As a graphic designer, I love that the olympics has always believed pictograms to be essential to their marketing! They understood early on that when you bring people together from all over, simple pictures and logos can go a long way in communicating a concept visually ❤ Just such a cool use of pictograms, we had a whole lesson about their history in one of the courses

The Paris pictogram designer really said "pictograms are a thing of the past" and threw away 60 years of history for this year's horrible designs, the exact year after Japan designed the best pictograms possible 💀

I love too how they showed a little bit of how graphic design was done before the advent of computers - and in effect, how it is still done, because the computer is merely a tool. People so deeply under-appreciate graphic design but it makes the world go round in ways people never notice.

Here in Canada the CBC decided this was the perfect time to cut to commercials; I only knew this existed because my wife is Japanese and she was waiting for this. And they showed literally 5 seconds of the drones.

for those who think this was something so seemingly small and insignificant, then blown away and amazed at the effort and movement put into this, I would like to remind them, TOKYO 1964 is the first Olympics who started using PICTOGRAMS as part of the imaginary and branding of the Olympics. Obviously, they want and really normal for them to celebrate on that history fact by performing this cosplay.

Not just that, the 1964 Tōkyō Olympics introduice the world to the very idea of simple universal extra-linguistic public communication AKA pictogramme. Before that, it was more complex or textual, so not foreign friendly.

Imagine if there wasn't a pandemic back then, Japan would have pulled off and EVEN GREATER spectacle, and yet they still managed to do so much in line with the spirit of the Olympics despite having sacrifice and compromise so much. 💖🇯🇵💖
hats off to the creative team behind this concept. it is much harder to pull off such a simple concept effectively. yet they pulled it off in a manner nobody anticipated. much better than the pissing contest of gaudy ceremonies that have become the hallmark of sporting events in recent history.
