Ah thank you! I love all things about photography so it’s an awesome system to shoot with for my line of work. There’s definitely some other amazing photographers out there shooting with the system in other genres. I guess they just don’t share online 😁

agreed. there's so many small primes in m43 that work great for street photography. from a marketing standpoint, they need some gen z/younger millennial people to rep the gear on KZbin so it looks at least as cool as other brands and builds hype. I just don't want om and m43 to die off.

@@danprocaccio Agreed! They are targeting my generation x with the majority of the cash thinking we all like bird photography. They definitely need to get some of the younger generations who are interested in street photography, portraits, etc.

To anyone wondering about OM-System/Olympus/M43 systems, THIS is the video you need to watch. I had to watch this several times over to be able to formulate adequate words expressing my gratitude towards this video. This is, without any doubt, a fantastic review. Not just of a lens, not just a camera- of a system, a way of photographing. I thank you, so, so much. Finally someone showing other things then "let's see how the camera focuses on this bird and this brick wall". I am genuinely in *awe* of the results you're showing. You do fantastic work- if I am ever half as skilled as you one day, I will count myself blessed. Thank you again and all the best from Norway. :)

Thanks so much for the kind words! All modern cameras are capable of incredible shots. You just need to work out the strengths and play to them. M4/3 cameras have so many strengths, I just choose to use those and push what i can out of it :)

I may just be a hobby photographer, this video really explains all of the reasons I used to buy an OM-1, instead of switching to Sony, or another full frame camera. I have back and neck problems, compressed discs, so it just makes sense. I can carry my small compact amazing camera in so many places that allows me to take some incredible photos.

Size and weight really do matter and that’s something people often overlooked by people buying into systems. The marketing heads of bigger cameras only push raw specs. A system should work with you, not against you 😁

It’s really inspiring to see professional work with Olympus gear… nature, birds, landscape are OK, but Olympus users need more niches (commercial, professional) to show how versatile is as a system. Thanks for show your work, it’s amazing.

Ha, thank you for the kind words! Every camera system has their strengths and weaknesses, but like any tool, if you practice enough, you can learn to harness the tool across multiple applications. Most brands choose to market their products as Do-it-all systems, while OM have cleverly chosen to focus on what the system is great at, and that's the outdoors and nature :)

I have an Olympus EM5 m2 + 17mm 1.2, 45mm 1.2 and 7-14mm 2.8 and your videos prove that it makes no difference which system you work on, the main thing is the ability to use them. Sir, I am a big fan of your work. I will second the comments of many people here. OM Systems needs to feature you more and the varied genres you work in to highlight the versatility of system. Not every one of their consumers are bird/nature photographers. I am curious. I am looking to do some urban evening video work shooting with the OM-1 combined with the M.Zuiko 17mm/1.8. Are there any cameras settings that you’d recommend? Thanks and regards Eric Charles Jones
@etchd_
@etchd_ Ай бұрын
Hi Eric, thanks so much for the kind words! It's a tricky one there as OM are deliberatly looking to hone in on their niche rather than compete with the other brands who are markeing that they do it all. There is just not enough users out there i think to warrant pushing the other genres. Who knows for the future though! In regards to video, I just leave it at h.265 (so you get 10-bit) and as I'm in Australia I shoot all audio and non slow mo clips at 25p and all slo-mo at 50p. Shutter 180degree. The low light face tracking AF is good, but haven't really tested it at night so I can't comment on that. I use manual focus quite a lot for video. Hope that helps. Matt.

@@etchd_ You're absolutely right about that. I happened to come across MFT with Olympus without really considering the advantages or disadvantages. I've always liked the quality of Zuiko lenses. The portability of the lenses was actually a key factor in my decision to join the system. During a photoshoot at a drag racing event, someone next to me had a 1DX with a 200mm lens. I had my 300mm with me and thought to myself that I wouldn't want to carry that heavy equipment around all day. The colors from the Olympus sensors are fantastic. I really like the look of MFT. While many people shoot with full-frame cameras, with my Olympus I always get a different look.

