I have a few pieces still - I would likely go for glass designed for the system. Seems counter productive to put big heavy lenses on the smaller body (a nice option to have though)

That's what I wanted to mention as well. The only thing which the GH3 lacks in the video specs compared to the E-M1 is the 5-axis IBIS to work on all lenses. In every other video specs, it excells the E-M1 by far (it has Mic and headphone jack).

AFAIK, the stabilisation does not work for video yet out-of-the-box, and the video options definitely has it trailing behind the GH3 in terms of framerates and codecs. That being said, with focus peaking, a sensor capable of both contrast and phase detection (bringing back into play the venerable line of Oly's 4/3 lenses) and the aforementioned 5-axis stabilisation, I think there's enough here to set it apart from the GH3. Just my two cents.

Great and very exciting announcement indeed. Thank you for that. I was thinking about buying a Sony-System but now the switch could be initiated. What i allways loved is the classical simple look of the OMs, beside the technical factor.

I have a similar history to you Matt. I love Oly equipment, started with a Trip 35 in 1977 then OM1 in 78 followed by OM2, OM4Ti's, C2040, C5050, then dropped film & went fully digital with an E1 then E3. I was disappointed with E5 and went NIkon route investing heavily with a D700 then D800 and various Nikkors. But, I have all my Zuiko glass and I am also very excited about this camera. I don't care about video at all & ordered one last week with the 12-14 & 4/3 adapter. I can't wait to get it.

In my opinion, there's little difference between this body and the Lumix GH3, and the GH3 came out about 9 months ago so it's taken Olympus a while to respond. I do like the inclusion of 5-axle sensor for stabilisation on the E-M1 which is better for video and it will be interesting to compare the video performance on both models. The new Lumix X pro lenses are f2.8. I feel that both these models are very close to each other now, and the pricing reflects that for both.

I remember reading a while back about a collaboration being negotiated between Olympus and Sony.. The CDAF and PDAF dual-AF on-sensor function sounds like something they got from using Sony sensors..

The EM5 is a fantastic camera and I most certainly will be picking one up now with the price drop. I will use it as a second body. - I personally was just expecting more from a $1400 camera and the high standard that the EM5 set before it... I was hoping and expecting that "tremendous leap forward" but I don't feel like this is it.
@GatorheadLuis11 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt... for $1400... A few would be 1.) More video options (24/60 fps) 2.) Dual SD card slots 3.) Fully articulating LCD 4.) Focus peaking in video mode. - Camera looks good but not the home run I was expecting... However I can't wait to get a lower priced EM5 to back up my GH3. Keep posting, your doing a great job.

I've seen a few more reviews now and the E-M1 does a few hardware improvements over the previous flagship model, including new chip and sensor, focus peeking (electronic lenses only!) and only for stills work and lack of low pass filter (watch out for moire in video though) make this model very good. However, the GH3 is much better for video work (headphone input, full 1080p, intraframe, slow mo). I'd like to see a stills comparison under the same conditions between the E-M1 and the GH3.

I played around with the new Oly EP5 the other day and it is really nice, and in some respects I think the black and silver one even look better than the OMD, and it's allot less money than the new EM1, but still has improved 5 axis IS and 8000 shutter, but not weather sealed, also the fuji XE1s is around the corner from coming out, and will be like an x100s with interchangeable lenses, and Sony is a few weeks away from releasing a new Nex and a FF nex, but the Em1 still might be my next camera

Matt. Just get one. Think of how much better it will be for travel vlogs, all nice and compact. You can justify it.

I would love to have a mirrorless to go along with my DSLR.This set of gear looks nice, but I would have to strongly consider the nex line as well. The major issue for me,is that I am a college student and the price points equal books and food. lol

This is a camera probably prohibiting my brand switch... Currently own a Oly E-620 and was going pregnant with the idea of switching to Nikon 7100 some-when the next months... Let's the dust settle a little bit on the E-M1 and see if it's worth staying Olympus and smoothly go from FT to MFT with the E-M1 body.

Matt, if (when) you get this EM-1, you should get the 4/3 35-100 f/2. I heard that is GREAT glass. Pricey though :/
@robrero7411 жыл бұрын
Great video Matt! As an E-M5 owner, I can't help but get a little G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). However, I see the E-M1 as a direct successor to the Oly E-5 4/3 DSLR and not the E-M5.

Seriously thinking about this thing. I was kinda-sorta thinking of going mirrorless, but I'm being held back by my "arsenal" (not really) of Canon gear. I'll have to sell all that and basically start over (I don't have the money to maintain two sets, but I do for only one). I currently own a 550D. The autofocus. Oh god the autofocus. It's a mess. And ISO-performance is *slightly* better then my phone. But the main problem I'm having is weight, since I only thoroughly use my gear on holidays.
@212lohs11 жыл бұрын
I would like to think Sony has on par or even better optics with their G Glass and their Zeiss Glass. Since Sony has provided Olympus with their LCD/EVF tech, it's only reasonable that Olympus does the same with their IBIS!
@212lohs11 жыл бұрын
Matt, if you were an Olympus shooter then don't you have some old Olympus glass? I wish my Nex had the 5-axis IBIS (would be great using my old manual glass), maybe when they announce their refresh they'll have it since Sony and Olympus are now partners.
@jshaw660011 жыл бұрын
I'm a GH3 shooter as well and it definitely is still better for video. Hell, even the GH2 is better for video. Olympus don't seem to understand how much people want decent video specs on their cameras, espcially when combined with focus peaking and ibis. Hopefully, one day.

If I had the money I would definitly buy one :-)
@GetOutsideYourself11 жыл бұрын
I can TELL you were excited here! So how could a heavily-invested DSLR shooter justify this acquisition? What can it do that your D800 or 1DX can't? BTW, you know Sony bought a large share of Olympus, right? We're all hoping some of their tech (IBIS + optics) finds its way to the Sony lineup.

Hey Matt :) the af, Screen and Features on the e-5 are great, but for me the iso Performance isnt that great... I shoot x100s only (for digital) but my dad owns a OMD, so had had the Chance to Test it :) but switching from fuji? No, Because the Fujis are just lovely cameras :)
@GatorheadLuis11 жыл бұрын
Feel like it's over rated/over hyped. - I'll be looking to pickup a EM5 now if I can find one at around $800 to complement my GH3. - Olympus keeps overlooking video features... Very disappointing. - I believe $1400 is too much for what you are being offered with this camera. I love micro four thirds but I was expecting something more from a camera priced this high... The new lens they announced though (12-40mm 2.8) looks like a home run, awesome lens.

An EM-1 with the 12-40mm is half the size half the weight and a roughly a third the price of a Nikon D800 with a 24-70mm. Of course it won't have the same image quality but it's good enough 95% of the time. Even for a professional like Matt. And less weight on his neck the whole day can be a good thing.
@angelisone11 жыл бұрын
Matt, many people can read from the ad or from the internet. Why not hold up the real thing? It's an overpriced 50% reduction camera systems. You paid for what seems to be a 100% optics only to get 50% of optics. But you and Olympus are fooling people by saying a crop factors. Can not manually set your AF, camera does it automatically in Phase or Contrast. ISO is only 200, who care for high ISO. Park a flash is the solution. No wireless or tethered shooting & live-view to a pc like E-5.
