quite the OM collection you have, jealous! Got the om4ti and om10 and love them both.

Nice and comprehensive review. I've had a few negative experiences with OM-4s but never a bad ti. I'd say plump in the higher money to get a ti (for people who might be looking) -- also worth checking that it has a 2 series focussing screen (which is really an essential upgrade if you have 2.8 lenses). Glad you mentioned it (many do not). One tip is that you can cut out and extract the "lumibrite" focusing screens from an OM-PC/OM-40 if you can't find the 2-13. It's essentially a 2-13 minus the tab. I'm of two minds on whether I'd rush into my burning house to grab the OM-4ti or the OM-1n and OM-2n though. Maybe I'll just leave them all in the same bag just in case.

Always wanted one of these, but a bit out of my price range. I'm happy with my Om2n though.

Yep, OM2N is a fantastic camera and in my opinion it has a much smoother wind on than the rather "ratchety" wind on of the 4Ti. If you don't need or want the fancy multi spot metering of the 4Ti then I reckon the OM2N is probably the better camera!

I am of the opinion that you put together a very good overview of the OM series. If you did not go into detail about what spot metering is, this is not a sin since this was not the focus of the video IMHO. I would add however, that where even today's modern matrix metering systems are excellent, they can still be fooled by a strongly back-lit subject. This is why I have a function button on my Nikon D3s programmed to momentarily switch to spot metering when the situation calls for it without wasting time to switch modes on the fly. Works like a champ. My opinion is that the OM-4T/Ti is the best implementation of spot metering ever devised (at least of the spot metering systems I have used) because of its flexibility and straight forward implementation. While my Canon T90 and Rolleiflex 6008 both have spot metering they are not as intuitive as this is. I recently acquired an Olympus M-1 which was the original OM-1 launched in late 1971/early 1972, and showcased at Photokina in Germany in 1972. Leica objected to the model naming since it would conflict with their rangefinder line already in the marketplace. Olympus modified the rest on the "OM-1's" in production to use the new name. This original OM-1 has to be one of the smoothest cameras I have even used. It, along with the rest of this product line just illustrates what bloody genius Miatani-sama of Olympus really was. Very impressive designs. Cheers.

So true, the wind on on the om1/2 series of cameras has to be the smoothest ever!

3:00 FYI - I have three OM-4s (one became parts only). The highest serial numbered of the three does not have the battery drain problem (but it does have a tilted hot shoe 😞), so the problem must have been rectified during the 4's lifetime.

The first eight minutes were no more than telling the history of OM System development starting from OM-1 back in 1972 and ending up by last year 2002 when Olympus stopped manufacturing the 35 mm film cameras, entirely.

I have always loved Oly OM system......at one time I had an OM4Ti in each colour.......the spot metering is still the finest ever produced copied by Canon D1X ...I think !

The om1 & om2n had off switches. Where is the off switch on the om4ti to save batteries.

If you turn the shutter speed dial round until it is at the red "1/60" or "B" setting this disengages the electrics on the camera thus saving battery power. Don't forget to depress the small button close to the flash PC socket in order to be able to move the shutter to the 1/60 or B setting.

I believed that the Ti was for being the titanium shutter
@bigwill4423

No, the shutter is cloth. The camera top and bottom plates are made of titanium. I believe Nikon made a 35mm SLR with a titanium shutter but not Olympus.

@@bigwill4423 Interestingly enough I'm pretty sure Olympus DID make a titanium shutter 35mm SLR, in the form of the Pen F series, with a rotary shutter

You miss out on the important things. Every camera has what you explained and the spot metering was NOT explained. Try again but don't be so general.

Sorry Dennis. I'm not an expert by any means and can only give my view from the perspective of an enthusiastic amateur owner. My apologies for this but it is what it is. William

Not sure about the differences you refer to when comparing the 4 & Ti. I've owned both, still have the Ti. As far as i recall, the only difference between the two was the circuit board, which was changed on last production 4's (hence the bloody battery drain) and also the Titanium top & bottom plate. Other than that, i don't seem to remember any other difference, though my memory may be playing tricks on. Anyway, nice to see another fan of these legendary OM's.
