I am Japanese. When I was a student, I did not expect my parents to be there to cheer me on at a sports club tournament. I found out later that my parents were watching behind my back. It was a thoughtful gesture so as not to put pressure on me. There are many such families in Japan. Tsukishima's brother must be exactly that type. Sometimes there are families like the Wakunan family, but we always see them with a smile. However, when they win and go to the finals or national competitions, they form a cheering squad among parents. Japanese people like to be in a group, so they will actively participate in such activities.

actually not, the birth rate in japan is the lowest in the world, the main causes could be, the long school and work hours, usually the support of the family is usually the father who carries the greatest number of working hours, the social culture and the increasingly reduced number of urban spaces to inhabit, the suicides that manifest mainly in young people, and finally the classism that exists in the most populated cities (mainly tokyo and ozaka), according to statistics japan loses 600,000 inhabitants per year.

Karasuno v Wakunan is actually my favorite of the smaller matches in Haikyuu, because it shows how important Daichi`s leadership and consistency is to the team. I love how a reactor like Sarah was picking up all those little details about Daichi being so important in this match only to get him injured in the end. Just as Furudate had planed it. Also... SPOILER! SPOILER! The match against Wakunan is the most nerve-wracking in the whole Haikyuu (manga included), especially the 3rd set, two episodes from now. Like they could actually lose the thing. I made appreciate the fate of pro athletes and circumstances more. You can lose a match "on your way to the championship" just because of unexpected circumstances. When I taught in Japan, it was pretty common for only a few parents to be there at most games, but for big tournaments, they were usually there. I've never quite understood why the series doesn't focus more on the families, but it is a little unusual for so few family members to be there.
I think I read somewhere that the mangaka is not confident in his/her family dynamics plotline that they decided to not include much. Also as the comment below said- too many characters would be fighting for screentime.
As a Daichi fan, these recent episodes and upcoming episodes are my ultimate favorite because it just shows how precious Daichi is to the whole team

12:34 I think it's a haikyuu thing, there is a baseball anime called Big Windup (this is one of the best sports stories in my opinion and is written by a middle-aged sports psychologist and mother) and the family members of the players are pretty involved with taking care of the team during tournaments and training!
@かいえ182 жыл бұрын
Yes, Big Wind Up is a good example for showing how much the difference in between high school athletes and parents. Parents must be involved for financial reasons, especially those who are playing power house. However athletes, especially male athletes often show how much they are embarrassed if family members showed up for the games and cheering up front in Japan.
@@かいえ18 Yes, I think a majority of children of this age group feel embarrassed when their parents cheer loudly, teenagers generally don't like to get attention unless it's "cool"

Japanese people are all about work and discipline. And they work a lot to say the least. Even elementary school kids go to school by themselves, even on the trains you can see little kids commuting to school and back home on their own. Parents also teach kids to be independent from a very young age, they teach them how to do house chores and run small errands starting from grade school. So it is very rare to see parents supporting their kids during such events. Unless it is an event that specifically involves parents as well.

I really love the line "This is going to be a match about the captains" because it tricks you twice. First, because it sets up Daichi as the main character of the match, only to have him get injured. So then you think the line was a misdirection and the match is not actually about the captains. Except it tricks you AGAIN because it still is about the captains because... SPOILER . . . . . . . Both Ennoshita and Yamaguchi are the captains of Karasuno in their respective years, and both of them end up being the focus of the next episode. It's really brilliant.
@かいえ182 жыл бұрын
I am a Japanese and now living in the US. Also my job is heavily involved any kind of high school sports, including Volleyball. Most of Japanese high schools athletes, especially male, don’t like their parents coming to the game. Parents cheering up front and so loud like Takeru’s, they don’t like it. They appreciate their support in their minds but hoping not so recognizable. Sarah, they are just too shy.
@AllUpOns2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I played sports in high school (in America), and I agree that hearing your parents cheer for you is kind of embarrassing. But when everyone's parents are there (like they generally are in the US), they just blend into the crowd. If my parents were the only ones there and I could hear them, that would be way more pressure.

The thing you say about teams doing weird stuff being difficult sounds very much like a boxing coach I used to listen to here on youtube (I can't remember his name though), apparently for his fighters that were competing he would grab absolute newbies off the street and have them spar but because the newbies didn't know anything and were always super awkward with what they thought was good boxing...they'd end up being the most troublesome because they'd do the most unpredictable things rather than just jabs, straights and the textbook stuff that his fighters were used to. Even though the boxers could handle them. it was good training for them to get used to uncomfortable and unpredictable situations.

It's so funny how biased she gets, like when she gets upset about the other team's member laughing at a Karasuno guy while not reacting to Tsukishima smirking at his opponent just a bit later. LOL Anyways, a great watch as usual. Leaving my support as usual. Though I usually leave my personal opinions about some of the iffy translations, there actually weren't ones that really bothered me in this ep, so it's going to be REALLY about preference this time 'round. 8:53 「次からはケツ叩いてくれる奴はいないんだからな?」➔ "There's no one to whip your butts into shape anymore!". This is just fine (nice & short, too), but a more literal translation would be something like "'You know that there won't be anyone to whip your butts into shape from the next (game)". I just feel their line doesn't convey the nuance that the coach is emphasizing that this was THE last game for the manager that's present in the original line. 20:47 「和久南は、日向に対してとりあえず一人、コミットでブロック飛ばすけど、深追いはしないってスタンスかなぁ?」➔ "one blocker on Hinata for sure, but won't pursue, apparently" This is OK, but it kinda makes it sound like they're not gonna "pursue" at all with this phrasing. 深追い can be literally translated to "deep pursuit", & is used in battles, for instance, where a leader would say "Chase the enemy, sure, but don't go after them too deep/far", so it's not saying "don't pursue at all". Something more literal would be like "I wonder if Wakunan's stance is 'to keep 1 blocker on H at all times but don't get too hung up on blocking him at all costs'?".

it's becoming less and less normal for families to not attend games at school. Previously, because games happened during working hours fathers would be at work and mothers would likely be taking care of housework or your siblings, and they would only attend big games, or if their child is going to do the sport professionally. but work culture is changing slowly so fathers are able to actually get time off and mothers aren't expected to have a perfect home all the time. 5 years ago, it was considered maybe a little weird for me to attend my older daughter's soccer games, but now it's very normal for me to be at soccer, or my younger daughter's track events, some might even say double weird for me since I'm an only mother. I personally only have two children, and I would say that's very normal for Tokyo, but in Miyagi and other more suburban or rural sections of Japan it's a bit more normal to have a bigger family

One of the things that surprised me in the US when i lived there (I'm european) is the quite non existent amount of independance kids have compared to where i'm from. Like legit everyone i know when i was young would go on their own to practice even if it was far away, whereas in the US the parents have to bring their kids to every practice and do everything for them. I guess since the US is so car centric its logical that no kid can actually go anywhere without their parents, but i do find that depressing. In japan almost all kids and teens have clubs and/or sports activities after school and they mostly do those totally independantely. They all go to school on their own, they practice and take care of the school's infrastructure by themselves too. So it's pretty understandable that parents aren't as involved as US parents are. Because in general, Adults aren't that involved compared to americans. And i'd say it's quite similar in certain parts of europe too
