Have been out several times in the last 2 weeks photographing large insects with my OM1 set up. This camera coupled with the Olympus 300mm F4 are a fantastic combination for this type of photography. Not macro photography but frame filing shots of fast moving bugs like wasps , moths and butterflies. Tried to record a number of vlogs but the weather ruled that out so relieved to finally release this video.
Thanks for watching. Please leave a comment and if you are new please consider subscribing!🙏

Love your videos. As I have the same set up as you it’s really helpful to see how you turn out so many cracking shots…something for me to aim for!

Hello everybody. Thanks for stopping by. Just watched the video on my T.V and I think the zoom feature I tried with the photos actually makes them look pretty soft. Sorry about that.. Lesson learnt! Think it would work well for landscapes but not wildlife. Anyway say hi in the comments and take care. 😀👍🙏

Lovely shots Richard, I recently tried Dragon flies pro capture and SH2. Looking back I needed to go f8 or higher managed a few sharp ones though 👍

Thank you. Dragonflies are definitely a tough subject. F8 definitely worth a try. I often just play around trying different things including aperture and see what happens. Good luck next time!

The 40-150mm f2.8 is a great one for this as well .......having used both for bees I find the closer focus and zoom helps with location of the subject still doesnt disturb the bees. The 300mm f4 is brilliant for perched dragonflies who get spooked at closer distances!!!

Thank you. That 40-150 does look like a lovely lens. Never tried it though. Maybe one day 🙏👍😀

Nice video Richard. The OM1 link takes you to a lens cap for the fisheye lens ?

Hi Roger. Thanks for making the effort to look. Yes unfortunately I have tried to do it several times and I think it is a problem at Amazon's end. I should probably reach out and ask them to check it. I think the 300mm link works but yes the OM1 is not ideal. Thanks again anyway. Enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙏👍 😀

I have to agree with everything you said on this video. A telephoto is ideal for large Insects as you are that further away from them. Time capture is minimal and wind is an issue so it isn’t easy. I have just come back from Italy again and I found a patch just like you. Mine was more Insect productive but I didn’t take the care you take with your composition. Your images are far more professional but I am pleased with my results which is all that matters. I am quite old and, you may laugh, but I found the OM1 and 300 f4 too heavy for me. I am more than happy with my Panasonic 100-400 even though it lacks a bit of quality. Nobody sees my pictures apart from Flickr anyway so I do not have a large audience. Nice instructive video.

Hi and thank you. No of course I wouldn't laugh. When I get older this set up will be too heavy so I will get something lighter and smaller just like you. Photography should only be about the person taking the photos.. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or if it's worse or better then anyone else. I will head over to Flickr and check out your latest Italy pics. Thanks for the great comment👍🙏😀

Nice works as usual! I definitely will help out mate. Anyhow, did you really closed down to F10, F11 one some of those shots with OM-1? Or it is just FF equivalent DOF. Cheers.

Hello and thank you as always for your support. Yes I did. I have my go to settings for each type of photography that I do but if I have time at a location and the subject is challenging, which very fast moving insects are, then I mix it up and try other things to see if they can match my go to settings. I felt F4 was a little narrow to get everything in focus because they often flew at an angle away from me. If they flew parallel the whole body might have been in my field of focus but at an angle and F4 might only get a little bit in focus. But as always one has to factor in light, diffraction etc when stopping down..in these cases I think the loss of sharpness at F10 was worth it because I could get more of the wasp in focus. Hope this makes sense. But yes they are the real apertures I set on the camera. 😀🙏👍

That makes sense Richard considering how close and how fast it flew. Something for me to think about when doing insect in flight :-). Cheers...
