Vasiley Alexeyev is the only lifter in the video that I recognize. He was featured often on ABC’s Wide World Of Sports back in the ‘70’s.

For those who don't know, many eastern block countries boycotted the 1984 olympics held in the us, that's why the winning total for those games is almost 30kg lighter than the previous ones.

I remember reading about Vasily Aleksyeev as a kid -- he broke the record, a record 80 times! And there was that one time when he raised one leg up and held the weight with only one leg on the ground after finishing his lift! Now that is something!!! The reason he broke the record 80 times is that the Soviet Union paid him a bonus for every world record, so he would break his old record 1/4 kilo at a time.

I was a pre-teen and playing with my neighbor friends in my backyard when my father called to me that Vasiley A. was going to attempt to put up an official 500 c&j. Sure enough, I watched it live on TV. Ken Patera, from right here in Minnesota,was at that time the best US lifter, also in that league, but missing the highest stage.

no matter what weight may be lifted over head in the future Vasiliy Alexeev will always remain the greatest lifter ever to me , 80 world records , 255 kg clean and jerk that took almost 40 years to be surpassed ,who knows what more he could of done if he was not cut short by inside interests in his home nation . Interesting to note here that the snatch weight climbed much faster over the years ,while in four decades the 255 clean and jerk of the Soviet lifter Alexeev pretty much the bench mark , some full 40 years later the record in the clean and jerk is 266 kg a mere 11 kilos over the 1976 record , shows you just how far ahead the Soviet was .

Yes, and countries that boycotted happened to be major weightlifting powers. Pisarenko, the winner of the alternative tournament, Friendship Cup, did 200 + 265 that year
