USA's Missy Franklin sets a new world record of 2:04.06 to win gold in the women's 200m backstroke event in the Aquatics Centre as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (3 August).
Russian Federation's Anastasia Zueva won silver in the event with Franklin's compatriot Elizabeth Beisel claiming bronze.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Yeah it seems like she peaked in 2012 or 2013. But she will still be only 25 in Tokyo so she could make a comeback but with the depth in US swimming she needs to get back to her previous level and then get even better.

I've been watching countless videos of missy racing the backstroke just to see how she does her flip turn. I have a low 29 in my 50 back as a 14 year old but my 100 back is a 1:08 because I glide on my turns, is there any tips to help me fix that? I need a 1:06 to be varsity for my freshman year and I'm sure I could get it if I fix my turns
