I am a little surprised to see a 150mm(equiv) lens described as a portrait lens. Obviously you *can* do a portrait from far away but usually portraits are taken from 75-100mm and a 150mm lens would be considered a low end telephoto.

i guess its a portrait lens for situations where you cannot go close enough. Animals you dont want to react to you, weddings where you dont want to disturb .. or just in general frame filling faces and whatnot. Those situations where you'd normally take a 70-200 equivalent but want high bokeh / low light performance. But i agree. 75mm is hardly still a portrait lens. Even with my 56mm sigma 1,4 i often need to step back more than i initially want to when taking pictures of people. There is an optimal distance for people to have nice reactions to you (and thus for the camera) and this lens is out of that range. If you instead are going for pictures where the subject is not looking at the viewer this is more fitting.

The idea that 75 to 100mm is the normal portrait length is an old idea from the days when that was often the longest lens people owned and the concept of the 75mm portrait length just stuck around long after the 70-200 f2.8 became the standard pro zoom and people started using longer lengths. In my pro Canon days I regarded 75mm to be too close, and preferred shooting head shots in the 180 to 200mm range. Of course it does require a good size studio but with a head shot you don't need to be all that far back. This Oly 75 is a great portrait lens for people like me but if you are only comfortable doing head shots at 75mm then it is not for you.
