Watching the behind the scenes footage of Game of Death always made me sad, it looked like Bruce and the cast were having so much fun making this movie, and it's a shame that it was never fully completed. Still, the archived footage that we do have kicks all sorts of ass.

This was designed to show case what Bruce Lee style (Jeet Kun Do - aka the way of an intercepting fist) is all about if this film were to be finished. God just decided to take him back from our world so early. a true candle in the wind. Love you and missed you Bruce! may you rest in peace.

Great review (as per usual), Oliver! A trip down memory lane: i had those old 4-Front VHSes, too.:) I also remember stumbling across the TV showing of 'A Warriors' Journey' one night and being shocked and amazed that they'd found and reassembled the original footage - though i thought it was on Channel 5, rather than 4? I may well be misremembering, though. The only downside of this excellent retrospective is that i was planning on covering 'Game of Death' on my blog and pretty much everything i was going to say is now redundant. Grr!:p

Fantastic, the first "Retrospective/Review" of 2018. Great work. I actually have the Robert Clouse movie on a DVD set that also included "The Big Boss" and "Way of the Dragon". I actually enjoyed the Clouse Cut, mostly for the fight scenes and easy to follow plot. I will say using the footage from Bruce Lee's actual funeral was definitely in bad taste, they could've just shot a different funeral scene to go along with the story, but instead the company had to make use of the real Bruce Lee's corpse, him acting in death, what a shame. But on the other hand, the misused stock footage of Bruce Lee at the beginning and middle of the film did make for some good laughs, especially at the beginning when the editors super-imposed that towel on Lee's neck and that Cardboard looking face, who ever did that must've been on something. I was looking at the two disc "Shout Selects" blu-ray release of this movie and noticed the Mandarin/Cantonese version on another disc. I see you used footage from that cut of the movie. It actually makes want to buy the Blu-Ray for that feature alone. Also may keep an eye out for the movie "Bruce Lee in G.O.D.", just to see what his completed version could've been.

I was confident that Barry was brought in as Lee had always been a fan of his work. The soundtrack/theme is a quality blend of Bond, Blaxploitation, and oriental elements, which imho is true homage to movie phenomenon that is Bruce Lee. Also Stan Lee has suggested using CGI, once the technology is good enough, to have Bruce posthumously play Shang Chi...

I remember seeing the theatrical cut when I was 10 and thought it was okay but this was long before I understood the story behind the film. Seeing this review it does smack of exploiting Bruce Lee as a cash in rather than any serious attempt to get his vision out there. As you say, better to watch the short movie made up of all the Bruce Lee footage and forget the terrible cash in. I would however be very interested in hearing what you think of The SIlent Flute, the film that Bruce and James Coburn write together and was originally to star Bruce but that role was taken by David Carradine in the film. I personally like the film although I know it is not well liked in general.

it may have been an exploitation from one point of view but I think overall Fans were grateful to see Bruce one more time and applauded the way the film makers tried to make the story plausible Even though we KNEW doubles were being used for some scenes truth be told they weren't bad the fight in the locker room with Carl BOB WALL Miller was as exciting IMO as the authentic scenes with Bruce.

Martijn Stuart yep when I was younger I got confused and I thought that Bruce had actually died like that instead, and I thought that it was a conspiracy when Brandon also died like that in "suspicious" circumstances. Both young Chinese Americans with unlimited potential. Both healthy as can be and on t physical and mental shape. Then both die suddenly from nowhere in suspicious circumstances. Feels like an assassination/conspiracy to me. I bet Bruce pissed off the wrong people, like triads in HK, which were well known to be involved in the movie industry. I remember Bruce got provoked and then challenged even beat up one of them since he was an extra on the set of enter the dragon. Bruce then grabbed him by the hair and rammed his head into the wall.

One aspect I really liked about Bruce Lee's concept was that his character was a former champion, considered the best and a retired from the sport of martial tournaments. So the syndicate wanted him more than anyone else for the mission. James Tien's character (The last guy before Bruce to fight Kareem) was supposed to be the then current world champion who hated being under the shadow or Bruce's character, so the animosity developed in the idea of the characters was very smart. James wanted to prove he was better, but in the end, paid with his life due to ego.

I have been a fan of Bruce Lee's since my father first showed me Enter The Dragon. At the time, I was already studying martial arts and it was a real treat. I was thinking recently about how Game Of Death might have turned out if Bruce Lee had lived. I am sure that it would have been incredible, both in terms of action and how Lee wanted to work in his personal beliefs. One of the books I have about Bruce Lee, even outlines how he was planning to work in his personal philosophy, including what is seen in the original footage. I know that he wanted Chuck Norris to appear in the film as well as Whang Ing-Sik ( who played the Japanese fighter in Way Of The Dragon) and his student Taky Kimura. With all of these talented martial artists in the film, I am sure we would have had some great fight scenes.

