I had that same SM-7, in that color, but traded it some years ago. Both of those are superb machines. The carriage vs. basket shift makes a difference, though.

Your SM9 is a wide carriage model. Typically, they have the same size carriage as your SM7. Also, the paper rest should latch on the SM7 in the same way as your SM9. It could do with a little adjustment maybe. Great Vids btw. Keep it up.

The Deluxe uses the red and black ribbon, the standard model uses straight black, and some deluxe oylimpias have a leaver that has a setting to change typing settings from firm type to light typing

My parents got me a 1968 SM-9 when I started high school. (Yes, I am old.) I remember thinking long & hard about which carriage to get, regular or wide. I chose wide, thinking it could come in handy someday (and not thinking there was any downside). Well when I sold the SM-9 eleven years later, I had never taken advantage of the wide carriage; never needed to type a wide table or anything. Not even once. And I had spent 12 years lugging around a very large, very heavy typewriter case! Now I’m thinking of getting another SM-9, only this time with the standard carriage. (But do I really need a ninth typewriter? Sigh… no. No, I do not.) 😱

I just got a free Olympia sm7! It just needs a clean, new ribbon, and the sound proofing reinstalled! The only thing is I would like it in blue, but since it was free white is fine. The 2 tone keys helps that.

Fantastic video! I have a SM 7, SM9 and a wide carriage SG-3. I love my Olympias. I used my 7 and 9 to write the first two drafts of my latest novel....what a wonderful experience....thanks again...

well, speaking for a Malaysian, we have plenty of late 70's SG3 models around in the marketplace and a much rarer sight is the SCM models. LOL

The SM 7 also was available with a wider carriage and vice versa the SM 9 came with a smaller carriage.

0:59-1:16 Totally RIGHT re.Smith-Corona v. Olympia. My Smith-Corona manual + Electric were workhorses, but my Smith-Corona electric burned in a fire so I Had ro go Olympia--Bad Choice!! SC electric gave no problems in 3 years I had it(then fire); but the Olympia Report Electric Deluxe was in the shop 3rd, 5th & 6th years I had it; I couldn't even finish my last college paper on it, had to do it on my Smith-Corona manual(I'd had it 15 yrs, now have had it 50 YEARS!!) Yes, Smith-Corona is BETTER BY FAR! 😁🤗

My 70's era "ROYAL" has been indestructible under extreme abuse from my very heavy hands! Meanwhile my Mom's OLYMPIA has suffered a few glitches under those same "stresses" and is in need of some "TLC" from a qualified technician.

But you do know, that your SM9 is a wide carriage version? That’s also why the case is so big. It can take an A4 sheet in landscape or an A3 sheet in portrait orientation. “Deluxe” just means that it is an SM9 and not a Monica (which used the same case and is hard to distinguished from the outside). A lot of typist nowadays consider the SM9 the best typewriter ever made. Do you agree? You do not show a lot of the features and performances of these machines. E.g. what make me wanting a SM9 (beside it being stated as the best machine ever) is the paper support that also works as a end of paper indicator. A very useful feature, that is hardly found on semi portables.

Beautifully done. I recently picked up an ultra-clean 1972 SM 9. Wow, what a machine! Functionally, this typewriter makes the others in my collection feel wooden. One interesting note, my model does NOT have the script Olympia logo on the back.I noticed your SM9 platen is a bit white. So is mine. Any ideas? I'm going to do an alcohol clean and see what happens. Again, fine work.
@JustMyTypewriter3 жыл бұрын
I've tried simple green on the platen because I didn't want to mess with any thinners on it. It doesn't seem to impact its functionality though
@WaldronPondOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@JustMyTypewriter Update: I used Max Pro Rubber Rejuvenator to very carefully clean the platen while still inside the machine. It cleaned all the white haziness off the rubber. I sprayed the product onto a micro-fiber towel and wiped it across the platen, advanced the platen, wiped it again, etc, etc. To get it completely clean, it took a few revolutions. Also, I too own a Royal Aristocrat. The vibrator was missing the spring that holds the vertical ribbon guides causing the ribbon to routinely bunch while typing. I used a silicone orthodontic bank (1/4") to wrap behind (not the front where it will rub and keep the vibrator from moving up and down) the vertical guides. It's a less than one cent fix if you happen to encounter it. All the best and keep up the fantastic content!

I’m just hunting for a sm7 in the blue just like what you have. I have some SM2s, Joan is a 3, 1x 4 and an splendid 33. The sm7 has the retro chic look - also has that VW Beetle vibe. A bit ugly but also a bit cute.

Products made in GERMANY have always been regarded as the "GOLD STANDARD" for engineering which all the others in the world are judged by. That sometimes can backfire on them though... There is such a thing as "OVER" engineering anything. Inevitably making them more complex and prone as such ironically to a higher rate of failure than their "inferior" competitors. Witness the tanks of WWII as examples. Germany produced the "PANZER" first which led the invasion on Poland then FRANCE. An amazing new steed in the new, mechanized cavalry. It was followed by its GIANT, super heavy, super powerful successor the "TIGER" and "KING TIGER" tanks. The most powerful ever fielded into battle at that point and virtually indestructible to fire from their allied counterparts. However... It was this complexity of design and operation which ultimately DOOMED them. Constantly down for repair their actual time in battle was severely reduced just when it was needed the most! What goidvis a superior weapon if it's chronically out of action? Not much; Especially because it takes much longer to build an identical replacement for it than say the much simpler "SHERMAN" tanks of the USA or the "T" series of SOVIET made ones. WWII was won on the basis of virtually unlimited, domestically available resources to the allies and the AXIS powers lack of them. Thus? The "KING TIGER TANK" syndrome. Huge, unbelievably powerful and in EVERY way one of the NAZI's true "WONDER WEAPONS" of the future but... Too complex, too ambitious and over engineered for it's time in history. It was "SWARMED" to death by its smaller, lesser, more easily replaced adversaries and ultimately defeated in battle. WWII was truly a conflict of the doctrine of defeat via attrition of machines, materials and most importantly men. Such a conflict, on THAT scale isn't likely to repeat itself but then again history is rife with examples of those who FAILED to learn her lessons and did just that! NAZI GERMANY, IMPERIAL JAPAN, AND FASCIST ITALY of the WWII era are all classic examples of that principle. What are your thoughts if any on the above? Any "REPLY" will be appreciated.

