Have a friend who works with terminally ill children, she becomes a part of the family and stays close to the parents after their child passes. I am so awed by her compassion and ability to make such close friends with all her patients. I truly don't know how she has been able to continue for over 30 years working with such sick and dying children.

To everyone who gets mad that a doctor asks you the same questions over and over, remember that some people are pressured to lie to doctors because of abuse, depression, etc.,or maybe because their mom is judging them in the corner of the room. Doctors don’t have to immediately trust you, they’re supposed to help you, and they can only do that when they have all the info

I had one of my wisdom teeth out last year which resulted in a submandibular abscess - a very rare but very serious infection. Basically the floor of my mouth and next was swelling with fluid. I was in so much pain, and by the time I was hospitalised I could barely swallow. I was severely dehydrated, vomiting and had eaten hardly anything. The emergency dentist took one look at me and said "Yeah you need to go to A&E". The surgeon said they were basically managing sepsis at this point. It hurt to talk, I could hardly open my mouth. I've always been terrified of going under, but why the point I didn't care what they had to do. Thankfully because I'd only had 6 raspberries to eat the night before, they could operate as soon as possible. Unless someone was rushed in, I was at the top of the list. I spent 4 days in hospital being dehydrated and on antibiotics. So grateful to the NHS saving my life.

I'm training as a radiographer, and honestly, being on placement in the hospital is the best, most rewarding thing. Being able to help people who are suffering is amazing. Plus you see so many cool things! We had one guy who had a bone infection in his hand, so they sewed a pouch into his abdomen, kept his hand (still attached to his arm) in the pouch for a couple of weeks while he had some intense antibiotics, then used his fibula (one of the bones in your calf) to replace his metacarpals (the bones in your hand). So amazing what medicine can achieve, and so amazing to be a part of it.

I passed out the first time I had a blood test and the nurse says it’s one of those things that some people always get really faint when they have one. She said it was nothing to be embarrassed about because it’s just one of those things and it can be like that for anyone. She suggested that if I have to get it done again I should eat something before and bring a snack with me for after, ask for a double appointment so I can take my time after if I need, and ask to get it done lying down. The next time I did all of those things and it was so much better - I barely even felt faint. So that’s my advice if you ever have to go again!

My dad and my sister have similar reactions to needles and injections, for my dad it can even be the discussion of a procedure or seeing blood. It’s not actually a fear but a vasovagal reflex that some of us have! Some people do develop a fear related to it knowing they could feel so off/pass out afterwards. It’s also called reflex syncope, my dad requests a smelling salt capsule beforehand now just in case it happens at a doctors visit and my sister will request to lie down before injections or blood draws.

I have been in hospital so many times. I'm the worst for getting ill or injuring myself. I've been multiple times for sprained wrists and ankles that were so painful, we thought they were broken. I've never broken a bone but I've had a strapped ankle, a strapped wrist and been in a sling for really bad sprains. When I was quite young too, I had gastrontoritis and was in hospital for a while because I couldn't stop throwing up and I was shaking. I've also been in four times for my appendix and ended up getting it taken out. As well as that, my most embarrassing hospital experience was when I got a menstrual cup stuck inside me and had to get it taken out. Oh my god, worst experience of my life. My mum was also asked to leave the room so they could find out if I was sexually active or pregnant 🤰 🙄 I was also taken to hospital in a different city, four hours away from my home, in an ambulance because we were at a gig and I collapsed. It turned out my drink had been spiked which really sucked. The most recent time I went to hospital was about four weeks before lockdown and I had really bad pain when I was breathing and felt like I couldn't breathe properly and so the doctors were concerned that I maybe had a blood clot and insisted I went to hospital. I'm fine, I don't have a blood clot or coronavirus. I've been for loads of blood tests because I have issues with my iron levels and am always really anaemic so the doctors are always trying to get it up and so I have loads of blood tests to check my levels. I'm really chill with needles though, I actually look when they're doing it and couldn't care less 💉 I've never been to hospital for this but when I get too hot, I tend to either a) faint or b) throw up or c) go really dizzy or d) all of the above. I've never been to the hospital for it as it passes pretty quickly but I probably should go to the doctor 🤔 Literally, my hospital record must be so long because I've been that many times.

The amount of hospital trips I have done is too long to list but my top three that spring to mind is when I was around 3-4 I had rotavirus I was taken to hospital then transferred to a different one, I broke my arm in 2015 had to get surgery then recently I had surgery on my ovaries I used to hate needles but I’m fine with them now and I don’t mind blood, my sister works in a nursing home with elderly and she also gets attached to the elderly living there

So knock on wood but I've never broken a bone. I have had to go in to a&e as I've cut my head open twice. However I've been in hospital with my grandparents when they were ill so I found hospitals tough. The worst was my brother who broke his wrist after falling off the top of playground equipment, he was 14 haha and had to have a operation as well as being put on a spinal board and blue lighted to hospital. We spent 9 hours in the hospital before going home then coming back for the operation the next morning. Turned up to work on Sunday and was a zombie 😂 my cousin is going into medicine and I have so so much respect for him.

