I was about to buy the new OM1, since its price is on promotion with a reduction of about 200$. Then, after seeing your review, I decided not to buy it. I know that there are are some die hard Olympus fans that will object to your tests, feeling like you just rained in the parade, but I personally see that your expositions don't fall into the abyss of infomercials, as is the fashion nowadays. The OM-1 mainly seems to have about one half to one stop more exposure depending on where you’re shooting. That would account for the better exposure on the face. It also seems to give more dynamic range, but I’m not sure that’s what’s happening. The skies are blown out. The new sensor, according to more tech testing, appears to have no more than about a half stop more dynamic range, which is almost too small to make a difference in uncontrolled shooting conditions.The color difference I’m mainly seeing is the OM-1 is more magenta to red, particularly indoors, mostly red/cyan there. I realize how difficult it is to do these tests. I’ve come to appreciate the work you put in.

I sold my OLY Mark 11 to get the OM1 and so far I think it's one of the best Cameras I've ever owned and yes my arsenal includes the A7S3 and the GH5! Yes it's a camera made primarily for photographers but the video quality is amazing and I love to use my Laowa 7.5 with it cause everything is in focus. Also did you update to the new Firmware?

Where did you get that idea? They promoted it as a great video camera with (finally) HLG and 10 bit! And both don't work! Every shot starts and ends with a freeze frame. Wich gives you a couple of hours extra work to removing the first and last frame.

The colors on the E-M1 III look better in your comparison shots. The OM1 seems to do better with dynamic range. The color science change is probably due to the new sensor. One more video to prove I do not need to dump close to 3k into the OM1, new batteries, a new battery grip to replace my E-M1 III. If I need a second body, I will still get the E-M1 III over the OM1.

If memory serves, in Olympus cameras it was better to reduce the AF sensitivity, and increase the AF speed. Did you test that as well?

Love the channel. I have had the OM1for several months, but I had the em1 markii before. I take mostly pictures. I have been thrilled with the OM1. The Dynamic Range is far superior then my markii. I don't don't know how to quantify it; I just know the details I can pull in editing are amazing. I'm very hard to please on big ticket purchases, but haven't regretted the om1 purchase one bit. Biggest pluses are Dynamic Range, Battery life and image quality. The autofocus meets my needs as well. I do like my camera' photo's color, but that is just preference.

I have both cameras. Here's what I noticed: Stills: The Mk iii focuses faster than both of my OM-1's. It seems like the OM-1 must go through its entire focus range to focus; while the Mk iii goes right into focus. Seems like the OM-1 is not using Phase Detect AF -- which is supposed to _know_ which direction to go to get focus. (Side note: I upgraded too quickly to OM-1 FW v1.6. My 2nd OM-1 body, used, came with v1.4 and I _thought_ focus was better with v1.4. Can anyone confirm this?) For the Video time-to-focus: There is a setting for this! You get normal, slow & fast settings. The HHHR keeps improving with every iteration. (I have no OM-1 Mk ii) Did you know that the Mk iii can toggle between Raw & JPEG; but the OM-1 cannot? The OM-1, has the same function, but the OM-1 function just sends you into RAW -- no toggle back to JPEG.

Even the OM1 manual explains that you cannot save "video settings" to the Custom Settings, in fact the manual uses the same text as in the original EM1 Mark III manual in regard to the Custom Settings dial.

Yup. I have them both. And you are 100% correct. The 10 bit video is great looking. the OM1 autofocus needs a firmware tweak for sure. The one thing that works best for me on the OM-1 is to tap the screen and it gives you a rectangular green box. That is where the autofocus will concentrate. That works quite well. But, there is no question this needs a firmware update.

Thank you! I really enjoy your videos! I got the om1 recently and I think they still have to give us another af update. The poroblem is how the focus modes in the camera are "managing phase (pd) and contrast detection (cd)", the area of the focus points decreased quite a bit in relation to the previous model and omsystems will have to optimize how the focus uses cf, pd and manages multiple focus points. Firmware 1.3 improved c-af very significantly, it still needs some twiching to increase consistency, but it's just a matter of firmware, once it is optimized it will be absolutelly amazing. It is already a very big improvement from the mkii but needs fine tunning. The main things I don't like in the om1 are: 1 the fact that I was so familiar with the menu system that relearning and finding again some of the "hidden" things has been a challenge; 1 I can't switch of the super control pannel I like to be able to change parameters and see the changes in real time, the SCP slows me down most of the time...; 2 they dumbed down some of the menus, I like the aditional options we got for some adjusments (e.g. the display adjustments for photography in em1-now we have a night vision that is not on par with the enhanced screen/viewfinder light modes - i'm not dure if they still exist inder a different menu/name); 3 the fact that I can't (maybe I don't know how to do it yet) change the function in the buttons on the on/off switch; and 4 the fact that the camera does not come with a charger (that costs over $170 and is basically a battery mount since you still have to use the transformer that comes with the camera...). This comes from that sony "customer sodomy philosophy" supported by their minion bloggers that have the nerve to say they love to charge theitlr batteries in their cameras... Seriously, how many connect/disconnect cycles until the usb-c plug dies, or the whole camera and a lens die because someone trips on the cable? Well, 3rd party $30 "charger" it is...

