Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II - Back Button Focusing with Gavin Hoey

Olympus Ambassador Gavin Hoey shows you how to set up Back Button Focusing on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. The Back Button Focus feature allows you to separate the firing and focusing functions onto two separate buttons, and with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II you can assign these functions to whichever buttons you choose.

If anyone else wants to know the easiest way to turn off back button focussing I have NOT found it. So I have done a full reset of custom modes. Now I have to put all my custom modes back in. Would be great if it was as easy to find this out as it is to actually set back button focussing in the first place.

Hi Gavin, Could you give us an impression of the situations in which you use 'backbutton focusing' or/and why you use or prefer bbf.

It was especially useful on DSLRs, where there is no face (and eye) detection. You locked the focus with a center AF target moved to the eye, recompose the picture for the portrait and shoot many times easily, as the shutter button does not re-focus. On a MILC with good eye detection AF system, it is not so important, but it is still often a good idea to separate AF and shutter, because it results much faster response time, as there is no need to wait for AF.

Thank you Gavin! Sometimes the Olympus logic isn't logic to me, and this is one of those times. To me, it would have been logical to put this setting under "Button Function", but I guess the AEL/AFL button isn't a button in the Olympus world 🙄

So how do I lock exposure when I use back button focus as in focus once and take a panorama? With this method the exposure would change with every shutter press. I want to be able to focus once and then use the Brenizer method to take multiple pictures of a subject in shallow DOF without any difference in exposure setting value.

very irritating and tricky. Took me an hour to work it out. In AEL/AFL make half way AF inoperable and select Mode 3. Seems to take a few goes to bed in- no idea why. I made my focus button the record button as I rarely use it.

Can you use BBF with Pro Capture Low C-AF for indoor sports?
