Will you master level 3...?
This video is a medley of five (5) different Karate seminars by André Bertel. Those workshops and classes took place in Germany and Italy between 2010 and 2019. It's all about improving your posture and balance. But it doesn't stop here. If you watch and listen carefully you will discover many more aspects that are essential to effective Karate.
Inside the video you will also find several written ideas for exercise variations. Since they only appear for a very short time, just pause the clip for reading. Of course, you are welcome to come up with your own creations and to share them in the comment section below.

It's true, those exercises are not for everyone. And you don't have to do them to train the Karate of Bertel sensei. Focus on softness, relaxation, posture, using the hip correctly and so on. Check out his blog for more information.

I am a direct 6 Dan student of Master Shirai. I know very well that Bertell shows (well) very athletic things. But my impression is that Bertell's rallies are more demonstrations of his athletic ability than places where a large mass of Karateka can learn things that are really useful to her. In fact, many things that Bertell does can actually train only a few people. Then there are (and also many) who can train only him and / or very few others. These are indeed pure performances. Furthermore, I would also remember that there is NO direct relationship between incredible athletic qualities and real effectiveness of the technique. A master like Morio Higahona is not very spectacular but I do not think that Bertell, in a real fight without rules, would survive more than 30 seconds against him ...
@olliwaa
@olliwaa 2 жыл бұрын
What you see here is an extract of five different seminars. And these exercises are part of a much bigger picture. Speaking of Shirai, I attended 2 seminars with him in Hamburg. All I remember today is endless kihon combinations and his students showing off an extremely hard type of Karate that was impossible to follow for me. I left those classes completely frustrated. Seeing this famous grandmaster was great but what for if I can't take anything away for my own development...?
@shotokar4211

@@olliwaa I have a little white hair. I am 6 Dan and a direct student of Master Shirai (for over 45 years). For this reason I think I understand a little bit of the real effectiveness of the technique and the connection between this and the qualities that you try to achieve during training. Always in search of absolute effectiveness, I also approached the world of MMA in 2007, where I became an Instructor. It matters little whether what Bertell shows is part of an overall plan of 5 or 10 Karate gatherings. The fact is that it is about athletic qualities that revolve around very particular athletic qualities and accessible to very few individuals. Just look at the faces of the participants in his internships to understand what I mean. Everyone has a surprised face because of the Mae Geri Jodan being pulled from half a meter away, his jumps, etc. etc. but NOBODY can imitate him a little. As for Bertell's type of technique, I would like to say that it is very easy to show certain things against people who do not move and who tremble in front of you in a mixture of respect, fear and for this reason they almost pee. in the pants. I would really like to see if Bertell could do the same things against an unpredictable, violent opponent who has no respect for him. I don't think Bertell would survive more than 1 Minute a Sparring against my son (professional MMA fighter in 78 Kg). I would be ready to bet 10,000 Euros.. Indeed I am almost sure NO, that it is NOT possible to perform that kind of techniques against opponents who want to KO you with simple and solid techniques. The difference between Berrtell's training and Shirai's training is that it is a possible training without very particular athletic qualities. Training often like them you become strong like them.

My impression...........he looks OK when dealing with compliant fools, as was often the case I say this having studied and taught Shotokan for many years and finding it desperately unfulfilling despite reaching 3rd Dan. Switched to Goju whuch was more rounded, more physical and more realistic. Was then advised by Terry O'Neill to train with Steve Morris.....blew everything out of the water......this man is a true master of his art, combat. His depth of knowledge I believe is second to none. I trained under most of the Japanese senseis of the 70s & 80s and have found none that matched Morris....truly awesome man, though not imbued with the greatest of interpersonal skills, but he is what he is. This is an old video of his....have to say he was the fasted and most powerful person I ever had the privilege of studying with kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6K4XqGgath3otU&ab_channel=SteveMorris

For me, karate, especially shotokan, is more theoretical, because there is no evidence that it might be in the form of a video that shows it is useful in a real fight. In real matches, for example, the UFC also has to adopt a punch boxing style, but with these modifications, the moves learned so far will appear useful, so in my opinion, karate is still raw material so in its use it still needs to be processed.
