I think it is a mistake that all mappers portray the declaration of the Austrian Empire as instantly superseding all the other Habsburg kingdoms in 1804. In reality it was a largely symbolic gesture and the duchies and kingdoms retained autonomy, particularly Hungary. In fact, Hungary had more autonomy than it would later have after the Austro-Hungarian compromise, and this lasted until the Revolutions of 1848 which is when Austria actually became centralised.
@jameshoxworth64477 ай бұрын
So basically, the Austrian Empire was a union of duchies and kingdoms under Habsburg rule?

@@jameshoxworth6447 yes though they increased their influence during absolutism especially on smaller duchies though hungary was in personal union with Croatia as kingdoms
@TIARASWEEKEND7 ай бұрын
@Tovalokodonccan you explain more?
@kolomaznik3336 ай бұрын
@@TIARASWEEKEND I will try, but I do not specialize on that time. And I admit that hungarian topics are not familiar to me. Points 1, 2 and 3 are just some very general historical context, if you want it. 4. Austrian war with Prussian in 1866 ended with Austria defeated and in state of crisis. And not that loyal Hungarians were ready to use that (instead of loyal Czechs for example). To avoid collapse of the empire emperor conceded to the most of hungarian demands. In austro-hungarian compromise of 1867 the realm of austrian emperor actualy became confederation of two states. Almost all of 1848 revolution demands were accepted. Hungarian constitution was restored and only compromise law was only common constitutional law of both states. "Austria" (Lands represented in Imperial council) and "Hungary" (Lands of the saint Stephen crown) had only common: monarch and imperial-royal family hence the common foreign policy and military matters and common finances to finance all of that (including currency and customs area). Well Pragmatic sanction of 1723 was base for that. Everything else was independent. Like goverment, citizenship, laws, international commerce, internal affairs, elections, courts, cultural matters, education, health and social issues, etc. Austrian part became more and more liberal (1907 universal male sufrage, crown lands had their own diets that dealt with "regional matters"). While hungarian part was quite liberal but in sense of one common hungarian nation (hungarisation of minorities). Also after WWI peace treatries were made separately with both states. There was no common laws or parliament. Common matters (especially finances) were solved (or not) by delegations every ten years. I guess that idea that pre 1848 Hungary had more autonomy stems from power of the king after 1867 and then officially common foreign (and military) issues. I guess. 1. Habsburg lands were ruled by this dynasty (another story) but when dynasty came to the end of the male line last male ruled created Pragmatic sanction of 1723 approved by diets of all lands and main part was that: A) indivisible union ruled by same monarch and B) male line primogeniture succession but in the event of end of male line the daughters (or in general closest female(s) in male line) of last living male will be for succession purposes considered as male (still same primogeniture rules apply). So after dead of Charles VI his eldest daughter Maria Theresa inherited this mess.... She and her husband made start of Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty (only surving branch of House of Lorraine). 2. Grandson of Maria Theresa the last HRE Francis II in the possible event of takeover of HRE by Napoleon who proclaimed himself emperor in may 1804, Francis in fear of losing imperial dignity proclaimed himself as "hereditary austrian emperor". By that in did not changed laws of his (separate) lands or created new united country. As emperordom were labeled all his domains or all domains ruled by head of the dynasty (also head of primogeniture austrian line, because tuscan and modenese lines exist also). It was also not elevation of archduchy of Austria! The name was over time naturaly transmited to all domains he ruled. DIfferent lands had different rules and privileges. Kingdom of Hungary (kingdom that was never part of HRE) already had some specific privileges that made it "most autonomous part". 3. Over the time on most domains monarch power was more and more centralised (Metternich absolutism). In 1848 revolutions around Europe happened, including Austrian realms. Hungarians wanted even more autonomy or almost outright independence. Revolution was crushed with help of russian forces. And laws that made Hungary independet under common ruled were revoked. After that there was several attempts for united constitution but in 1851 constitution was revoked by emperor. And centralisation continued. After several years Austria was worse and more and more people wanted autonomy and constitution. So in 1860 and then in 1861 constituon for all domains ruled by emperor was made, which made Austrian empire single state made of several different parts. Hungary retained kind of special position (common parliament left internal hungarian policies to diet of Hungary) but it was too little in the eyes or Hungarians.
@gabortoth8595 ай бұрын
you have it backwards. From the 18th century Austria tried to centralize the empire. In 1848 we had revolutions due to liberals wanting to take part in legislation. After 1886 was a partial federalization (Dual monarchy) but it was not nearly enough and that's why it was so easy to break it apart in 1919.

Through centuries, their dynasty reigned, In history's annals, their name ingrained. From Alpine peaks to Danube's flow, Their influence spread, a timeless glow.
