Don't be humble. Modesty isn't in its place. These are really lovely pictures of amazing birds. Of course it's not an everyday adventure but what a great opportunity to test your new gear. With so many pictures to choose from it's a battle to find the right one. Somehow like a fairytale come true. I really enjoyed it, doesn't mean those "common" backyard birds have a charm on its own. Great there are good nature loving Bird photographers. It's not only the gear.

Agree with you on the full frame advantages for resolution, IQ etc., however, the Nikons don’t compete with either the Olympus or the Sonys on AF and BIF - my D850 has great action AF but it doesn’t match the best of mirrorless capability; my Z6ii AF is slow and the subject detection inadequate. I’m keeping my Nikons for landscape, astro and street. The OM-1 takes over for birds, wildlife.

You have quite a few unique and beautiful images. I've noticed the OM1 has been well received by the press and is sometimes mentioned in such company as the Nikon Z9, Sony A1, and Canon R series cameras. Considering the predictions that MFT was dead or on its way out this is quite an accomplishment. I use a Lumix G9 with the 100-400mm lens and I'm quite appreciative of a lighter kit that still offers a very long reach. I'll look forward to future videos from you.

Thanks for the kind comment about the images. The 100-400mm lens is very good for the price. Its not one of the `pro lenses` so although Pro Cap will work with this lens, you do not get the full 50fps and autofocus using SH1. I think you only get 20fps and autofocus on the 100-400, which is still very good . If you check out Mike Lanes recent video on Pro Cap, it explains which Olympus lens give the full 50fps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4vcZ397rL1sntk. For use in a hide, the flexibiltiy of a zoom is a big advantage, and I have made a video comparing the 100-400 to the 300mm F4. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZi4apevrtBqZ9E Bear in mind that the 100-400 is only F6.3 at 400mm. Its great in good light, but in dull weather you will need to up the ISO. Hope this helps. One day I will get up to your hide. It looks a great set up.

Another helpful and informative video, thank you. One question which arose at about the 11:40 mark was what do you focus on when using Pro Capture for the diving gannet? Are you following it in and then fully depressing the shutter button once you see it has entered the water or something else?
@rogerhance5883
@rogerhance5883 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment Alan. Regarding the Gannet diving using Pro Cap. I am using a faily wide angle lens and prefocusing roughly on where I think the birds are going to be diving. With a wide angle on the Olympus you will get a fair bit of depth of field anyway, and I have stopped it down to F4 or F5.6. I am looking where the fish has been thrown, and I then compose at that spot. I watch for the dive using the flip out screen. I half press the shutter so pro cap is running. As soon as I see a bird dive, I fully press the shutter. That way you get it every time.
@alanryder
@alanryder 2 жыл бұрын
@@rogerhance5883 Top answer - thank you. Focussing on the dive point is what I sort of expecting but just couldn't work out how you were getting it right! The DoF tip makes a lot of sense too - focussing on where the fish went into the water is something that didn't occur to me! 🤦

@rogerhance5883

All the pictures in the first half of the video are taken from the cliffs. You park in the RSPB Bempton Cliff car park, walk through the visitors centre, and follow the short pathway down to the cliffs. You can either go left or right. There are plenty of viewing platforms each way and its best to walk around them all to see which is the best. It depends on wind and closeness of the birds. Its best to photograph the birds flying into the wind. Watch out for tree sparrows which are fairly easy to photograph, often near the visitors centre picnic area. Good luck.

Thanks for the kind comment. Quite a few of the images are cropped slightly. Its not easy keeping a flying bird perfectly central in the frame, so you have to accept that with some images you are going to have to recompose in post using the cropping tool. I try to fill the frame as much as possible. The only problem is that they fly so fast that you will often end up `clipping ` part of a wing !

@@maxiguppy It depends on how much you crop. If its only for the internet, then you can crop quite heavily, and it will still be O.K. . I will regularly crop for KZbin, slide shows and social media. You can still crop 1/3rd of the file size of an Olympus file and produce good quality A3 prints. I think there is a lot of rubbish talked about the need for having full frame, although thats only my opinion. Watch this video of Mike Lanes kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn_NYqCtqJeGfa8 Its in two parts and you need to watch both. Thank very much Colin. I think there is a lot of rubbish talked about needing huge mp files. I can print to A3 and even A2 from Olympus files.

It is a tragedy in the SW with the appearance of avian flu. Dead and dying gannets and gulls turning up on beaches and even pavements and roads in towns.
