Thorpe is on another level and is a unique talent not seen in more than 2 or 3 decades. He looks like he's having a relaxing freestyle while the rest work to keep up (behind). Even Michael Phelps doesn't have the same swimming style or presence.

wow, this is amazing it's been a long time since last watched Ian Thorpe swimming in the men's 400m freestyle final at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. I was in grade seven in primary school here in Australia and watched this live on Aussie tv stations here in Australia. Just like this was yesterday.

I swam in that Olympic pool in 1995). Don't remember the lane. I was shouted at by some coach, apparently that lane was intended for some other swimming style. It was not crowded, not sure why that guy got so nervous.

Thorpe here in 2000 is still faster than what they swim 400m in Rio 16 years later... and he retired so early into he's career who knows how quick he could of done if he's motivation from the sport didn't wane.

Alas all nations have golden periods and then the supply runs out at some stage. In fiarness Australia has a small population compared to say China, USA, or even France, Germany and UK say, so they are going to up against it on numbers alone. Normally they punch well above their weight from that perspective.
