I had one of the higher ollies of my friends growing up but it was all cannonball style. No internet, no tutorials, all we had were grainy VHS tapes. I wish I had access to content like this when I was 16. At 47, trying to learn better (tweak) technique with so much wear and tear is definitely not easy. @PHeMoX2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I think most ollie trick tips severely lack in explaining how the 'galloping part' is what makes the trick work. Yes, sliding your front foot up is super important, however the entire motion is more like hopping over a fence with front leg first, shortly after followed by the back foot. I'm sure an exaggerated ninja kick makes it go super high, however most people don't really crouch down enough to get max ollie height in a more regular jump intensity.
@warhammer12 жыл бұрын
And some don’t even need to, like Westgate, so much damn pop.
@PHeMoX2 жыл бұрын
@@warhammer1 Yeah people definitely make it look that way, but without proper timing and moving the legs up, the amount of pop doesn't really matter that much. I mean, ultimately that's more so something that defines how quick you can go up, and probably less so the maximum height. 🤔

Thank you very much for this video! I've been ruminating about this technique for awhile. I watched a lot of Ollie tutorials (tutorials in English/Japanese/Korean) but their explanations were always different. And this was the FIRST video that mentioned one-footed jump which helped me improve my Ollie a lot! So thanks again Dan! There are still some confusion regarding Ollie technique. Could anyone clarify which would be better? 1. Pop straight down vs Pop slightly backward 2. Jump straight up vs Jump forward ps. The one thing that helped me the most was not the technique or knowledge.. it was fixing my posture. 8 yrs of programming job basically exacerbated my back muscles, tight hip, hamstring, calf muscle, round shoulders, forward neck etc.. It was nearly impossible for me to maintain balance as my weight distribution was heading forward when I crouch down. I tried Yoga and weight lifting as a rehab and I got much better at skating in general.

So it's basically a vid of Dan calling out people he's taller than :D I teach beginners on Saturday mornings and I tell all of them that the secret to a good ollie is 2 million bad ones. There is a lot to be said for that muscle memory building. I'm old and skating on a used knee(cadaver ACL replacement)so I kinda stopped doing Ollies for a long while. I lost that muscle memory and worse, the comfort that comes with doing Ollies all the time. Ive been doing them more lately but I still have a way to go to get back to where they are comfortable again. That tip about jumping off the ball of your foot is a golden one. Being near tiptoe with your heal up is where that power comes from. It also helps you keep your board straighter in the air because your whole foot isn't doing the popping and messing up which part of the tail hits the ground.

When you said your back foot comes off when you ollie that is in itself the key! One must leave a push behind their back foot and then pull the board up with their other leg and flatten it out but never put ones back foot all the way to the ground it is an action of leaving a push/pop behind one's back foot... we think alike brother that's exactly how I used to teach people how to Ollie, I would say the same thing your back foot is going to come off if you're popping properly

try ollie up ledges that are too high and it forces you to bone the ollie oue and tuck. once you can get your fronty truck on the back truck will go on too. pump your ollies too as nobody ever does this and i used it to jump on to 5ft walls so it works but also im 6ft2 so that helped a lot. if your ollies still really suck your trucks and wheels might be too low as i rode high trucks and risers but the whells were normal size for street.

I just started watching alot of your videos lately (haven't seriously skated since like "01" over in Okinawa while in USMC) and always wondering who alot of the guys are ur skating with are cuz you're all real good. After hearing some names thrown around, and seeing the one video of Andy Anderson and the barefoot girl (through research realized thats his girl) skating at the Venice park, i decided to look up the Powell Peralta skate team. And wouldn't ya know there you are along with others you skate with. Now this may come as no surprise to those following skating over the past few years. But in my hayday of skating 87'-01' the only way to watch pros skate was videos like "Public Domain" etc. And then they never showed how many tries it took to land the clip. So in watching your videos you get a new introspective on pro skating, that they dont just land every rad trick 1st try. Lol i know this may sound silly but it was the image conveyed to people back then. Your videos make skating much more relatable with the every day kid who just loves to skate. I'm 45 and still have a Lipstick "Aaron Rooney" complete and have been thinking about getting back into it. Living in the Niagara Falls area we never had a good place to skate. Now there is a skatepark here that Tony Hawks foundation helped to build that goes mostly unskated (at least what I see driving by). These kids nowadays dont know how fortunate they are to be blessed with a local park they can hone their skills on. But getting back to the point just wanted to say i love your vids!! Its truly amazing to see real life how the team travels, practices and interacts w themselves and other people on a daily basis. Keep up the good work. Oh and your write up on the Powell team site is hilarious 😂 and you're better than you think.

A good Ollie is the most underrated move of them all . If you do sick ollie transfers that is the shit right there , when I was young I did them from ramp to ramp , shit was so scary and amazing . I suck my lets way up otherwise I would of never made it . Almost smashed my face one day , I came off in the air my legs were kicking hard out and then I just put my arms out infront of me otherwise I would have no face lol . But when you get that pop and that air , now that feeling is true skateboarding . It was like I had to more or less manual then pop out on that ramp , was a bit weird . Some of the best ollies I ever did tho . I could feel wind flying past me , bit like some pop shovits I did years ago on this ramp . I think people called them illusion flips , looked a bit like a hard flip . I had this real weird way of doing them . Many moons ago now tho . Did this boned out pop shovit tail grab for my friend over this pyramid to the flat one day and never again . Shit was the most boned out shit I have ever done . I said to my friend did ya see it , he said I saw you roll away :( I was thinking fck you bro . That shit was some insanely hard shit . Skateboarding is great when you are younger , gets quite hard at 44 tho .
