Thanks so much Joseph. Can't find a readable book on the M1X so your video is the next best option. Yours has been more helpful than any I've seen so far.

Excellent and really useful information! The EM1X is a great tool but it requires getting use to as it is so highly adaptable to personal shooting requirements and taste. I found your suggestions for customisation were well thought out and deserve serious consideration. Thanks!

Brilliant Joseph, just going to grab my EM1X and do a few changes to the menus. I shoot mainly landscapes and bird photography. Thanks

I love the physical 1-2 switch as you can set up different custom button settings for both positions. My 1 is normal shooting (no back button focus), 2 is manual shooting (with back button focus). I can easily feel with my thumb to switch it without removing my eye from the viewfinder.

I found somehtng new ... Linked orientation - very useful ... That manual clutch tripped me ONCE, when I unpacked my mk2 I thought "Oh NO, it's faulty" - a second later, the light came on. Great explanation and justification of all your choices - your settings are of course not all for all of us, but the knowledge is handy. As an aside, your voice, tone and mannerisms remind me of Christopher Walz without the accent. That's not a bad thing :) Subscribed.

Great video, Joseph. Thank you for keeping the duration to 25 minutes (there is so much more to say...). One comment : instead of the "punch joystick" setup in order to return the focus point to the Home Position, you can also press and hold the OK button for the same purpose (info from Tony Phillips in his book, on the E-M1 mark ii ; Friedman Archive press).

The EVF is much much better. That was the first thing I noticed. Live ND is also a neat feature (though probably not for weddings) and handheld Hi-Res is drop dead simple. Hadn't thought about using the lever for switching between C-AF and S-AF. Have to try that. I use the Custom Modes for that since other things (like Auto ISO) also change if it's movement versus a more static subject.

Informative and polite - and refreshingly free of schtick as always, Jo! Thanks. It's a great camera, isn't it? I love mine. One thing I have noticed from time to time - if you use the C1, C2 etc settings I have found that the camera will black out for around 5 seconds sometimes when you switch between the dial settings. This is alarming and decidedly non-pro: imagine if you are shooting on C1, which you have set for SAF Aperture and suddenly you spot (say) an Eagle approaching and hurriedly switch to C2 which you have set to CAF etc for just such an eventuality. Instead of the camera instantly being ready to go in the new mode, I found that often it just when black in the EVF and no button would work at all for 5 seconds or so. One to watch out for and if it is common, one I hope Olympus will fix in a firmware update ASAP!

Thank you, I'lll keep in mind, TBH I don't tent to use the C modes very much but that definitely sounds frustrating to say the least.

Thank you for your clear explanation. I recently got an Olympus E-m1x. When I use the C setting (1 to 4) and lock it with the c-lock function, this only works 1x. If I go back to another setting M or A and come back to C the c-lock lock no longer works and I have to select them all again first. What am I doing wrong?

Love my 1x. Though personally I'm not sure I would recommend it as an upgrade if you currently shoot 1 Mk2 (even though that's what I did). I'm not convinced it's a big enough step up to warrant it. As a wildlife shooter I have a slightly different set of customisations but the point is it can be tailored to both our needs at the drop of a hat. I would completely agree on the battery usage. It was probably the most annoying thing about the 1 Mk2 for me (having come from a D500 where a battery would last forever) and I'm noticing a step change in performance with the 1x. I'm away on a field trip early May which will properly test this. The other thing I notice is the improvement in auto focus both in speed and accuracy. This is most noticeable in flight shots and my keeper rate has improved a lot.

Is there a way to get to my menu quickly.....Without having going to the menu button, toggling to the star then making the choice? Thanks for this video and your setup. Good advice about function buttons too.
@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
By default the last menu used comes up so I’m usually already in the My Menu so that’s pretty quick but no there’s no quicker way I’m aware of at this point. How would you like to see it work?

Hi Joseph, thanks for the set up tutorial, i found it really helpful. I just upgraded from EM1 Mark 1 to the EM1X. i'm struggling to find if i can extend the playback time in the view finder immediately after i have taken a photo, so i get a few seconds preview of the image. presently i have to press the play button to view the image. On the EM1 it was not an issue. Is this something you could help me with? Thanks in advance.

Great video Joseph--thanks. Question: I shoot mostly birds with the EM1 Mk II. I like to use back button continuous auto focus. I recently learned that the camera will not re-focus between each shot in continuous high, but will in continuous low. If I continue to use back button focus, do you know if the camera will re-focus between shots in continuous low? Also, does the EM1 X behave in the same way? Your videos are really helpful.
@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
Yes in (L) at 10 fps both cameras will continuously refocus between each frame. The EM1X is the same as the EM1.2 in terms of drive speeds so both behave the same way. The main advantage of the X is just that it's a bit faster at tracking so you might have a few more keepers depending on your subject.
@alanwood55905 жыл бұрын
I agree with Joseph 100%. I've also used the EM1ii extensively for bird photography and my keeper rate for birds in flight has definitely gone up since I've been using the EM1X. Overall I love the EM1X for wildlife. For me the camera balances beautifully with the larger pro series lenses (300 f4 and 40-150 f2.8) and I really love the ergonomics with the built in grip affording more real estate for a better button layout. There's obviously a plethora of customisable options (it really pays to go through the full manual with this one) but one seemingly small but significant difference for me over the EM1ii is the ability when using a cluster of focus points to prioritise the centre point (intended to avoid the camera automatically focussing on the nearest point whether it's on the main subject or not).

He goes so fast, like how to get to my menu and then set things up in it...cool feature? How to do it. Similarly with most of the "tips" I think he needs to begin with a walk through of the camera and all of its buttons and their functions...if this is a set up tutorial, then one has to know what is there to set up. So I live my M1X, but really am "shooting from the hip" because the details are arcane and I can't find information/instructions about how to use them.
