Many forget that Puerto Rico beat the USA team on two previos ocasiones (the ones made of college playes). Once in México and the Pan American games in Cuba and in the World Cup in Argentina in 1990. It hardly made the news in United States but it did shook the United States Basketball Commitee. 2 years later the formed the Dream Team for the 1992 Olympics.

I remember watching this game live. it was either a saturday or sunday afternoon. And I was going crazy. I am a Puerto Rican. Born in the US, and i'm a veteran. I love my Country and I love Puerto Rico. Watching this game all I wanted and hoped was for Puerto Rico to have a good outing. And make it competitive. I didn't not think it was going to go down the way it did. USA had Iverson, Marbury, Duncan, Stoudamire, Lebron, Wade, Carmelo. and PR had arroyo and Ayuso and? But for that day all the stars aligned. And they played great. And they played hard. They deserved the win. And the US was hit with a dose of reality right in the mouth!

Solo hay que ver el estilo de juego de PR aqui en este partido, pausado, tomando su tiempo, pases inteligentes, sin desesperarse, contrario a estos dias, tan prnto reciben la bola ya quieren anotar mucha desesperacion cero pases y mucho turnover, dificil volver a ese nivel con esa mentalidad. It's hard to believe but Puerto Rico outplayed and outcoached the US on this game. The strategy of Puerto Rico of limiting the US players to only outside shots, worked like a charm. This will always be one of the most remembered victories of our Puertorican National Team for years to come because we did not beat that US team full of HALL OF FAME NBA PLAYERS, but we spanked them without a doubt. HOOORAY FOR THE BORICUAS!!!

This was such a huge embarrassment considering that Puerto Rico is a small U.S. territory. And the U.S. lost by 19. It was much worse than the 1988 USA team losing to Russia in the Olympics. That team was U.S. college kids vs. Russian pro players and Russia was a world basketball power at the time and won the gold medal. And the U.S. only lost by 6 in 1988. In 2004, Puerto Rico didn't medal (although the U.S. lost to gold medal winner Argentina too)

As much as I enjoyed Puerto Rico 's win , the US basketball squad was not undefeated in men basketball tournaments for 16 years.Notice it says " USA basketball" which implies any FIBA basketball tournament within a 16 year spam, since " US basketball" is the governing body which sends US teams not only to the olympics but also to all FIBA tournaments. Thus , the title is inaccurate.

Larry Brown is famous for his hate of coaching rookies. Some say Darco Milicic never developed because of him. Never gave him a chance. Not saying he was going to be an all time great, but maybe a decent rotation stretch 5 at the very least.

Honestly the 13 minutes he played he didn’t show any reason why he should be kept in game, many times as soon as the ball touched his hands he passed in less than 2 seconds. I wish he played more minutes because maybe he could’ve turned it around. But he just didn’t played well enough to be kept in game.
