Germany win gold in the men's eight rowing event at the Eton Dorney as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (1 August).
Canada won the silver medal in the event with Team GB claiming bronze.
Rowing has been staged at all the editions of the Olympic Games, except in 1896 in Athens. It was, however, on the programme, but a stormy sea compelled the organisers to cancel the events.
Women made their debut at the Games in 1976 in Montreal. They competed in a smaller programme. The Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta marked the introduction of the lightweight events.

Germany's move on the last 250m brought me to tears. Half a boat-length of overtake in less than 100m is the kind of rare determination that makes this race so memorable.

What I truly appreciate -as a German- is the sportsmanship of English commentators. Be it football (soccer for our American friends) or here: they just give respect even when their onw team lost. No trash talk, no excuses like the water was wetter under the German boat, just acknowledgement of a great athletic performance... That's what makes a true champion. And they got us in Rio: UK Gold Germany Silver. It's a great rivalry of two countries with a great rowing history. I hope it goes on like this.

I'm going to pretend i didn't read that first bit. the bow seat must be one, if not the MOST, technically astute rower in the crew. a good catch, a strong drive and a clean tap are what is required to lift the bow seat out of the water to make it plane. not to say you are wrong, as the stroke must be up the top too, but the bow has a large responsibility, and thus must be adept.

Interesting that Germany should win this, looking back at the stats, they're so much lighter than the Canadian crew and the British crew, only a couple over 100Kg, whereas almost the entire Canadian 8 was 100+. The Germans were mostly around 92.

Adam Bark Why? When you look at the winner's times in the LM2X Vs the openweight, they're typically only 10 secs or so apart. It stands to reason that without needing to make weight and they could be only 5kg or so heavier, the difference would be even smaller. I think the whole bigger=faster thing in rowing probably merits a lot of re-examination. It's certainly true up to a point but I think the point of diminishing returns when it comes to on the water performance (as opposed to erg performance) is probably a lot lower than conventional wisdom suggests.
@rickkybobby8118
@rickkybobby8118 6 жыл бұрын
Aren't you defeating your own arguement when you say "if the LM2X were heavier they'd be faster". I'd argue weight/max power only comes into play if the technical skill of the rowers are equal. It's not about how fast you can make the boat go but how little you slow it down edit: for longer choppier races such as the boat race i believe weight/power plays a bigger role as its harder to be clean and if you're fighting waves the bigger crew tends to win more

Why are some boats mounted evens to port and odds to starboard, then some are mounted 1, 3, 6, and 8 to port and 2, 4, 5, and 7 to starboard? Does it make a difference? It seems like it would change the points of stress in the shell too.

Peter Sharpless rowers in the middle of the boat have the best position to pull because the middle is deepest in the water so my guess is that diffrent rigging is too put the strongest rowers in the middle
@reganmc.6640
@reganmc.6640 3 жыл бұрын
Typically different rigging is due to power differences between ports and starboards, say starboards are weaker than ports, they have more starboard near the outside where they have more control over how the boat turns, and ports in the middle where there is more control over power. As a coxswain is tough if one side is constantly out pulling the other because you have to stay on the rudder, it’s also hard for the rowers because the rudder slows the boat down
