I went to Fiji in 2017 and their nation is incredibly proud of this team. They made a $7 bill to honor them too. When I exchanged my USD to Fijian dollars, I noticed the $7 bill and told the clerk that I remember watching their rugby team winning the nation's first ever gold medal. The clerk then handed me a $7 bill signed by one of their players. I kept it and still have it to this day! Bula Fiji, I can't wait to go back someday!

@@kato2493 In Fiji, the British Royal Family is very highly respected because the Queen of Britain is also the Queen of Fiji. Their getting on their knees is a Fijian tradition showing respect to a member of that Royal Family.

For me, this was definitely one of the highlights of the Rio Olympics. I remember calling my sister who was still at work and urging her to watch this match. We were both stunned. We play rugby in Jamaica, but one could never say that it is in our top ten most popular sports. I had to watch this to the end though. It was an absolute joy to witness. I'll be watching for Fiji in the rugby whenever we manage to have the next Olympics.

I will never forget this game for as long as I live. Every Fijian will remember the feeling the moment the ref blew the whistle for full time and we became olympic champions! The pride, joy and utter disbelief that we had won! We showed that you don't have to be a rich rugby nation to succeed but that hard work, dedication and self belief will overcome all odds. We as a nation needed this so much especially after the country was destroyed by cyclone Winston! Thank you to the team, the management and especially the mastermind Ben Ryan!!

Greetings from Nigeria. I am a great admirer of Fiji Rugby 7s. The way they win with such grace and respect for their opponents. Their religious faith and the way they consistently dominate nations mightier than them in size and budget. If I get the opportunity to travel to a country I have never visited before, I would choose Fiji. They must be a truly unique people.

Fiji Prime Minister's words to our boys just before the finals in Rio Olympics (Translated from iTaukei Fijian language) "We have lost before so if you lose today, you will not create any losing history...you have reached the final and if you lose, we will still honour you for bringing home our first Olympic Silver Medal. But if you win, I tell you that your mothers at home will be proud and will recall the days when your mothers gave birth day to you. They were awake when you were sick. They did not sleep caring for you. When you took the first step, they are overjoyed. Do you want to bring that overjoy to your mothers again? If you do, bring the gold medal and hang it around your mother. After you have hung it around your mother, tell your mother that you run because she taught you how to walk and this gold medal is for her. If you do not win, you would bring tears into her eyes. Do you want to bring tears into the eyes of your mother in Fiji while you are in Rio? Go .... and play, not for the nation, and, not for the government ,because I am with you here. I am here to tell you to go and play for your mothers...." The Boys played for their mothers and hammered Great Britain 43-7. Tabusoro !- Never give up!

Yes very true..... Ben Ryan groom and build this team to become what they are. Since they were camping in a resort with access to alcohol and etc. he breathlyzer them every day. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes where the team trained has remains of our Fijian Ancestors dating back to over 3,000 years. Ben then starve the players with carbohydrates (energy food) a month before Rio then took them to the thin oxygen altitude of the Andes Mountains where they secretly trained for two weeks before bringing them to the sea Level altitude of Rio just two days before the opening of the Olympics... he then pumped them up with carbohydrates... The impact of this was like injecting the players with steroid.....

Yes, that book is a must read for anybody who has watched this game, one does not even begin to scratch the surface of realising the work that culminated in Fiji winning this medal if you have not read the book. It really makes you wonder how Fiji is able to be one of the top Rugby 7s teams with such an operating budget and how good could they be if properly funded. Fiji will forever be grateful to Ben Ryan and the members of the team for their sacrifices!!!

In Fijian culture kneeling (or sitting) and clapping is showing respect to someone of authority or nobility. All the players would have known who Princess Annne was. Her response to clap (reciprocate) after them is customary. She has visited Fiji several times and would have been aware of this. Good for her.

It's the first time they played rugby in the Olympics and who was the favourites going in? Not the New Zealand All Blacks, or the South Africans. Not Australia, Britain, or the United States. It's an obscure island nation in the Pacific, impoverished and recently devastated by a hurricane, but one who hasn't lost their faith in God and hope. A nation with nothing but a strong desire and a strong heart. And they lived up to their billing with a dominant win.

Fiji came to the Olympics as the number one rated sevens team in the world having won two IRB Sevens Series two years in a row. That same year they shocked the rugby world by giving a strong New Zealand Sevens team 44-0 in the IRB Series in Sydney.

Saw a talk today from Ben Ryan. Amazing stories. He did what he needed to do, and it was tough, but he recognised, I think, the amazing opportunity fate had thrown his way. Turn the greatest natural Rugby athletes this World has into the greatest Sevens team the World has ever seen. He, and they, managed it. Marvellous!

Fair play to Fiji. They’re one of the best teams to watch in 15’s rugby and it must mean, god knows how much, to these lads from a country with a population which is smaller than Birmingham’s, to win an Olympic gold medal.

I was in the stands watching the 5th to 12th places matches before the semifinals and some of those guys showed up there before their semifinal match against Japan, so I had the opportunity to take a picture with them. It´s funny because we are not familiar with rugby and its players here in Brazil, so only a few people really paid attention to them, including myself, but they are like the superstars of their sport and became national heroes after this gold medal.

Rugby is generally a British Commonwealth sport, largely amongst those with strong British influence (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, NZ, Australia, South Africa, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga) but is certainly not confined to those countries. France, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Canada, Romania, Georgia, and a host of others have strong rugby traditions in the 15-a-side game. In 7's rugby, the likes of the U.S., Canada, Kenya and others are more than capable of tipping over the traditional rugby nations.
