Olympus Stylus Epic Worth the Money??? (MJU ii)

The Olympus Stylus Epic is highly regarded for it's size, the ability to have a camera with a 35mm lens alongside a flash completely blew away the photography world when it first came out! I've heard stories about wedding photographers keeping a stylus epic in their pockets for quick and spontaneous shots, landscape photographers leaving their gear back at the base f the mountain and of course street photographers taking advantage of its size and lugging it everywhere. Fast forward to 2018 and the dormant art of film has risen and the rave for olympus stylus epic picked up where it left off demanding a PREMIUM price in todays market. Is the stylus epic worth the money?

KingJvpes I like the images from the mju 1 one more & I've noticed that they have been going up in price. Though the mju 1 has focus issues it has a much more contrasty & punchier lens with slightly more pop. The mju 2 is sharper, better in low light & less contrasty bc of the more lens elements in it.

KingJvpes have you tried the infinity mini? It’s a hybrid between the two! Same lens as the stylus infinity, but weatherproof with a similar body design as the stylus epic! You should check it out sometime.

I've owned a MjuII from new. it's a nice camera but I prefer the XA series, especially the XA3. Since super compacts from Contax, Yashica, Fuji and Nikon went through the roof, prices have trickled down to the Olympus clamshells. There are lots of 35mm fixed lens compact cameras that offer good results for small change. I certainly wouldn't pay 250 for one, or even half that.

Great photos!!! The limited was better! Auto rewind is great. There were not a lot of auto rewind back in the day, if they were they were way bigger! Very sharp if u use the right film. Fuji film was good, Kodak was ok for auto shooting cameras. The best was AFGA and Black and White was the bomb. Those photos i had framed👍 For color pallet it depended where you got your photos developed and if the chemicals were changed out that day in the auto-developers. like at Walgreens🙂 I usually go to a smaller photo developer if it was for a wedding. Love my limited 😀👍

I had this camera back then and still have several rolls of Kodak Gold 200 with it. The pictures are just OK with many of them having a strange brownish hue. The camera exposure doesn't perform well in pictures with bright areas, poor indoor images with flash and objects more than 15 ft away. Overall, nothing to write home about these 2.8 Zuico lenses. Most of the time, landscape pictures are just ok and not that sharp, close ups in bright daylight are better with good saturation. The actual advantage of the camera is clearly its size - very pocketable - but this also has the disadvantage that the viewfinder is microscopic. I would say, worth perhaps around $50. You have plenty of other film cameras for under $20 off Ebay from early 2000's that perform much better but are also bulkier. The reason the Stylus is reaching now over $400 on Ebay (and climbing) is because of the 35mmc blog site that uploaded picture samples taken with the camera that have been heavily processed with Adobe Lightroom to the point of looking like SLR pictures.

When the battery dies in the MJU II/Epic 2.8 you put it in the MJU/Stylus Infinity and use it quite a while yet. Any of my cameras that use that battery are the same. I don't know why the Infinity runs so long after the others have died. I love both these cameras.

I bought that camera new back in the day, and it had cost exactly 250 German marks, about $200 today, meaning the price had gone up. That being said, you can find Olympus mju2 for less than $50 if you comb thru craigslists. One thing mju2 (Olympus Stylus Epic) was good for is for photographing concerts / performances under artificial light, given you are using that spot meter, something original camera would always overexpose. Unfortunately, that camera was stolen from me years ago, but I can still shoot with my wife's mju1 :-)

Do I think it might be the most brilliant little camera ever? Yes. Is it my favorite camera ever? No. That being said, I've decided to keep one because I do like to take it along for quick little grab shots, but I've sold 3 of them so far on eBay for 5-10x what I paid for them in thrifts. The last Epic I found was the Limited Edition, IOB, which I paid $35 for and sold for $400 to a buyer in Australia. Crazy.

I bought one of these new in 1999 or so right before I moved to Berlin. It is a fun camera, although a bit small for my hands, especially trying to press the shutter. Also, if I remember correctly, the flash activates as default and resets every time you open the camera. Does have a spot meter, if I recall...

No doubt the Stylus Epic has a great lens, but it is in no way worth $250. The lack of control is almost livable, but having to turn off the flash every single time you shoot kills it for that price. A couple of years ago before this thing got hyped up you could've easily picked one up for $30 online, and it was definitely worth it at that price. Nowadays though you could do better for the money. The Oly 35 ECR, Minox 35GT, Oly Infinity Stylus, and Oly XA are all better options for less money imho. Even if you're looking at that kind of cash I'd jump for a Rollei 35S before the Stylus Epic.