The AF speed is something you adjust, the preset is slow, maybe they think it’s cinematic :) Maybe he will find this in the menu later on 👌 it can be very fast.

I made the same mistake. Autofocus needs to be +1 and +1, both settings. The only thing using the custom settings for is if you set it up for solomo.

Well the mark III has a sensor from 2018 so thats 4yrs or tweaking firmware and other parameters, OM-1 will probably get better with time but thats still disappointing that they released sth like that.

I don't know man... The skin tones on the EM1 III look better to me. On the OM1, you look sunburnt. The EM1 III highlights from lamp and even the color of the sky also look better to me. Clips from the OM1 look more saturated, the tonality isn't as pleasing, and everything looks less cinematic. I am a bit disappointed. I hope that Olympus will improve the OM1 AF with a firmware update, and that CineMatch will add support for it. Then I will be tempted to buy it.

I'm disapointed that you didn't manage a backflip off that wall in flip flops though. Keep up with the good content. Was that a Freudian slip though at 12:49 when you mented the EM1.2?

The OM-1 appears to have far better dynamic range than the EM-1 M III. The thing has 7 custom settings, there must be a way to set some for video. Clearly you're doing something wrong, like not reading the manual. Stabilization looks decent. The user interface is definitely clunky. AF is disappointing. This is supposed to be a photo-first camera, though. Are you ever gonna try the GH-6, just for sh*ts and giggles? We know about the AF. Everything else seems great from what I've seen.

Definitely sticking with my EM1-3. The only thing I don't like about it is the way colors look in slow-mo, and the quality of the 240p on the OM1 isn't enough for me to justify upgrading. Looks like I'll be getting the GH6 whenever it comes time.

I have had my Olympus EM1 Mk 2 (latest firmware) for over two years now and with all MSC-designated Olympus lenses the AF almost always works perfectly in video, no pulsing, no pumping or hunting for the subject unless the brightness is too low, or the subject moves very fast. Something may have been wrong with either your OM-1 or the lens (maybe some sort of defects in the lens?)

It's a firmware update thing for sure it's a result of how the camera is using/switching between contrast detect and phase detect focus. For example I found that c-af is much faster and acurate than s-af, and much faster than em1 mkii, in any light situation even for single point focus. It's just a matter of optimizing the camera focus... (the area of a single point is much smaller now, contrast detection struggles a bit, the camera should use phase detection to speed things up and add contrast detection for better precision in the end)

Those colours on the OM1 don't look good. Skin tones particularly. Also, in the 10-bit, it was (assumedly) because of KZbin compression, but the light behind you showed banding artifacts, whereas the EM1 falloff was smooth.

More professional looking image more 3D pop it kinda looks full frame and colours look really good. Knowing your videos it'll be interesting to see if more time fiddling with focus sensitivity and speed brings it back to EM1-3 good or better.

Goto the menu in the OM-1 custom menu, select G. Then look for Keep warm color, and see if it's on if so, then turn it off. That warm/greenesh look is normally what it looks like on my em1 mii when this feature is on. Maybe it's the same for OM-1.

I really expected more from the OM1. It has a stacked sensor, smaller than full frame but the read out is slower, just wtf. But even with that read out they should have been able to do more, like 1440p 120fps, 4:3 video, sub 1080p insane framerate like 480 fps?

It's likely that it's slower because it's reading out all the subpixels as well for the AF.

One of the best camera comparison videos I've seen in general well done. I've been a Nikon shooter for 10 years, but I'm getting tired of the large lenses and bodies, the new Z8 is pretty awesome, but I feel like I want something smaller than my Z6ii not larger, but certainly better not worse... My biggest gripe with Z6ii is auto-focusing my older D750 is like 10x better... Except in video they are both bad, but Z6ii is better... So if not the OM-1, what would you recommend that has good auto-focus, good video, good button layout and good size for travel? I just started exploring the Micro 4/3 ideas...

Your issues are with setup. First your auto focus sensitively isn’t set up correctly. You also need to set your video manual mode. The reason it jumps back to program is you have the default set that way. Also store the settings that you change often in the My menu.

It's the same as the EM1 settings which worked perfectly. You can't save video exposure modes to a custom dial, show me how?

@@cameraconspiracies But it's not the same camera, some menu items are similar, but the zillion point AF behaves quite differently. Having come from the E-M1 II/III, in respect to AF, it's just not a tweaked update, my old settings just don't blindly carry over. And, yes, for a start, experiment with the sensitivity.
