Hi. You can mix the Zeiss cleaning fluid yourself. 85% n-hexane and 15 isopropanol. Both are analyzer grade. Maybe it helps one or the other. Your video has helped me a lot.

excellent! liked and subscribed. my only hesitation would be how dry you can get the prism with just wiping with the paper towel...
@TheGizmoGarage Жыл бұрын
You can’t wipe anything off with paper towels, it must be hard scrubbing and sometimes with sharp objects to remove stubborn stuck on damaged prism coating

Do not clean the focus screen with a swab! the meter needle can be damaged. just remove the focus screen from the lens mount side.

I have an Olympus OM-1 that hasn't been touched in over 10+ years...I have never even attempted taking apart or cleaning a camera. Is this something a beginner can do without fear of damaging the camera? Your video is great and makes me feel like I might have a chance at cleaning this.
@TheGizmoGarage2 жыл бұрын
My advice is if you have not ever disassembled something before, I would suggest sending it to a Olympus film camera repair specialist to do the job
@thijskennis87572 жыл бұрын
I went the dumb way and just tried it myself and it was surprisingly easy! However there were a few shaky moments. If you're dependent on the camera, send it off. If it's a hobby item, is just go for it. 😁

Great presentation. Wondering if it is worthwhile examining my beloved OM-1 which jumped out of a defective backpack on a mountain hike (it would have been safer hanging around my neck!); it had been a reliable camera for about 20+ years since the mid-1970s. Likely there is some interior damage even though the camera was in one piece (the aftermarket zoom died - but I have the original Zuiko 50mm somewhere!)

Would be a hefty task... Might just be easier to dry fire a few times and check shutter speed accuracy as well as the light meter. Rewind a few times to see if it would turn without any noise and shake it a bit to hear if there are some lose pieces... If something doesn't check out, then it might just be worth a while to get a replacement unit.

Awesome clear to follow & understand video ! Why did they put the foam there in the first place ?

to prevent light scatter and reflection in viewfinder and to reduce shock vibration I think

Merci pour votre réponse ! There's a german brand called Molotow, they make a "liquid chrome with a miror effect" in pencils, I might try that on a prism, remove it if it doesn't work. Regards

Hi! Cool video which will come in handy as I am buying a couple of PMs :) thanks for sharing! Is the prism the same across all the OM series (from 1 to 4)? The missing black bit on the prism that creates the artefact, is it possible to cover this exposed part of the prism with something black? (gaffer tape came to mind). Thank you!
@UltraSteaKME2 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering this too... but perhaps the glue of a tape might lead to some other artifacts. Why not a gentle layer of water based paint?

Shutter issues require specific fix for specific camera models, you might want to watch a few more F2 disassembly video and shutter repair video before tackling the issue. Good luck!

Hello from France ! Have you try to repaint the prism with black paint ? I have the same issue here with a OM-2n...
@TheGizmoGarage2 жыл бұрын
Bonjour, once the damaged silver prism covering is removed you really don’t have to do anything, the coating is black but a reflective silver on the other side. Not sure what will happen if you paint it but all prisms I have restored with exposed glass all works fairly fine with just a small thin line visible in viewfinder of the damaged area
@danc20143 ай бұрын
the glass is silver coated then pained black for protection similar to home mirrors.
@HowlingWolves772 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Awesome video! I just have a question about cleaning the pentaprism with a toothbrush... what did you do? Did you brush the side down where the paint was peeling? How hard and how much did you brush it? Thanks!!
@TheGizmoGarage2 жыл бұрын
The coating was pretty hard material. I brushed the general area concentrating on deterioration, and had to use a sharp pointy tweezer to remove bad coating until tweezer can no longer scratch any more coating off. Put prism back on top of camera and preview, if you did a good job the deterioration will be barely visible

7:40 the incredible hulk must have screwed this washer back on because it took my whole body just to get this loose. I even managed to take a massive chunk of metal out of the holes
@TheGizmoGarage Жыл бұрын
sometimes it does get stuck due to age, you can try to drip a few drops of 70%-95% alcohol under the washer to dissolve the gunk a bit, might be easier next time.
@JeffDvrx11 ай бұрын
Putting a plastic piece directly underneath the cap on the advance lever was such a dick move from Olympus... The holes in the cap are big enough that the pin points on a spanner wrench will stab the plastic piece under it if you apply pressure to it, which you will 100% do in order to get the best possible grip if the cap is stuck in place. Glad I realized it before I actually broke the plastic. It bugs me to no end when stuff like this happens. Now I need to buy a couple screwdrivers and give them the dremel treatment so I have two bespoke, pointless pins to add to my collection just for this fucking cap lol. Oh well.

The plastic piece is a cheap washer to ensure smooth lever movement but yeah

Why didn't you just stick some *black* *tape* over the spot eaten by the foam?

@@TheGizmoGarage How is the black tape different to black coating?
@danc2014 Жыл бұрын
The silver coating provide the bright image reflectivity in the prism, the black coating protects the silver Tape is bad because someone might try to remove it and peal the silver plus it may damage the coating like the foam you just removed.