At the end of 2018, my sight in one eye began to go, the next evening I went to the eye hospital and apparently my retina had detached and I needed urgent surgery. I had one operation the next morning and it didn’t work so I had another a week later. Then I had one in spring last year to remove the cataracts that the operation caused. I had to go up to Cambridge to get a dna test because they found out I have a genetic disorder that causes loss of sight hearing and mobility. Luckily mine is pretty mild but was still a scary experience. My sight is still quite bad in that eye cause the healing is slow and I need an operation on my ‘good eye’ to prevent it happening again. Everyone was so nice and I honestly don’t know what my dad would’ve done without the nhs.

I was born with a heart problem and as an adult developed asthma so I am more than used to hospitals...it's kind of weird to me when people say they have never been in one or just have maybe one story lol Asthma is scary because it can be hard to know when to go vs hoping the rescue inhalers will kick in. Fortunately, heart problem is pretty under control as an adult but I had had two open heart surgeries by the time I was 5 :( first one I was a day old! I'm a pro now at having blood drawn. As for shots, I did allergy shots for almost 3 years so I'm a pro at that too lol you wanna learn to deal with needles, try getting 3 shots 3 times a week every week! I have worked multiple administration type roles in hospitals and never thought I could be on the provider side until my mom had cancer- twice. Second time she developed the worst kind of hospital-acquired infection you could get, went septic, nearly died and was so sick the rest of that year and I helped to take care of her at home. Between that and working in the actual hospital and being around patients more, I finally gained more confidence and was like you know...I can do this. So at age 30, I am going back to school for nursing! In a pre-nursing program now for the pre-reqs. I always thought I'd be either too emotional or way too anxious to be a nurse, but over years I have had to be the "strong one" in many of those terrible patient situations with family members, and now I realize how important it is to have nurses who do care and advocate for patients, aside from just being able to do the job. There's also not as much death all the time as you might think (in normal times at least :/) in the hospital, and even in like cancer clinics I have heard people who work in those say more often than not, you are treating people and able to give good prognosis and you work a lot more with hope than sadness. Carrie, I could see you being a caregiver...even if it would be too emotional, you have the kind of heart needed for being there with patients, especially when they might be alone, feel helpless, need someone to advocate for them. In another life I can see you doing that!

For blood tests I always turn ghost white even though I don’t feel feint they always think I’ll collapse. I have them done so often especially when I was 17. I went to a&e and they took blood except it took them 2 doctors and a nurse to get it done right they tried both my arms, one twice and the back of my hands too then the nurse came in and got it on the other arm the second time, I ended up covered in blood by the end of it. So blood tests and injections have been fine for me, the only time I’ve ever felt dizzy with a needle was when I got my cartilage piercing but the piercer was very nice and had me lay down for a bit before he let me leave.

I had knee surgery when I was 15 and when I was in recovery my mum and dad got to come say hi. At some point my body started shivering and I remember my mum asking if I was cold and then everything went black and my mum said that my eyes rolled to the back of my head and I just started shaking and the nurses looked at each other and one of them put something into my IV and I stopped shaking and just started crying because I was scared. Then a few years ago I had to have my gallbladder removed and I talked to the anesthesiologist and mentioned what happened back then and it's apparently called "shivering" and is very common when you've been under general anesthesia. I'm currently waiting for a letter from the hopsital to get surgery done.

I've broken my wrists 5 times, alternating each time. I don't remember one, but I remember the other four. First time, I was 4 in nursery. It was "sports day", and I won the running race, running up to the shed where the toys were stood. I put my hands out to stop myself. As I stopped, the boy behind me spotted his mom, wasn't looking, and ran into me, just as my hands hit the shed. My wrist cracked. I fell over in a pair of kitten heels, really tiny heels, when I was about 6. Put my hands out to stop myself. I was at a friend's house on her swing. Jumped off, misjudged, and landed funny. Broke again. The last time, I was at my nan's riding on a scooter along her street. I was 10. There was a pot hole in the pavement, and the wheel went in first. I went over the handle bars. Had to have surgery for that one to reset it. I remember not crying once. Yet the girl in the bed next to me was 14 and had broke her toe, and was screaming. I remember thinking she was pathetic, even at 10. 🤣 I was a clumsy child. 😂

I've fainted a lot from blood, every since I was young. Like you were describing about reading that story, I've fainted twice from reading a book in class. It's really embarrassing to faint in front of people, I've actually fainted on public transport too which was not fun. The worst time though was in tenth grade when I fainted and hit my head on the floor and ended up getting a concussion. And the weirdest thing is I'm not super grossed out about blood and stuff, it's more the fear of fainting that makes me nervous and then when I'm nervous sometimes I'll faint. It's a vicious cycle I guess.

