I meant to say - please get in touch (here or via email) with any additional ideas and suggestions for future courses/retreats/workshops. Also, don't worry too much about weather-related issues. Painting in the UK it is quite possible to have a wonderful week of clear weather that's not too cold in February, and a week's worth of miserable rain in June! My friends at The Mill in VA confirmed that the winters there are often relatively mild, and working outdoors in the winter landscape is not a problem. In any event, my way of working on location is generally to be quick, collecting ideas, finding inspiration and making quick sketches that we can work with in the comfort of the studio - the best of both worlds!

Since i’m 77 years old, my husband travels with me. It would be awesome if we could get accommodations where he could stay in the same room with me, and pay just for the room, but not the whole course. Or your new option of completely finding our own rooms would be great also. We live in Arizona, so USA classes would be great, but i still want to also do the European retreats!

I can't believe you'll be teaching 20 minutes from my house. I've signed up for one of the 3 day courses. The Mill is a great location, the staff is friendly and the food is very good not to mention the beer and local wine. Looking forward to January!

This sounds wonderful. It's risky in January in the US. Weather can change in a blink. I wouldn't chance flying out of Chicago during that time. Enjoy. The venue looks so wonderful.

The best starting place is to think about/look at pictures of/visit the places and landscapes that inspire you. Take a small sketch pad and a pencil and observe and make some sketches. You then have subjects to paint and can start to look at the painting techniques you need to develop - most of those are on my YT channel and I’ve started a landscape painting course on my Patreon page too.

Yes - this is fundamental watercolour technique, so I always like to work on issues like this, within the context of the wider programs, no matter the length of the workshop.

I'm excited about you coming to Virginia, but at least for me and probably others, 2 months is not very long to get that kind of money together, even for the 3 day. If this year goes well, will you look to making this a yearly retreat? I've been to retreats from other artists and the retreat style is just really nice. It becomes a kind of community learning situation where we all bounce ideas off each other and see kits and tools that someone else uses and just generally really fun and a great experience.

It is called “the quick buck” system. All other artists give at least one year’s notice. This is the way of the world now.

My income is derived primarily from selling original artwork and prints through UK galleries for the past 11 years, and I'd be delighted to keep it this way. However, these courses are a direct response to many requests over the last few years for me to offer workshops in the US. It has taken months of planning and the opportunity exists at this time of the year as a result of accommodation availability at excellent pricing which we wanted to offer; many that have booked already have no issues with the timing. Please inform yourself before jumping on to my YT channel and leaving negative, inaccurate comments.

Sketching is the perfect way to overcome this - it makes the paper less intimidating.

Hi Oliver. I’m interested in your course at The Mill in Virginia. I’ve never been to a painting retreat before. I’m quite the beginner. Will this be too advanced for me?

I've made sure that the content will work for beginners and more experienced painters too. I'm used to conducting workshops of 10-20 people that hve a wide range of skills and experience, and I feel comfortable tailoring the content so that it works for all participants - that comes from spending one-on-one time with all.

January can be quite cold in Virginia in January. Will this be from photos?

Good question Linda. We have a great studio to work from, so will be based on whatever the weather allows, which is always the case. It's easy to have a week of rain in May, so we adapt to whatever it throws at us. My location work is generally quick and often, building up ideas and inspiration through quick sketching.
