is it not too dark ? I mean f4.8-6.7 and in Lumix g Vario 100-300 there is 4-5,6 with stabilization - is it not worth to pay little more and have Lumix instead ? I have Lumix g80 body

Hi Robin, thanks for the review of this lens. That was the first lens that I bought to supplement the 12-40 pro lens when I purchased my em-1 about 7 years ago. I do primarily landscape photography and since then have added the 14-150 and the 9-18mm lenses to my gear. Even though I have since upgrade to the em-1 mkii and currently have the 12-100 pro and 7-14 pro I find myself carrying the lighter weight lenses much more than I thought I would. They are great for both long hikes and travel. I actually wish Olympus would put weather sealing on both the 75-300 and the 9-18. That combination of weather sealed lenses along with any of the weather sealed omd bodies would be my dream system for hiking and travel. Im 75 years old and am starting to experience some physical issues. Having a really light weight system that performs well for my needs makes photography much more enjoyable. Thanks again for your great nreviews.

I’m ready! This is indeed a great little lens with a LOT of reach. When you have the light it’s a fantastic companion. Very fun to carry and shoot with. Results I thought were quite surprising, some of them (To me) rather stunning after a little bit of post. It’s not a Pro lens but size, weight and performance is all very good. Robin, wonderful images from your Zoo outing. Animals all look great, beautiful colors.. thank you!

Nice inspiring review! After years of having disqualified this lens as slow and optically limited, I just bought this lens (used) quite cheaply via eBay last week and I've had lots of fun with it. It's so tiny, yet I've been able to take surprisingly good and sharp photos of birds at the 300mm setting. On an OM-D E-M5 iii, this is such a light and casual kit that I'll be carrying around a lot more than my hefty 300mm F4 PRO. It's a great addition to my lens collection, for times when spontaneity is more important than pixel peeping.

I was at a camera store purchasing a different lens at the time when I saw this one. I asked if I could try it and they let me go outside and take a few shots. I was pretty impressed with it. No it isn't as good as pro lenses, but I found the type of rendering it produces is easy fix up in post. If you don't shoot raw, just set the contrast and sharpness higher in the image style you use and you can get good images.

I am so impressed with these images. I’m using the OMD-EM5-ii and find the images are soft and have so much shake even when not fully extended. The auto focus has been so slow for me. Do you always shoot in manual or on shutter priority ? I obviously need to perfect my technique because I am consistently disappointed :( perhaps I should use auto tracking or continuous / burst ?)

Great images and great review. I've had the 75-300 II lens for 2-3 years now. I agree, it's a nice lens as long, as you say, you have good light. I was surprised to see some of your images at lower shutter speeds of 1/100 to 1/320. I tend to shoot birds, raptors mostly, and typically set my camera to shutter priority and start at 1/1250 - 1/1600 sec, just to be sure and cover the 300 mm range. You got great results even at 1/100. I either have to work on my technique or drink less coffee :-)

Hi Robin great video and thank you. I have a 40 - 150 f2.8 pro lens which I use with a 1.4 teleconverter plus the 75 - 300mm.For my surf and kite surfing photography I prefer to use the 75 - 300 f4.8 - 6.7 II because of the extra zoom range and the images produced using high shutter speeds. Definitely an under rated lens.

Robin, thanks for the video. I shoot the Nikon D850 and D500 but want 1) a mirrorless and 2) small set-up. I am getting ready to order the E-1 Mark iii with the 12-40 Pro f/2.8 lens. Eventually, I will order the 300mm Pro f/4 but want to learn the new camera before investing another $2,800 for a lens. I have done a lot of searching and reviews of this lens when I found this video. I was able to pause the video to get a better look at your still shots and close up. Very respectable images. I have had this lens for about two years now, wildlife and birding being the main use for it, near my home in North Germany. Initially I was frankly disappointed in it, not very sharp, not very contrasty. I was thinking of replacing it, perhaps with the Panaleica 100-400. I have recently taken some shots on Mallorca in bright sunshine however and it is like a new lens - sharp and brilliant. I now realise I don't need a new lens, I just have to do all my birwatching in the sunshine and not the North German gloom! Thanks for the review Robin. Keep up the good work.

I have been considering this lens but have heard it is soft at 250-300mm. You commented on it in your review about the softness at 300mm but unfortunately, there were no examples. It would be very helpful (in a long telephoto lens review) to have approximate distances to assist the viewer in evaluating the lens. I'm considering this lens for shooting sailboats on the water where the distances range from 300ft/91.4m to 4000ft/1219.2m is common it would be discouraging to discover that this lens could only produce very soft images at that range (300mm). For example, I've used the very inexpensive Olympus ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R zoom Lens for shooting these distances for the last four years and have found the images to have "reasonable" detail considering the distance and would hope with a 300mm lens to see more detail in the image. So, too much softness (compared to 40-150mm lens) at 300mm in a lens that cost five times the 40-150mm lens would not justify the purchase. I know you've had experience with the 40-150mm what is your take on the comparison of the two lenses at these long distances? Another tool that would be helpful would be to leave a couple photos un-retouched, simple as they came out of the camera in jpg and/or raw. Perhaps in comparison to the one you retouch to see the detail, sharpness, and contrast difference. Many thanks for all your efforts, I always learn something from your videos beautifully produced videos.