My mum is a fainter when it comes to needles, I am absolutely not. She drove when I went to get the implant put in my arm. I watched the whole thing intently, it involved a needle for local anaesthetic and then some kind of plastic contraption for putting the implant in. I was weirdly fascinated about it and watched the whole thing. The nurse already knew my mum and found it hilarious how differently we react to needles. My mum was in the room and accidentally looked over towards the end and while I was getting off the bed to go, she started feeling dizzy. Cut to five minutes later, I'm sat in the chair in the corner of the office with a huge dressing on my arm while my mum is lying on the bed with a cold flannel on her forehead, a cup of lucozade and the nurse and gp fussing over her! Unbelievable 😂

I had to have 2 operations when I was about 5 or 6 on my ears and nose, (I don't remember why), and I remember when they were going to put me to sleep, I was very anxious. And a doctor came into this little yellow room I was in, and had a bottle of yellow stuff, and he said "okay we're going to put some magic banana yazoo in your hand now and it's going to make you fall asleep." Its so random but I thought that was so nice! 😂♥️

You had a vasovagal reaction to the shot. Pretty much your heart rate and blood pressure drops rapidly with little to know warning thus cause you to faint or feel dizzy. I've had a syncope issue in my late teens early twenties where I would have almost no warning before I was pale as a ghost and then on the floor. At university my first semester my father had to walk with me to and from classes because they were so frequent. I got very good at falling.

I've never had a broken bone or anything. However I have fainted MANY times over the years. I've suffered from nose bleeds my whole life (actually haven't had one in about 5 years I don't think) anyway the first time I fainted was when I was having a nose bleed, I have no memory of this but my dad has told me about it. One time we were in Focus (DIY store) and I fainted, I don't think I'd had anything to eat and it was like mid-afternoon. Another time I'd had a sleepover with my friends and we were supposed to go into town the next day, walked to the bus stop around the corner and I could feel myself going, I don't know if I actually fainted that day, I can't remember. I fainted a couple of times at school. When I was dog grooming a few years ago I got bit on my finger and fainted. The last time I fainted was maybe a year ago I was on the train going to work and it was the busiest train I've been on, I was stood up right by the doors and it was so hot and stuffy and I could feel it coming on and I was low key panicking in my head, trying to focus on my breathing, next thing I hear someone ask if I'm okay and I was on the floor of the train. I don't really know what triggers it in me but I can definitely feel it coming on when it happens. Sorry for the life story. 😂

I'm a nurse on an ITU which is a very interesting job sometimes! (especially now lol) We have had people in, covered in tattoos, known to have taken or still take IV drugs, and have a huge fear of needles! Confused patients are always fun to deal with, some get a bit aggressive which isn't so fun, but a lot just get really paranoid. We get accused of trying to kill people quite often. I explained to one man once who was questioning where he was and explained he had just had surgery and the other patients around him had also had surgery (this was a cardiac ITU so most were post heart surgery) and he asked me what he had done with everyone's organs! I explained they still had all their organs and in the end we had to phone is wife at about 6am so she could talk to him (he asked her and his son their date of birth so he knew it was them). Another man I looked after was also paranoid and I was stood next to him to stop him pulling stuff out he shouldn't be pulling out and he said to me; i know what you're doing, you're making babies with illegal substances! This is still my favourite comment from a confused patient. except maybe one man who kept asking where the little girl that was looking after him had gone. I look very young for my age lol.

I always get weird over medical needles. I've had a lot if blood taken over the years, I just look away. However I've got so many piercings and tattoos I can watch them being done absolutely fine so for me it's definitely the blood being taken. However, I'm okay dealing with blood otherwise. Just it being taken from me makes me feel odd.

I have a variety of long term health issues so I have to get blood taken a lot, and I totally relate to Ollie! Even if I don't see the blood, I get super woozy after getting my blood taken for some reason. I don't register a physical fear response at all but it's almost like my subconscious just shuts me down? And I'm not even afraid of blood, I can handle nosebleeds and bleeding wounds totally fine. Anyway, over the years it's improved a bit, but to this day it still makes me feel shitty when I get my blood taken. Vaccinations and injections though? Totally fine 🤷🏻♀️

I work as a GP assistant. It's great, but you shouldn't be sensitive when it comes to blood, haha. We get a lot of (big) wounds and stuff like that, burns, broken bones etc. and funnily enough, i'm scared (used to be actually) of needles. But ever since I started working as a GP assistant, which includes doing the injections myself, it's different :p. Kind of hard to explain, but it't true.

