If I lived in France during Messiaen's time, I would attend the Sainte-Trinité church every Sunday just to hear his improvisations. That would be just amazing. I have to imagine there were some who did exactly that.
@chronochromie77210 ай бұрын
People indeed did so. However, this offended Messiaen more, as he wished for them to attend ultimately for the glory of God; and not merely to hear him play. He was also delighted, though, that he could evangelise through music.

@@chronochromie772 Messiaen is absolutely my favorite composer, but I don't believe in God. If I had ever met him when he was alive, I would not bother to mention that!

3:27 is an improvisation on the Alleluia Pascha Nostrum chant, a very famous and historic one.

Invaluable gold treasure 🙏 Thanks a lot, yes he conceived his improvisations as materials for works to come

Thanks a lot to you! A notable example of improvisations inspiring his later works is the Messe de la Pentecôte, one of the most advanced works in his œuvre-indeed, this work is, in his own works, 'formulated from all of his improvisations' at La Trinité hitherto; such is it that it actually represents an amalgamation of all of them til its composition. At least this is what he remarked, considering how said piece is actually too advanced to have been improvised; but we do detect its improvisational qualities. Do take note he was a student of Marcel Dupré. His improvisations were outstanding, and among others, his students were Guillou, Cochereau, and the Duruflés!

French organ improvisations played by the fabulous French organist of all time. You can't get better than this. I also listen to Cochereau and Latry.

This made my week! I've learned a great deal of his repertoire, over the years. Along side Dupre, Longlais, Vierne, and others from the French School. I have to say, Messiaen has to be my favorite.

Magnificent improvisations! He played like he wrote some pieces before the concert and casually read out live. Stunning work and big treasure for people who want to improvise and improve their sense of form. Messiaen was out of this word and his music is still alive :)

Les improvisations d'Olivier Messiaen, que j'avais rencontré à l'église de la Trinité dans les dernières années de sa vie, paraissent très différentes de ses œuvres, beaucoup plus sophistiquées ...

Thank you so much for this! Messiaen was such a genius! Clearly he used his improvisations as a `lab' for his compositions, in particular his Livre du Saint Sacrement of 1984, but there's so much more to them than that.

Thank you so much for posting this. A few years ago someone else did and I was I love with it and then it went missing, so I’m glad you uploaded it. He’s a fantastic improviser and it’s easy to get lost into these little sonic realms he creates.

Messiaen improvising shows his debt to Tournemire: they sound almost identical.

One must also hear the influence of Widor...
@sathya9997 ай бұрын
To these ears, there is a great deal of difference between Messiaen and Tournemire. But then ALL music ultimately comes from the same Source, but coursed through different body suits. Composers who are more in touch with Source (who all really are) tend to write/play music which sounds "mysterious" to those who listen from the mind. So never mind... This type of music is enjoyed by those with no expectations...and are open...

I hear Durufle, Dupré, and Widor, but less so because Widor wasn’t too modern
