Excellent tutorial! The adjustments made all the difference in the print quality. From my point of view, this typewriter has a very desirable typeface, and is especially useful for typing in all the languages that I know. This would be a keeper for sure :) Happy typing! Daniel

Olivetti are very stable, comfortable and quiet machines. There's no better feeling than taking something that have been prepared for scrapping and revive it.

Nice! Gotta say that's one of the more straightforward Ring & Cylinder adjustments - some machine don't have quite as refined a system as that. (:

So the carriage screws have to be loosened because the surface they're binding against is what looks like is being moved with the adjustment. If they're tight, you won't be able to make the adjustment. Got it. If it is just that one letter, I might be more inclined to file the stop down just a titch on that single letter, but I'd want to check spacing and alignment as well before I start. R&C impacts every character, so I'd personally be hesitant to go there. Naturally, I'm assuming you checked with several different letters on both sides of the basket to make sure that was the right call. Another test I've seen documented is to hold the base of the type bar against the stop ring and slide the carriage. If you get a dark black streak from the ribbon, it's too close. If the paper doesn't grab at all, it may be too far away. Never had one that I've actually had to adjust, although its part of my standard checks. On the ribbon adjust, a slash (/) should extend the full height of the line. That and the underscore (_) are noted in manuals as the best characters to use for testing bleed or insufficient or excess throw. Then after, as you say, type a bit and see what happens, particularly with the descenders on q, p, y, and j. Great video!

I have a return lever on a Studio 44 that I’m not using. I’d be happy to send it to you if you give me instructions on how best to remove it. The machine is intact but unfortunately too gummed up for my abilities and missing a case.

I actually got a parts machine but I decided not to tear it apart because after cleaning it up it works fine, though a different type face. I think the shaft that the lever attaches to is the part I need and I’ve never removed one before, it looks complicated. Thank you for your offer, but I’m okay with using it as is.

Thanks for the video, Joe! That typewriter has a very nice font and imprint. Reminds me of the Congress Elite I have on a couple of my Olympias, but I think this looks nicer. One question: That type of wrench you are using has a specific name? I don't know how to search for them. Regards from Barcelona!
@Joe_VanCleave6 күн бұрын
The wrenches are branded Moody, a division of Central Tools, stock number 58-0161 for the metric wrenches, stock number 58-0151 for the imperial wrenches.

Would it have been better to replace the platen?

So, mine is hard to type on compared to my royals and SC's, is that just the Olivetti way or is mine having an issue? I mean it hurts my fingers to type on it. It's hard the last inch of the key.

Most people would describe them as “mushy”. Have you adjusted the touch selector, under the ribbon cover on the left side? If not that, then it may need servicing.
