When you write a record, you get paid, when you produce a record you get paid, other than that, the singer only gets paid to sing like going on tour. Every time she sang the song she made money. When the record was no longer hot, she stopped getting calls to sing it. Rich on the other hand, wrote it and produce it, he will get small money for life, in hopes he recovers what he spent. Nah rich wasn't wrong, artist are always the last to get paid. Whoever owns the song, writers, managers and producers all get paid first and the artist gets what is left over. If the song didn't do a lot of numbers the artist could end up with nothing. If they don't do any of the above an artist really can only make money through touring and advances, meaning you can negotiate a better contract for yourself if your songs do really well the first time around because now you have proved the label needs you and can make good money off you, so they will take care of you the second time around to keep you.

D. Scipio hi, an artist here. She does make money from the song; she’d be listed as performer in the credits. They only get a small percentage tho. Producer, Writer, Engineer. All is listed and paid. Most the times the producers also engineer. Writers and Producers get the most money (highest percentage) cause they create the song.