Just finished shooting a roll with my Epic and found this video. I liked your review and pretty much agree with everything you stated. It's a fun little camera, but from what I hear it really shines indoors and exposes with it's internal flash really well. If you still have a chance, shoot some portraits using the flash.

MJU II is one of the most overrated cameras out there imo. Got one a few years back and sold it a couple weeks later. Like Jvpes said, go for the infinity stylus if you wan't an auto point and shoot. Or go for the XA series, which are quieter, better build, sharper lens, cheaper and smaller than the MJU II

Like every Olympus camera of this type this is a good camera but this f2.8 aperture I think does not give her the right to be so expensive and we all know it but on ebay everything is too expensive otherwise! I own the Olympus AF-1Mini and it's a great camera, you can check it if you want. I honestly do not see any difference in the images between these two cameras, As far as focussing speed is concerned, it is the same for both. Build quality of the AF 1 mini is great and also is waterproof camera. I think this Stylus Epic is a really good camera but $ 250 is too much. AF 1Mini costs around 20 maybe. I am from Europe! Great channel!

Not tried the AF-1Mini, looking at it it's almost like a Mju I Infinity that takes AA batteries instead of CR123s. Edit: Apparently the same 3.5 lens, very similar specs. its main difference is the battery selection. This is good to know, I really like the Mju I for carrying, so this may help if it goes dodo.

I agree with your sentiment. I have a Mju II and I like it a lot: it has a great lens, great size and very accurate metering. I would however never spend 250$ on one mainly because there's no way to fix it once it breaks.. There're still a few great automatic P&S cameras that you can find for spare change like Fuji DL-200 (with a 32mm 2.8 lens and TTL metering), Ricoh FF-9 (35mm, 3.5 lens) and Canon Sure Shot AF35MII (35 mm 2.8 lens and a ridiculously loud motor drive) and I'd recommend all those over the Mju II simply because they are a lot cheaper. 250$ also is half of what a Konica Hexar AF costs which is arguably the best analog P&S of all time, so if you have money to burn go for that one instead. All that said, keep your eyes peeled when going to thrift stores or sifting through craigslist or whatever, there's still a slim chance you can find one.

I appreciate your images in this video are not altered and true to reality. Actually, all the craze with the Sylus Epic was created by misleading photographic blogs who publish HEAVILY processed images with Adobe Lightroom. Back in the days, no one would care for this camera more than for the competitors. Know what you are buying. Know that most images available on the internet blogs and sites like pbase.com or flickr are heavily embellished, "adjusted" as they call it, invoking various reasons for doing so. What is the point shooting film, then heavily modifying the image in Adobe ? May as well shoot with a good digital camera. On photo paper the Stylus Epic is not that impressive. Not that sharp (far less than those Lightroom tack sharp results), low contrast and saturation, metering can't cope with more complex scene lighting, plus you get a light brownish hue on most of the images. The point with these Stylus is they are compact for a 35mm, so it's easy to carry it around, that's why it sold so well back then. I think these Stylus are prized by photography hobbyists who actually are just having fun handling film canisters. A real 35mm picture is the one printed on paper, if one is searching for that nostalgic feeling. And for that purpose, the Stylus Epic is not worth it. A rangefinder or an SLR are more logical choices, and there are even some (bulkier) point & shoot cameras that produce much better pictures than the Stylus Epic.

The Mju2 is better in almost every way than the Mju1. Period. If you take cost away it is a much much better image making tool. Most of the shots I get from my Mju2 are as good if not better than a lot of my SLR images. That lens is SHARP and nice and contrasty. TBH I think your subject and the overcast day didnt make for the best test for this amazing little camera. Another area where the 2 shines over the 1 is with its autofocus. The mju2 is generally spot on where the mju1 misses focus a lot in my experience.

It missed focus on quite a few pictures, and I didnt find it sharper than the 1, also exposed wrong at times. I own the mju 1 too, perfect focus, exposure every time and also nicer to hold and shoot with. Got the 2 for a good price tho, so will sell it and make some money and keep the mju 1, prefer it over the 2!

I like the warmer images from the Stylus Infinity. But, the Epic is surprisingly sharp, and resolves a lot of detail. Too bad all the Epics will eventually produce light leaks through the lens barrel. How do you like the photos from the Epic compared to the L35AF?
@KingJvpes
@KingJvpes 6 жыл бұрын
Haha honestly, i think the l35af might be a little sharper, BUT form factor goes to the epic forsure. The l35 is like lugging around a brick! lol

Well done. While the size and lens on that camera are great features, the price point has gone way too high IMO. It sounds loud in the video, how does the winder sound compared to other compacts you've used? I've tried a handful of compacts the last few years and never found one I was very happy with. Earlier this week I dug out my original owner Minolta Freedom Zoom 150, threw in a new battery and it works just fine! I just put a roll of Superia 400 in today and plan to try this out. It is about 4.25" long, 2.25" tall and 1.5" deep.