Notice the "sexist" illustrations in the flash SARAH showed of the OLYMPIA print advertisement. Two very attractive young ladies sitting over their OLYMPIA machines. Not a guy in sight! After all these were considered essential "office machines" for the majority FEMALE secretarial pool. The BOSSES, majority MALE in those days, NEVER touched a typewriter themselves! Their "natural abilities" were used elsewhere in the organization never in such a menial task as "typing". That was strictly"girl's work". Very different world today, eh?
@johnc.bojemski17573 жыл бұрын
Remember young lady when you say "GERMANY" it now is OK to do so. However? In my "BABY BOOMER" generation? You had to SPECIFY just WHICH one you were talking about. From 1945 to 1992 there were first FOUR of them (The winners of WWII had carved up the country into zones of occupation (UK, FRANCE, USA, USSR). Then? as the "COLD WAR" dawned and the European ALLIES either couldn't afford to maintain their occupation or just decided to leave to handle their own colonial revolts... Germany, including its capital, BERLIN, was consolidated into TWO equal halves designated "EAST" and "WEST". Curiously, BERLIN now a divided city, later to be WALLED IN by the SOVIETS in their "EAST" section, was COMPLETELY within "EAST" GERMANY though the USA maintained its occupation of "WEST" BERLIN. The SOVIETS, by treaty, had agreed to allow goods and people to be trucked in and out of "WEST" BERLIN through their COMMUNIST controlled "EAST" GERMANY? UNTIL... ONE DAY?... THEY DIDN'T!!! The RUSSIANS decided to seal off ALL roadways into "WEST" BERLIN, indefinitely. Thus attempting to "STARVE" it into surrendering to USSR control. The USA and her allies decided to combat this move by the Soviets through supplying the "WEST" BERLINers with all their needs via AIR. Thus... A key moment in history known as... "THE BERLIN AIRLIFT" began and was sustained long enough to make the USSR concede defeat and reopen its "sealed" access to BERLIN. The leaders of the USSR and her allies (Laughingly named "THE WARSAW PACT NATIONS") were already in a worldwide competition with the USA for global dominance with proxy revolutions in former EUROPEAN colonial countries but NEITHER side wanted to spark WWIII now that BOTH had super powerful THERMONUCLEAR weapons with the land, sea, air and space systems to deliver them against their opponents. So... STALEMATE! Until the USSR itself finally collapsed under it's own weight in 1988 and it retreated back to within it's own borders and "EASTERN" EUROPE was finally free! The USSR would NEVER recover and by 1982 it had CEASED to exist. Russia, Ukraine and all the former SOVIET REPUBLICS were now separate, independent nations. Able to elect their own governments to run their newly freed nations WITHOUT answering to MOSCOW. Mikhail Gorbachev was the last leader of the USSR. His former colleague "BORIS YELTSIN" became the President of the new, free, RUSSIAN FEDERATION. Mr.Yeltsin suffered from a typical RUSSIAN vice, VODKA (Which didn't help him deal with the pressures of his newfound office.) that led to his acquiring the nickname "BOOZY BORIS". He finished out his term as PRESIDENT but was very skillfully "engineered" out of office by his popularly elected successor (A former high ranking member of the old "KGB"!) VLADIMIR PUTIN. Who, sadly, has reverted to many totalitarian ways in his administration including cutting a deal with another leader to yield the Presidency in favor of serving as "PRIME MINISTER" ofbthe RUSSIAN "DUMA" (SENATE) until he was able to reassure the PRESIDENCY once more. All under allegedly "legal" means via the RUSSIAN CONSTITUTION. This is where the world sits today. Once again "split" between EAST and WEST but now with another, revitalized rival to both... COMMUNIST "RED" CHINA. Which has become an industrial giant and is like a hungry tiger looking to make a victim for a meal of one or both of its hefty rivals. This is the world we NOW live in plus... Remember those "NUKES" I mentioned earlier? Other, smaller, rogue nations, looking to gain respect and a louder voice in world affairs now have them too. This is a recipe for total disaster! One mistake. Just one miscalculation by ANYONE in these new "nuke" nations could result in a total extinction for all the rest of humanity. This is the legacy of "EAST vs. WEST". GOD SAVE US ALL.

Being a typical "guy" the COLOR of my appliances and typewriters matters little to me as long as its not "PINK"!!! I know, I know.. That's a very sexist statement on my part. Sorry. CAN'T help it. Raised in the dark ages so for me... "BLUE = "BOY"! "PINK" = ""GIRL"! ALWAYS! I'm very happy with "SOLID" WHITE or BLACK as colors for my devices as well.
@JustMyTypewriter3 жыл бұрын
In the case of typewriters, color can contribute to the rarity and the value to the collector- much like a car. I don't think it has to be a statement on identity or gender if someone wants a blue typewriter, it could just be that a model in blue is more desirable to them as a collector. In the case of some of the Royal 50s Deluxe machines, many people are looking for the colorful machines simply because there were less made of them and that makes them more desirable.
