I think with midroll ad's it all depends on placement, it can fit quite well and almost work as a transition, but sometimes it's really jarring, depending on the content, but It's not a big enough deal to worry about!

@@Thalymor yes! Especially for newer youtubers, who start a channel and put up a bunch of 15 minute videos with 6 ads or ads that roll into 5+ minute ads and the length of the ads almost equals the video. Like I'm sorry but why do you think I want to watch 10+ minutes of totally unrelated ads to be able to watch a 15 minute video of you getting ready for the day?

I'm wary of midroll adverts becoming a mirror of cable television because it ends up taking 5 hours to watch a 2-hr movie and you can't actually enjoy the content. Also, YT isn't really free. You have to give Google a lot of your personal information and they track the hell out of you plus you have to pay for internet. Also, some people frankly put a ton more work into their content and for that I would sit through an add (or a brand deal esp.) but you know that many others aren't and yet as Ollie is saying, there are 4, 6, 8, 10 adds all on it. It's a slippery slope for sure.

youtube is a goldmine for google! They see everything you are interested in, products you like, solutions you are looking for, places you want to go etc etc and then get to sell that info to companies to market back at you. Which is why I'm dumbfounded youtube ads are like the worst ads of any social platform lol I feel like they're like the ads that play on very late night TV, along with things to protect old people from falling :p except for the charity ones of course.

Ads are fine, in America we don't pay for TV unless you have cable, the only thing is where the ads are placed on youtube they interrupt the flow. For example watching someone singing and in the middle of the song there's an ad. FYI: cable started in the US as ad free, because you were paying for the service.

Okay, so here's my thoughts on KZbin ads. I don't mind them at the beginning, but when they're in the middle of the video they're super annoying because they always seem to happen mid-sentance or at the most inconvenient time. At least with TV ads they're placed at a point where it's the end if a scene or something, idk if this makes sense. 😂

I dont mind mid roll ads if theres only 1, but some have loads. This one has 4! 😭 but sometimes they come in at the most annoying moments, like mid sentence like in this video at the end Oli says "don't, um don't" **ad pops up** "don't juggle with fire" Also, if you skip the ad when it becomes available, do you still get paid?
@accountforwastingtime
@accountforwastingtime 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's staggered, so they get paid more based on how long you watch the ad? But that kills me because I'm like okay, 15 second ad, that is fine! And then a 5:30 minute one will show up...and even if I go do something else and let it play ANOTHER one shows up. On some channels it's like the ads could just keep going forever.

With the mid roll ads, only dislike them when they impact the content - today cut Ollie off right after 'dont' in the out-tro! I'd be more in favour of several ads at the beginning and end so the quality of the video isn't affected but I'm not sure how the ad options for creators work. I do totally agree the ads are necessary though

Mid roll adverts mainly bother me because the placement of them tends to be in the middle of the sentence or after them a transition happens in the video. The ones that REALLY gripe me is when an outro is happening and then I get 2 ads, it comes back to the video and the person says "bye!" and then the video ends. With yours and carrie's I've easily been getting 6 ads a video. But I also get that they are necessary to generate revenue.

I'm really intrigued as to whether more people watched the full ads as part of this video. i'll be honest, i usually skip ads just out of instinct, not really thinking about the impact on the creator - i did watch the ads on this in full after the points you both made! i think there is a line with the length of ads though. 30 seconds isnt too intrusive, but i do see some which are 2/3/4 mins long each - sometimes that can be as long as the video on some channels.

I'm fine with mid roll adverts, but they usually cut u off mid sentence. are u able to put them at the end of a sentence? I always let at least one ad run for each video I watch as I realise that is how u make your money. Especially during times like now. Also my favourite memory of Ol's vlogs is when he was in panto & they were doing secret Santa, and he realised one of the cast had been missed out so ran out to get a present for they wouldn't feel left out. Gonna be honest, I don't really like mid roll ads, but who is gonna like them? I don't think anyone would say they like them, more tolerate them. However, I do think they're necessary for that creator to get paid more and I'm not gonna get super angry. It's a little bit annoying but the 10 seconds, or the 30 seconds, or the 5 seconds before you can skip is not that much of a sacrifice for a creator to get paid more. I would never get mad at the creator or ask them to turn it off. Literally just had a 13 second mid roll ad as I was typing this and it was fine. At least Oli will get a little bit more this month :)

If there's another way to support you monetarily with mid-roll ads, that would be preferred. It's slightly annoying when the ads play during a video. It takes away the focus, and if I'm multitasking, I often have to go back to it to skip. I don't like that it cuts off mid-speech or mid-point. If it were better placed, that might make mid-rolls better.

I have mixed feelings about youtube ads. In general I think the ads themselves are terrible because they are never, ever remotely relevant to me. I'm a woman and they will be about men's skin products- I have been getting one lately that is some weird thing that is specifically supposed to strengthen a man's jaw or something?? Or they will be for a school on the other side of the country. I'm not someone who is influenced by ads anyway, but it's just funny that so much time is spent on youtube watching content so specific to your tastes and none of the ads and usually even a lot of the sponsorships are ever anything I would or could spend money on. Recently though I have noticed a lot of people(usually newer youtubers) will do their 20 minute videos about their makeup or cleaning routine or whatever, and in those twenty minutes there will be 3-5 ad breaks, and if you watch through the 5 second, 15 second, or 30 second ads they will roll over to 5 minute ones. Then even sometimes those will roll over to even longer ones! Then I have to feel bad because it's like well, I want to support your channel but I don't even watch TV shows with 15 minutes worth of ads for a 20-25 minute show it just seems a little weird that that's almost expected now for youtube. I notice it mostly in newer youtubers' videos, and you can definitely tell too when someone is trying to get rich quick doing ads and sponsorships vs wanting to genuinely create content. Then there are youtubers I watch who have been doing this 10 years and don't monetize. I wish youtube had an easier way for us to just pay youtubers straight out, like if we wanted to sponsor their channel. There's Patreon, but that youtuber has to set that up and link to it each time and tell people about it, which people usually seem to be uncomfortable doing because it feels like asking for money. But if youtube had a "support this channel" button, maybe where you could donate X small amount per video, month, whatever, in lieu of ads it'd be a very user-friendly way to generate revenue.

Its especially snnoyibf in the middle of a piece of moving music. Initially it feels like the business side us then ivertaking the content, but as you say, if it's free then why not let them