Even with all the silliness and the fact they exploited Lee's death , I still love this film and have since I was a teenager, I wore out the vhs something fierce . I don't know about the score being mediocre , it's one of my favorites from any of his films and it's one of my favorite Barry creations, it's powerful and invigorating. I also love , totally obsessed with the sequence in and outside of the factory , it's total perfection the way it's staged , edited , and choreographed , just perfect. And yeah , Game of Death part 2 is a terrific companion piece, it's easily one of the best martial arts films from that era , totally stunning fight choreography, and some great set design and cinematography. I'm usually not up for remakes, but this could a good one. You could have loads of different legends in the pagoda. Great retrospective as usual mate.

I've always hoped that they would remake not only Game of Death but also The Silent Flute (made as Circle of Iron) and do them as Bruce had envisioned them.

if they were to remake it, i hope they stick to the concept that Lee was trying to present especially with the guardians of each level and how his style adapted to each one of them

Has there ever been an in depth interview with James Tien, especially in regards to Bruce, his career in Hong Kong and his vision for this movie in particular?? James Tien starred with Bruce in The Big Boss, Fist of Fury and was meant to have a fairly sizeable role in this movie as well. He had a good career on his own before and after starring with Lee. It would be interesting to hear his point of view on all of this. Bruce was and always will be the greatest in my opinion. This may have been the greatest film ever had he lived to complete it and we can only dream about where his career would have gone afterwards.

Anyone else ever noticed the impact THE GAME OF DEATH had on the videogame industries?? In this movie Bruce Lee fights in Pagoda,in which in every floor....or "level",there is a different set of thugs and a different end area/ end level boss for Lee to deal with....just videogames. I think this movie had a big impact on game designing because of how the movie is layed out.

Even anime movies like the Ranma 1/2 movie "Big Trouble In Nekonron, China"'s final act was almost DIRECTLY based on the idea of Game Of Death. Right down to a sometimes comedic, sometimes badass take on the idea of moving up floors to fight enemies. And lets not forget in Dragonball Z, during the early part of the Majin Buu arc, when Babidi has Gohan, Goku, the Surpreme Kai and Vegeta fight their way through several levels of bad guys. It's become a legit trope over the years, thanks to Lee's influence.

No sólo a videojuegos, sino a libros, series, películas, etc. Donde el "protagonista" debe atravesar diferentes "niveles" para luego enfrentarse al "jefe final" fórmula exitosamente usada por muchos hasta el hartazgo (sí o no Saint Seiya, Tony Jaa, Leal, etc. XDXDXD) Saludos

I've always LOVED this film, including the 1978 version, there's something awesome about the naffness of it all combined with the prestige of it being Bruce Lee's 'final film'. Also- Oliver; are you ever going to talk about Mike Habjan's Superman Vs Hulk series? I'd love to hear your opinion on that...

Yes the footgae of the end which is all that got shot before he passed away is legit worth the buy of this "movie" and I use that term loosely just for the final 20 minutes or so...... but this film is exploitation otherwise....

I'm probably in the minority here but I would actually like to see them take this on as a project with modern CGI, whatever they do it cannot be more demeaning to the memory of Bruce Lee than what they did back in '78. It would be nice to see it done properly and to Lee's original vision. They could also edit out any footage of Bruces' funeral as that's just fucking awful they even did that. However I think I would also be happy if they remade it with new actors, a modern take but again how it should of been and then just dedicated to Bruce Lee. Anything would be better than that laughable photoshop cut n paste face effect. WTF.

This would be a pretty cool idea in my opinion, either that or in some sort of rotoscoping style so they can use Bruce's amazing footage.

nice. i think the day, with an cgi-bruce, will come in near future. i hope that will happened soon. some years ago, they animated princess leia(like she looks in 1977) in the end scene of "star wars story: rogue one" for some seconds. thats not bad and not far away from the perfection, but for an cgi-bruce, you need a litte bit more bits&bytes. a bruce lee animation must look perfect! a movie like this is an great idea, to honor mr lee and bring him back to people minds !! greetz from germania

I liked this one just because I got to see Bob Wall actually show what he could do. The first Lee movie I ever saw was Enter the Dragon and his purpose is to get utterly outclassed by Bruce, so watching him demonstrate his ability was a treat.

The 1978 movie was sooo bad! The only forgiving grace was the last 13 minutes of the film when the real Bruce Lee came up the stairs!! The whole theater erupted with some shouts of "about time"!! THEN, it seemed like the real movie began. If only for those 13 minutes!

I'm a Bruce Lee fan and I hated this movie with a passion, they destroyed what made Lee's movies so fun to watch. The directors of the movie knew they couldn't complete the movie without him because of his death, so you don't make a new movie with a fake Bruce Lee and try to pass it off as the real thing. It's that simple.

An awful cash-In bad taste movie especially because they used actual footage from Bruce Lee's funeral. The only good thing about it is the original footage Bruce shot in 1972, it's really impressive and cool. I bought it on dvd years ago and i remember i threw the dvd in the bin after it finished.
