@TitaniumDragon9 жыл бұрын
Who holds the high dive record is a matter of some contention. Dana Kunze has a very good argument for holding the record at 172 feet. Why? Well, the answer is pretty simple: Kunze swam out of the water on his own. The idea is that if you can't swim out of the water on your own, it doesn't count because, well, any idiot can throw themselves off a 200 foot cliff, the trick is doing it and not getting injured. No one has managed to jump more than 172 feet (Kunze's record) and emerge from the water without injury. Dickison, Favre, and Bok have all jumped further than 172 feet, but none of them were capable of swimming out of the water on their own afterwards. Kunze has done a 172 foot dive MORE THAN ONCE without injury. The record for the furthest uncontrolled fall is several miles, which vastly exceeds anything that these folks have done.

Kunze's 172' dive may have been five feet under Favre's, but Kunze: 1) left the water unassisted and uninjured (a competition standard that the Swiss overlook); 2) wore LEGAL knee support, basically just tape; 3) performed a more difficult dive, executed better than Favre's. Anyone who follows extreme diving should acknowledge that Kunze is the superior diver and rightful record holder. After all, Favre entered the water horribly and was assisted out with a broken leg. This is a sham "record".

Yes, but a world record is a jump, where you leave the water unassisted. Clearly this doesn't count. Luhe “Otter” Villagomez, an amateur bridge jumper, clearly beat all of these guys by a long shot when he jumped off of the Golden Gate for a dare during a field trip. He was not suicidal, having jumped many before his record, and suffered relatively minor injuries, considering his rather idiotic feat: a punctured lung and broken tail bone. He claimed to have wanted to try to surf his way out on the board that was used to rescue him. By all of the standards of professional jumping, I don't see why he wouldn't clearly be the winner. He was far less injured than this guy and was capable of swimming and even walking afterwards.
@Cerus986 жыл бұрын
Joel Teply - Because injuries are irrelevant. Otter isn’t a record holder because he did not leave the water under his own power nor did he complete a full rotation. Any idiot can jump off a bridge. The challenge and skill is to do it without injuring yourself to the point of needing help.

@CusterFlux11 жыл бұрын
So, how fast was he going when he hit?
@choppaprodАй бұрын
since you wrote this in 2013 and haven’t gotten a reply, here you go: To determine how fast you would be traveling after falling 177 feet, we can use the principles of physics. Specifically, we'll use the equations of motion under constant acceleration due to gravity. Calculation Assume the only force acting on you is gravity (ignoring air resistance for simplicity). The acceleration due to gravity is \( g = 9.8 \, \text{m/s}^2 \). First, we convert the distance from feet to meters: \[ 177 \, \text{feet} \times 0.3048 \, \text{meters/foot} = 53.9448 \, \text{meters} \] Using the kinematic equation: \[ v^2 = u^2 + 2gs \] where: - \( v \) is the final velocity - \( u \) is the initial velocity (0 m/s, since you start from rest) - \( g \) is the acceleration due to gravity (\( 9.8 \, \text{m/s}^2 \)) - \( s \) is the distance fallen (53.9448 meters) Plugging in the values: \[ v^2 = 0 + 2 \times 9.8 \times 53.9448 \] \[ v^2 = 1055.30608 \] \[ v = \sqrt{1055.30608} \] \[ v \approx 32.49 \, \text{m/s} \] Conversion to mph To convert meters per second to miles per hour: \[ 32.49 \, \text{m/s} \times 2.23694 \, \text{mph per m/s} \approx 72.69 \, \text{mph} \] Conclusion After falling 177 feet, you would be traveling at approximately **32.49 meters per second** or **72.69 miles per hour**. ### Important Note This calculation assumes there is no air resistance, which in reality would reduce the final velocity slightly due to drag.
