Part of Magic’s magic if you like is that French augmented 6th chord. It sounds flat but it isn’t so it adds pathos and that otherworldly effect you were alluding you . Add the wailing guitar and the Pom Pom groove top that off with Olivia’s fantastically sonic vocal and you have a masterpiece of a pop song that has lost none of its sizzle in 40 years!

@IBGECKO4 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that you've never heard this song. It spent four weeks at #1 in the summer of 1980 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is one of her most recognizable hits. In 1978, after the mega success of Grease, her music took a distinctive shift from adult contemporary to straight up pop, starting with her Totally Hot album (check out A Little More Love and Deeper Than The Night), all the way through 1988's The Rumor album. After that ten year pop arc, she started making more niche music, projects that were meaningful to her, but not necessarily super commercial, like Warm & Tender (a lullaby album), and Gaia. She's an incredibly versatile artist, and yes, she is stunningly gorgeous, even today at 71 years old. And now she is a Dame!

Xanadu was the very first movie I went to the movie theater to watch. Wow, did I just date myself there something fierce. Anywho, it's a total cheese fest but SOOOOOO worth the watch. The music was and is incredible, Don Bluth's animation is still my fave from that era, and there's Gene Kelly to boot. What more do you need? Tight ropes, roller skates and murals that come to life? Gotcha covered. Olivia is simply angelic.

ONJ was a legend. Always will be. The augmented 5th featured so prominently in that song, and rarely ever heard in pop music, really does invoke magic and the supernatural. In Xanadu, Olivia was a muse, Kira, who was trying to influence a mortal man to pursue his artistic dreams. Me, I’d follow ONJ anywhere! The movie was controversial at best, but the soundtrack was amazing. “Magic” was Olivia’s greatest hit. From the dawn of the 1980’s, it really was magic.
@larrycj43824 жыл бұрын
With the 80s revival today, you may want to check out another of Olivia's hits: "Twist Of Fate" which has an 80's modern rock sound! It peaked at #5 in the US in January 1984. She has an amazing singles catalogue!

Olivia is the best pop vocals female forever
@TheRatsCast2 жыл бұрын
You really have to understand the idea of this song to understand the words. This was a part of the movie Xanadu; where she played Kira, one of the Nine sister muses. Her propose was to inspire Sonny into creating his own ideas for a night club, while also helping another person who she helped once, who's dreams didn't come true. While skating in an abandoned building; she meets Sonny, with this song playing in the background. It's meant to be foreshadowing of what she is on Earth for. To Bring All His Dreams to Life! it's a pity; you never got to react to any of her other works. And now that we lost her; it's the perfect time to remember her and her music.

I heard this soundtrack album (for Xanadu) when it first came out. I bought the movie DVD and the CD. Yes, it was a cheesy 80s movie. The "romantic" lead actor had all the charm of a paper plate, but I thought Olivia did a good job. And I think it was Gene Kelly's last movie. And he looked like he was having fun. I think I read or heard Olivia say he worked her hard on their dance routine. But she did learn to dance. :o)