I bought one of these last summer for use at airshows. Mounted it to an EM-1 Mk1. Clarity and focus lock at the full 300mm reach was iffy when shooting fast moving planes, but I did get a good number of sharp shots. I tried using the focus peaking for a while instead of auto focus, though I don't think my success rate was better either way.

Hi Robin, Your review is very detailed and your photos are beautiful, really imoressive. I am looking at this compact lens for a specific purpose. I want tio shoot tennis players at the US Tennis Open in late August. I realize the lens is slow at the 300mm length. I can kick up the ISO, because I will be shooting at high shutter speeds. I'll deal with the noise in post. Sure it's not a OM "pro" lens, but I'm not using the lens for a safari or other critical shots. I'll test it on different photos and see the results. Your review gave me ideas. I do have the lenses you mentioned, but I need a longer ZOOM for my purposes. This lens is very compact. 🌟 Thanks again, you've been helpful. 👌 📷 👍

Thanks for that review, Robin. Yes, of course we would all love to have the 40-150 Pro with a teleconverter and the 300 Pro. But those come together to over £3,000 (or Euros) rather than the £500 for the 75-300. Not everybody's budget stretches that far. So, I think it is time to borrow the 75-300 for a shoot.

It’s excellent, obviously, but it’s also very heavy and very large (about the same as the same as the old Olympus 180mm f2.8 from film days). I find that for most purposes I reach for the OMD-10.2 with the plastic 40-150 rather than the OMD1.2 with the Pro lens. It’s just so much easier to carry around.

Had this lens and sold it because I was going all weather-sealed, and I can confirm it's great value indeed in good light--but I would totally refrain from shooting past about 270mm and BE WARNED that cropping is not really an option when shooting at the long end of the lens. I think people should also understand that even with the in-body stabilization, the extreme lightness of this lens will make focusing slightly problematic--as opposed to say the 300mm f4, where the added weight helps you to stabilize naturally.

Hey Robin. I have an EM5 II and a 14-150mm lens (Olympus) which was just a super setup to begin with. I do mostly wildlife (mostly birds) photography and I'm looking for a new lens (aren't we all...). I'm looking at the Olympus 100-400mm (A$1700-2000) and the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm (A$1800-2100). Also looking to add a teleconverter (either x1.4, A$ or x2), which therefore pushes me to the Olympus rather than Panasonic (since I have an Olympus body). Of course I dream of the Olympus Pro lenses, particularly 40-150mm F2.8 ~A$1700 with a teleconverter. I think I'm leaning towards Olympus 100-400mm and a teleconverter (possibly x1.4 This lens is interesting selling at only A$500-600. Your images are amazing, but surely the 100-400mm gives better image quality, since you get what you pay for.

Love this lens - the zoom adds great flexibility. Fixed 300mm lens would be too restrictive for me. With this lens I take great macros as well as full telephoto images of birds. Adding a 10mm spacer provides a great combo for butterfly/ insect images. It is true however that the large f number combined with the small sensor increases noise in poor light conditions - so it does need good light for the best images. I view this lens as fantastic value at ~ $500 !!

Hi Robin, thank you for the video. I have this lens. Don't use super regularly but as you demonstrate in the video in good light she performs very well. Nice pictures. You have made me want to go out & use it, but can't because in Spain we are staying at home to minimize Covid-19 propagation. Hopefully when all is under control will enjoy shooting. In the meantime I have your videos! :-)

Funny I still use the original 4/3 version of this lens I love the AF/M button on that lens. I use it with the MMF-3 adapter. That lens takes awesome pictures. So I’m sure this one is much improved. Cool video as usual Robin.

Robin, have you ever used the Zuiko 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ED lens from the old 4/3 series lenses? I kept this one from my days of shooting with the Olympus E-520 and E-5 and now use it with the 4/3 to m4/3 adapter on my OMD series cameras. How would you compare the image quality of these two lenses?

Great explanation of the Olympus 75-300m lens. It will help me decide to go from my 40-150mm to the 75-300mm. If you have time, One question no one seem to know the answer to is - when I turn on my OM-D E-M10III camera it has started to hum or buzz, and sound changes when I press the shutter half way down. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for great job, Robin. I just bought 14-150 mm. It's obviously much better than 40-150 mm. What quality is this lens in compare with 75-300?

Thank you very much! You reenforced my opinion of this lens as I just bought it (slightly used) in December, 2019. Haven't had very many opportunities to use it as my day-job has been very demanding. Nonetheless, I am happy with my photos when the lighting is bright. My biggest problem is tracking flying birds (not the camera's fault). Just finding them in the viewfinder is the biggest problem. I'm practicing on finding the subject at 75mm and doing a fast zoom (more practice is needed). Small question: when hiking in very steep and rocky hills with the camera slung around my neck, the lens has a habit of sliding out to its 300mm length. Is this normal....or an age issue? I look forward to your next video!

My pleasure doing the video. I don't hike so I won't get to experience the lens extending out when moving about, but I guess that could happen if enough force is applied swinging the lens around.

I use this lens a lot with my GH5. Mostly wildlife and isolation type shots. As such, my experience is its a good lens but I want better. The Panasonic 100-400 is on sale but I don't know if it is that much better. Both may performing at the limits of the m4/3 format.

I’ve learned not to poo poo plastic construction of Olympus lenses. I picked up a used 40-150 Olympus lens for very cheap on a lark for my Panasonic G9. I am utterly shocked at how sharp this lens is. It feels like a toy lens but I use it all the time.
