what is the difference between the om606.96 and om606.12 rods and pistons? I've read people say that the 606.12 has weaker rods and pistons, but I'm not sure if they know for a fact or if it's speculation. I wanted to ask someone who is more likely to know first hand what the difference is. I have an opportunity to buy a Mercedes with a 696.12, but I don't think I want to if the rods are substantially more weak. I will be using cng, so the fuel delivery isn't the biggest issue. I also don't mind turbocharging it. I just don't want to deal with the bottom end.

I meant 606.12, not 696.

+tannersword1 Hello, The n/a version of the 606 has in fact weaker rods and different pistons, also it doesn't have the underpiston oil squirters for better piston cooling. The best way to go if you want high power is to go for the turbo 606. If you only want 250-300 hp I think the n/a 606 can do the job. Have fun,

+Burghel Liviu, yeah I don't need much hp. Do you or anybody on here know what torque and hp the 606.12 can reliably run? If I can achieve the factory output of the 606.96 or slightly more, I'd be happy

+tannersword1 You can achieve 300 hp from that engine with no trouble. However, over that figure things might get messy.
