Thank you for your kind comments. Having run 250 photographic holidays, from which I have now retired, I understand the importance of giving beginners clear advice without gobbledegook or presumed knowledge. I am not afraid to do this because it is one thing to explain something but a totally different matter for someone to carry it out and I cannot help with the finer points of that operation. That is where inspiration enters the argument. Happy Christmas, by the way.

I just bought the 12-42 pancake for my aging Pen F. I see it as my travel and everyday family cam. I will be hiking and shooting the Pancake for the first time today. Then this coming July 4th parade I will shoot the combo to cover those events. So far I really like the quick focusing but have no idea what to expect for image quality. Other than people say it does good at that.

This was a great video! I’m always amazed at your expertise never minding the equipment! I took your advice when I purchased the EMI MII and the 12-100 lens which is a perfect combo. While I am awaiting delivery of my Pen F with 17mm, your video reminded me that I have forgotten my 14-42mm lens which I will now use with the Pen! I practice every day in the hope that I may one day get an image that looks similar to yours. One day...

A great video. Nice to visit London (while in the USA ) :) I especially liked the photos from the bridge looking out over the river to “older” London and “newer” London. You can have the best camera in the world, but without the ability to “see a great photograph”, you will just be capturing pictures. Happy New Year Derek!

Hi Derek, after my Sony Bridge camera, I purchased the Olympus OM-D 10M2 with the normal kit 14-42 lens and added the 40-150 kit lens. I am quite impressed with picture quality even though I do not have any Pro lenses, but I do use Olympus film lenses with a manual adapter also with taking great photos. The camera built itself I love as going from film to digital with the form factor feels good from the first time of use. The only thing I found wanting is a better menu system that is easier to use and understand. Since Then I was so impressed with the OM-D 10 I purchased the Olympus OM-D 1 M1 but find my preference is still with the OM-D 10M2.Compared to full frame cameras the Olympus OM-D cameras meets my need in a smaller size, advanced features and a affordable price.

When Olympus launched the E-1 in 2003 they said it was a digital camera, not film. It was designed from a blank sheet of paper and therefore did not pander to film photography. I have never understood the advantages of full frame cameras and indeed full frame photographers have told me me that there are certain things I cannot do with M43 which are patently untrue, such as large prints, a shallow depth-of-field and certainly not good enough for publications. Some of these techniques still require a traditional knowledge even in a digital age, which I do not think they possess. Interesting to note that you use film lenses on your digital camera. Back in 2003 Olympus again were at pains to point out that the technology of a digital lens is different to film, such as the distribution of light from the lens to the sensor, resulting in a loss of quality at full aperture.

Hi Derek, another great video, with brilliant images! THis again teaches me two things: it is the photographer, not the equipment that makes the image I am still a snapshot maker, not a photographer, and my skills need improvement Besides, I look forward to the time when it is possible to travel freely and see the UK, and many beautiful place of the world again! BR Erwin.

At the moment (in the UK) you can buy a used E-M1 (mark I) for the same price as a used E-M10 mk II. Having bought both over the past year as "lockdown projects" (the E-M10 mk II I bought was actually under £100 and non-working when I got it, the E-M 1 mk I under £180 and supposedly well worse than average condition), I await this video with interest......

Thank you, I find your comments most interesting. I give a guide price in the programme of between £600 & £700 assuming that if anyone is interested they will go for a Mark 4 with lens. Hope the programme comes up to your expectations. I publish a new programme each Friday, this week it is a day early because of Christmas.

@@DerekForss Ah, I was also lucky enough to pick up a second-hand but unused E-M10 mk IV body a couple of months ago for £450; the typical selling price, new, is IMHO ludicrously high at the moment. It is slightly better in image quality IMHO compared to the Mk II but I'd say that at the moment the price premium is too much. Still recon that the Mk II is better than the Mk IV although I need to add the ECG3 grip to the Mk II for it to be comfortable in my hands whereas the Mk IV is OK as it is, and you can't fit a grip to it because of the way the screen drops right down. Also the loss of "MySets" in the Mk IV is a bit of a blow, wonder if they can and will be introduced with a firmware update?

Very nice images, were they out of camera jpeg or raw that you played with? I frequently expose to the right, but not enough to blow out the highlights, on Canon equipment, that keeps the shadow noise down when I'm done. But dark shadows work just as well. I hope the new incarnation of Olympus puts out an updated Pen F and continues the line with success. Perhaps a slimmed down management team and some manufacturing efficiencies will make it tenable. One wonders how it would be had they not had that giant financial scandal that bled them so badly for so many years prior to discovery. Best wishes!
@DerekForss3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comments about my E-M10 programme. I'm afraid that I don't follow everyone else, I go my own way by exposing everything to the left! You are right, you have to be careful about noise. This can be critical with an image having a high dynamic range such as a bright stained glass window in a much darker church. Exposing to the right will overexpose the window so much that it is beyond redemption in Photoshop. All the images in the programme are saved to RAW and adjusted in Lightroom. I am not a lover of HDR by the way. I am in regular contact with Olympus and they are busy sorting themselves out. I too hope they will update the PEN-F, something that appeared to be off the timetable under Olympus. You may find my website of interest - www.derekforss.com. Thank you for getting in contact.

I was offered the choice of an em10 mk2 new from Olympus with kit zoom for £34
@carmenfissenden25304 жыл бұрын
...£350 with two and half years warranty . I could also taken the em1 mk2 for just over £1000 with a free pro lens. Tempted I was, but my goal was a light companion and so, I chose the smaller camera and added a Billingham digital camera bag. This will allow for up to two small lenses or one sightly larger zoom. I have not been disappointed and I have received glowing praise for my photos when showing them. The point I am making is that this little consumer product can return far more than one might think at first glance . Sure, newer models can offer so much, but few of us need or want more than the processing power this camera offers. Derek, you made a very good video on the merits of this camera and it should deliver many good pictures in the years to come. The easier it is to take a camera out, so the more pictures it will take, and so the skill of the user. I also make at least one camera book each year, which means I am picky about my images that I share. Thank Derek for another very informative video .

Thank you, seems that you have a happy knack of picking up a bargain. You are correct about its size. You are more likely to take the E-M10 as apposed to a larger camera and pop it into your pocket just in case. Good luck with your books, I have done a few on Blurb. Many thanks and Happy Christmas.

... and the conclusion is? For everything but photographing moving subjects, the E-M10 mk II as almost as good as the E-M 1 ??
@DerekForss4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn’t feature movement, maybe one day? As my forte is landscape and architecture they don’t move very much, but sometimes the lighting that can make a shot does! So the camera’s ability to record movement is hidden away somewhere in the shots. Best wishes and a (hopefully) Happy New Year.

@@DerekForss It wasn't a criticism that you hadn't tested the mk IV on moving targets ! It would be interesting though to find out just how the "new improved focussing algorithms" help with attaining focus. Most of my subjects don't move, either, thank goodness. It's been a hard enough year without having to watch for buildings that may jump out in front of us.....