This was the very best video I've seen on this camera and the whole mft system in general! Thanks so much for showing us the real world use in so many different settings. I was especially fascinated by the Vivid Sidney part, as the low light capability is my major concern of further investing into my Olympus system. You use all the fast pro lenses for this, which obviously do a great job. But I am wondering, as they are both expensive and heavy: Do you think there is still the size and price benefit of mft compared to full frame when using these setups? I would be very glad if you @etchd or someone else could clarify this for me. Thank you ☺️

Only part way through this video but I am loving it - so comprehensive with fabulous images. Love to see how you are combining primes with zooms as I am considering selling a lot of my primes after buying the 12-40 f2.8 pro II but very much undecided. What a camera the OM1 is. I currently have the Pana G9 and Oly EM5iii but in a couple of years I'd love to own the OM1, cant believe it surpasses the EVF quality of the G9. Future request : I do wish it was possible to bracket the exposure and for the camera to create a combined IN CAMERA RAW or even jpeg rather than having to post process.

Hi there. Thanks so much for the kind words! Ahh that is a tricky one ha. I actually only use the 20mm when I want to take a single camera around and do small shoots. Otherwise, I always take the three 1.2 primes with me and use the 17mm. I like having something that is also a little wider, knowing I have other options that are narrower. I know that isn't likely a luxury you have, so the 20mm would be more than enough! Honestly, I love that 20mm and use it a hell of a lot! It's great for weddings :)

The fact you're using OM1 for commercial work is hella inspiring! I'm still struggling to make my photos look clean and tasty. May I ask you which software you use for image processing? If you use Lightroom classic - which profile? Whenever I open my RAW files in LR Classic the colors seem very off and muted even. I tried camera profile but it makes skin around nose red which is very wrong, too. Thanks in advance! I wish the were more pros who could showcase OM1 outside birds and macro

Hi mate! thanks for the love. I'm glad my work is giving you some inspiration! I only use Lightroom Classic. The colours should look muted and low contrast if you are shooting RAW? As that is the whole idea of RAW, to do post-production on the shots. I don't change any profiles, just leave it to automatically detect what the camera and lens is then I go about grading the shots or using presets i've made. What camera are you using? Are you shooting RAW? What version of Lightroom?

Hi mate, thanks for stopping by. The OM-1 is definitely an amazing camera for landscapes. Especially considering you get a narrower depth of field straight off the bat and can utilise longer lenses in your arsenal much easier. It's all about marketing really and how much you are already invested in a system that really makes it difficult for people to change systems. I totally understand that dilemma.

Question I sold my OM-1 for a Nikon Z63. And I don’t do videos, at all. But I was afraid that I was missing out on image quality. 20mpx vs 24mpx. And noise and lighting and Dynamic Range…. In the real world, by comparison, is there a difference in image quality? If not, then I’d probably just swap back to Olympus. I miss the in camera stacking, I miss the in-camera ND filters. And I’ve only printed up to a 28x36, and the image looks good (from my OM-1) I haven’t printed anything from my Nikon yet. What are your thoughts to this? I shoot lots of landscape, some wildlife (birds and stills), macros, and some Astro. I don’t do a lot of cropping in, but I do pixel peep. So, if I’m talking about a big difference vs slightly a little, then I’ll probably go back. Just looking for a professional opinion here. Thank you, Brian

Thanks so much for the kind words! I feel a lot of reviewers tell people about the equipment by just listing the specs. But it's far more beneficial to see what the camera can produce because that is objective rather than someones opinion. Thanks for the continued support. I hope I can continue to find time to make vids!

I’m looking to upgrade an old EM10 mk1 which has been great for what I needed ( smaller, lighter, less cumbersome compared to my Canon DSLR) so I’m considering the OM-1 mk1 and the 12-40 2.8 pro lens, (to start) mainly because I don’t want a massive camera to lug around on trips out, and because I already have a few lenses. The weather sealing is an obvious interest because I will be using it in a wide range of circumstances (street, travel, wildlife, beach, astrophotography ) in a more tropical environment. I’m not a professional, but I do need a good all rounder, that I can use if I do have to do product shots, photoshoots for fashion (I’m a graphic designer who does t-shirt graphics) This is a great video, and just what I was looking for to assure me that sticking with the M4/3 system is still a good choice.