I got called into hospital at 10pm (and again at 1am) when I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease, it was the scariest time, a few months later I fainted home alone and my parents couldn't wake me up and spent the day in hospital (because of the same auto-immune thing) but the doctors were convinced I was hungover or on drugs and it took both my parents, the paramedics who's come to my house with the ambulance and another nurse to convince him I wasn't on any form of drugs or alcohol - the thing that gets to me is he didn't even go through the questions, just went "so how much did she drink last night", he just saw me as a teenage girl and made assumptions

oh and when I was 1 a doctor told my parents I was fine, 12 hrs later I was in the ICU and was told if my parents hadn't taken me to the second doctor who sent me there I would have died that night, and a few years after that had a condition that no one in the hospital knew about except this ONE doctor who had recently studied abroad and had studied the exact condition I had and was able to diagnose me when everyone else was stuck

Also i had a seizure when I was 8 I was in hospital for 4 nights and I had a lumbar puncture to find out the cause but I guess it's was just a high temperature.

I broke my right arm when I was 5 falling off my dad's back in the back garden. He initially found it funny until he heard me crying. Mum took me to hospital. Doctor asks me (as a 5 year old) how did you break your arm? I say "my daddy broke it" so the doctor looks at my mum who then explains it properly... 5 years later I break my left arm on a school trip in Holland, 1 day before we were due to come home... i wasn't taken to hospital and the teachers took us bowling... which I also started to take part in until the teachers realised they had to help me... I get home the next day, teachers tell my mum that I hurt my arm and i had been "milking it a bit" came home and not long after that went to hospital and my parents get questioned as it was a 24 hour injury... teachers were shocked when back after half term... not even a year later I break the same arm again outside secondary school, tripped over my own feet and have had plates and screws in the bones ever since. I never want to have that kind of break or any other break for that matter ever again

I’m squeamish but I only faint when I actually lose blood. If I get a bad cut or a jag or whatever, I just pass out. Once had to have a biopsy and passed out, and my blood pressure went down to 80/34 😂😂😂

The jab story 😳 I've got no issues but I've got my whooping cough jab on Thursday and because being in a hospital is not the one currently I'm dreading not feeling well afterwards and having to stay longer

I broke my leg in 2 places when I was 12 and had to have it manipulated whilst under anaesthetic. I ended up with my whole leg in a cast for 8 weeks and had a wheelchair.

Same! I honestly felt seen when I read that part of Twilight as a kid, because I'd never heard anyone mention it before, haha. It really is like rust and salt, and that is somehow so much worse.

Here's a story my husband loves and hates in equal measure. I've always had some kind of ovary issue (we now know to be endometriosis) but one night we were having sex and I ended up in the most pain of my entire life. An ambulance was called and I was rushed to hospital. They found nothing. 9 months later, 8 A&E visits, a referral to gynaecology and finally laparoscopy, it was confirmed yes I did have endo but the extreme pain was from a pelvic adhesion. My ovary was stuck to my pelvic wall and it's usually caused by someone with endo doing extreme sport... Well let me tell you I've never done any extreme sport 😂 my husband felt completely awful that I'd had to give up work, and be in a wheelchair for 9 months from pain but there was a part of lad brain that kicked in... He did that 😂 it was sorted nearly 2 years ago and we can absolutely laugh now but god that was a time

So I go to uni at a medical school, so I have a lot of friends that are medical students. In September last year I had a seizure and had to be taken to hospital and as I was coming around in A&E I saw someone I knew, and not just anyone but the guy I had a crush on. I kept seeing him around whilst he was working and I was waiting, but then to make matters worse I went to have a CT scan and as I was in the machine I had another seizure. Of course they brought in a doctor, and lo and behold who is paired with the doctor they brought in? The guy I have a crush on. (of course he removed himself once he realised he knew me but still. of course! of course that's who got brought in *facepalm*)

I don't think you'd do very well on my uni course... I do forensics and the amount of grim pictures they put on our lecture slides at 9am is ridiculous!

When I was younger - maybe 7 or 8, I had the flu and then developed a rash, so my mum took me to the doctor and for some reason they weren't doing blood tests, so they sent me to a&e. My mum had told me that when she had blood tests she looked away when the needle went in and then looked, so I did the same. But they put the needle into my arm, and then removed it and tried to catch the blood with a tube, so I looked at my arm and saw my arm coated in my blood and it was awful!! They told my mum that they didn't want to collapse my veins (?!) but for the next few days in hospital they did the tests normally 😂 I had itp if anyone's interested :)
