Olympus E-PL8 and E-M1 mk2 SOOC Black & White JPG vs RAW. Should you shoot both?

I'm a RAW shooter - so where's the value in JPG? Let's discuss.....
Photography on the Olympus E-PL8 and E-M1 mk2 with the Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens.
Monochrome film profile, +2 contrast and "Ye" filter.

I shoot monochrome on cloudy days and low light times. The grain I do get looks good. I don’t have a computer to run any photo programs so whatever I shoot has to be edited on my IPad. Use a Pen E-pl10 and a E-P7

I do minimal editing on my iPad … big believer in getting it right in the camera. Apple Photos is the perfect app for light editing, especially JPGs. The E-P7 is a perfect street camera, with great color/mono settings(film sims) like the Pen-F.

8:40 E-PL8 is a E-M10 III without EVF. They messed up a lot of the controls on both, silent shutter for instance, same on the E-M10 IV IIRC. E-PL10 supposedly usable (again). Look up Helen's review and comments on DPR forum. I found the details in Guy Parsons timeline table which seems to be offline now, dropping a archived link below that might get through the YT comment gates.

I suspect Olympus never expected people to look across both camera lines..... and many users will be happy with either, but it's not very consistent! I can't see me ever moving to the E-PL10 as I like the occasional use of the EVF.... Thanks for watching!

RAW+JPEG for me on E-PL8. On a sunny day, outdoors the JPEGs are just what I want. Indoors though, I struggle with WB on the E-PL8 and the JPEGs have an odd mushroom vibe and the RAW is just a lot closer to what I want. Even if I liked 90% of the JPEGs I’d probably still shoot +RAW just to have the flexibility to adjust / try something different in LR. Would love to know your thoughts also on if you see much of an IQ difference between the 2 cameras and the extra pixels. I’m pretty happy with the ‘8’ but the E-M1 ii looks excellent value at the moment. Thanks

I can't honestly say I can see a difference in IQ in normal usage. There are a number of areas where the E-M1 ii is a better camera though. For me, the big plus is the fast EVF refresh rate (for sports). Then there's better stabilisation, high-res mode, greater customisation of film profiles, bigger battery, 4k video. I find the E-M1 a bigger, heavier, bulkier proposition - not really an everyday carry. They are quite different offerings, each better for different situations. Thanks for watching!

Good.. but.. which RAW editor are you using..? I do RAW on an ipad Mini and am testing lightroom mobile (used that these last 2 years), On1 raw mobile and Capture One mobile, plus Snapseed.. it edits raws!. The difference in output and control especially shadow/brights and noise is literally night and day! FYI C1 mobile is streets ahead especially in highlights and shadow recovery plus noise management..🙏. Cheers

Does the EPL8 blow red colours easily? I had an EM10 mk1 which was quite bad with reds, especially flowers.

I'm very conscious of the 'bold' colours that a lot of cameras produce, and I'm not really a fan. I now always use the Olympus cameras on the 'muted' profile and I see that as acceptable. It also means I can use video straight from the camera on most occasions. I think Olympus colours have improved over time and I wouldn't consider reds a weak point. Thanks for watching!