Great to hear! you seem to be shooting a wide variety of subjects. Well done. This is the system for you if working in harsh environments. The 12-40mm is great. I would definitely recommend the Mark II though, so you ge the fluorine coating !

great feedback video, thank you for that. Can you make a video how you processed that real estate braketed images? Have you concidered using HDR feature instead of braketing? how different these final pics would be in post processing BKT vs HDR ?
@etchd_
@etchd_ 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the love! The HDR feature in the camera mean? I still don't like how the image is processed in-camera using that feature. I'd prefer to have more control over everything by doing it in Lightroom! I'm unsure of how much difference there would be, but you probably have more latitude to push and pull by bracketing. Plus, I often end up looking at one of the bracketed images and find the exposure is spot on so i won't need to do anything extra :)

Thank you so much for sharing. Best video about m4/3 I have seen in a long time. I use an OM-D EM-1 II paired with a 12-100mm. I really love my kit. Small, light and easy to carry. I do have a question since you also use a trusty OM-D EM-1 II. Would you say there is enough difference between the OM-1 and EM-1 II sensor to upgrade? I sometimes find there is a limit with low light capabilities of my EM-1 II.
@etchd_
@etchd_ 11 ай бұрын
Hi mate! glad you enjoyed the vid! You have the perfect camera lens combo for travel, that's for sure! I only use the E-M1 Mark II when I shot the underwater content. But now I have a housing for the OM-1 so won't be needing it. That being said, I would 100% be happy with the image quality of that sensor for most of the work that I do. With the OM-1 you get the speed and insane AF + computational features that you don't get on the E-M1 Mark II. Image quality wise though, most people probably wouldnt notice the difference. What you really need for low light is the 1.2 primes! the 12-100mm just isn't suited to dark settings :)

Cheers mate! never had an issue with 20MP. The majority of content is consumed on a tiny phone where 2mp images look great. Are you printing something that is like A0? if not, then I really dont see why you'd need more MP? I can't comment on what Robin has found. I haven't found any of those issues and you can see the variety of work I use the camera for. Remember, one person's review doesn't mean much until you test things out yourself in the style of shooting you personally do.

I had the OM-1 upon launch, used it for 6 months all over Snowdonia, the Coasts in Cornwall, Devon for jobs, but when it came to my concert and event stuff it was a bit of a fail, so sold it on and went back to FF. Hi mate, I'm not sure what you mean by how much post I did? That is an extremely broad question. Do you mean, did I shoot RAW and then process the images? if so, then yes, of course. I don't think there is a professional photographer out there who doesn't shoot RAW and edit their images. After all, that's what shooting RAW is for. As an OM SYSTEM Ambassador, I'm fortunate in that I can utilise their gear for free. That is one of the perks of being any form of ambassador/creative/athlete. I've had the OM-1 for about 18 months but for the last 10 months or so it's been unused, while my reliable EM1.2 gets the call when using m43. I find the OM-1 to have some interesting parlor tricks that may help your photography (depending on your skill level) but they do nothing to help my work. The ergonomics are poor . I'd expect a so-called adventure camera to be able to be used while wearing gloves. Not this one (if you want to use the front dial. Skip it. (I'm not an ambassador thus not influenced by any agreements with manufacturers to keep the perks flowing.)
@etchd_
@etchd_ 10 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have already made your mind up about the camera and it's apparent short comings for your particular use. Why do you still have it? Seems like a waste of money to have it just sit there and not be used. If using the camera with gloves is such a high priority for you, why did you buy it without testing this out yourself? I mean, would you buy a pair of trail running shoes based on someone's review/opinion that they fit their feet perfectly and are super comfortable? No, you'd go to a shop and try them on, using the socks you would use for trail running. While I am an ambassador for OM SYSTEM, it means sweet nothing in how i use the camera and for what purposes. Hence why I film my commercial video work with other brands that suit the job better. Yes, I have access to the equipment which helps in most cases, but in the end if you dedicate the time and effort to learn a camera and how it works, you will get awesome photos regardless. There is no one size fits all camera in regards to features or ergonomics. It's up to you to make the right choice, and it sounds like you haven't!

@@etchd_ The mistake I made was buying the OM-1 when it first came out and there was a waiting list. I should have returned it. I won't make that mistake again, nor will I buy OMD gear again. I cannot in good conscience sell my OM-1 given its repair history and how it fails to be reliable. I have ethics. You seem very defensive when it comes to honest criticism. Are you afraid the truth might affect your access to free gear? I have no affiliation with any camera company. It's important for prospective consumers to have honest information from people who don't have a relationship with camera companies (i.e. ambassadors).
