Alan Rickman doing it better. I mean, he already played Hans Gruber and he made history in Die Hard. But Dance made history with this role. "I just shot somebody and I want to confess!" "HEY, shuddup down there!" And why can't people figure out that this is a wonderful and underrated Deadpool-like satire??

Alan Rickman was not the only actor whom turned down the role of Benedict. Timothy Dalton was also offered, but passed on it.

Underrated is absolutely right, but, also i find this film brilliantly smart and satirical genius work. There might have been "too many cooks" but everything is held together. This film parodied the blockbusters of that time and if we look now, they haven't learned the lessons of this film. ALSO, Schwarzenegger was game to make fun of himself. This film breaks the fourth wall and movie conventions letting the audience in on the joke. There is a tonal shift to the real world, and yes, Slater World is more fun but it is needed to show the vast contrast & being meta. At the time, it was too much for critics and audiences where as now, Deadpool is the closest film that mimics what Last Action Hero did. Another lesson, the studios should have listened to Arnold by holding this film 4 weeks out from Jurassic Park.