Joe Lopez hey joe! The Minolta freedom zooms are some of my favorite point n shoots!! The freedom Zoom 115 date being my favorite. So cool to see you have one too! As for the sound, the shutter isn’t too bad BUT the rewind is pretty loud, but even then the stylus epics rewind is far from the loudest I’ve experienced. The L35AF is louder as well as the canon af35m

Bought my special edition in brand new condition for €150. But that's pretty expensive. That said, it's my go to camera so in my case it's definitely worth it.

Damn you are lucky! I’ve never had a true point and shoot. The closest thing for a point and shoot I have is either my Rollei or my XA which is always with me haha. Nevertheless I’d definitely stick to those two although I’d love to get an Infinity Stylus (mju 1)

What happens when you DO NOT load film and slide open the front? Mine flashes "E" and if I press shutter, the barrel sticks out, I hear the shutter sound, and then the barrel stays out. is this normal? just got the camera so I don't know if this is normal or not.

I silks those Epics like hot cakes, back in the 90s. I can't believe they're fetching $250 these days. Not worth it. For that money, id rather have a Yashica T4 Super. It had the Zeiss lens and "Super Scope" waist level finder, as well as weather sealing. Not as pocketable though, anf it of course lacks that smoove clamshell cover.

I like when you do the pictures of the cars but the best ones are the ones of the cars where you frame it to be very 1 dimensional. make a zine of all these

I had one of these years ago. I didnt like having no control of exposure in any way and the flash turning on everytime you open the camera done my head in. Its small, light with a fairly good lens but for me its not worth anywhere near $250.

Yeah I feel it's waaaay too overrated for what it is, as you know i've shot with a lot of epic zooms & honestly the images are probably just as sharp and the quality just as crisp as the MJU II but I also get the weather proofing on them. If you want the image quality at a fraction of the cost I would go with basically any of the stylus epic zooms, if size is an issue the Zoom 80 is an extremely compact camera, probably one of the smallest point & shoots i've used. I personally use the zoom 115 cuz I originally bought it for concerts but also don't want too much zoom. I've used the zoom 140 & 170 also and they all produce great images, but the downside is the camera body gets bigger as you go up in focal length. But honestly the zoom 80 is amazing. Probably not that much bigger than the MJU II honestly and it costs WAY less.

Evem tho ur video enforced a tone that dissuades people from getting the MJU 2, thanks to it ironically now I know im getting it, yeah the price tag is fucked up but what attracts me is how small and compact it is, im gonna travel to a third world country soon & i need a camera that doesnt scream for attention

A camera you frequently could find on European fleamarkets for 10-20 USD for less than 3 years ago is of course not worth the money for 250 considering that it can break any second. It’s a great camera when it works, but I’d never recommend anyone buying it for 250

@@markrestua1276 You sure can. I enjoy shooting the Infinity more but I bought a couple of remotes early on and the Epic does have that feature. I have several Olympus zooms the remote also works with and they are so slow that it could be handy to have. I can't say Ive used it often however. It seems like all that extra stuff defeats the purpose of a point and shoot.

Love the videos man! I have been watching your videos for a bit know you recommend the Minolta x700 but I am a bit stuck in between getting that or the canon A1, I found a mint condition Minolta x700 for 150 and comes with a warranty at a local shop. but the canon is cheaper like 100 also in mint condition but on eBay no warranty so I am just not sure on what to get, what would you get ?

Always go with the one with the warranty. These cameras are old and if someone is guaranteeing it, it's SO worth the extra $$.

The pics he took on this(mostly of cars) did not do this camera justice. You gotta try a different approach to using these cameras man. Instead of going into a neighborhood and shooting random things try actually shooting with a purpose. Anybody feel me on this?

Also, I would have liked him to have shot photos of objects/greenery between a distance of between, say, 18” to five feet. I have the same camera and it excels in this range in a wide range of conditions; the colours come out saturated (esp of subjects in bright shade or in the golden hour) and very sharp. Also the camera features a smart flash system that compensates/adjusts its intensity according to the subjects’ distance from the camera, resulting in portraits/group shots between 3 ft and 6 ft that come out sharp with rich and warm saturation and not washed-out with over-illumination. The flash system appears to figure out, in solo/group portraits (in the distance range above) their skin tone and adjust its intensity. For me the lens, its excellent performance at the distance range I write of, and its smart flash system are the most meaningfully valuable things that the Stylus Epic features!
