Omah Lay's personal definition of soso in an interview: "When I was making the song, the only thing that came to my mind was Soso. I don't know why. I could have easily said alcohol, cognac, or smoke, or weed, or something that helps ease my pain but I decided to call Soso, I don't know why. And it kinda makes a lot of sense that it's Soso. Soso most of my time is money. Honestly, I can't even lie. Soso a lot of the time is money. But sometimes too, it could be girl. Very fine girl. Uniport babe or Unilag babe. Those girls, their head dey touch. I like those girls die." He later said: "Soso could mean anything to you, but it's the name of a girl. It's a Port Harcourt name; a Kalabari girl's name. When I say, ‘Soso, take my pain away’, I want her to come and dance for me. Let her come and do whatever she can do for me, and take this pain away. She’s not my girl. She’s my friend's little sister, but she grew up, boom, and she started doing stuff, man. She just grew up on Snapchat and Instagram and just started doing things. The melody on ‘Soso’ is spirit; it’s Highlife. When I listen to those old highlife singers, it feels like they get their melodies from the spirit themselves. And that's where I always want to tap from. I made sure that I connected with my ancestors." Hope this helps!!

Obviously you wouldn't expect him to come all out and open on the REAL meaning, do you? The damage to his personality, music career etc will be suicidal. Plus if you know about cults and occult, they operate in secrecy, codes and symbols. It's a no brainer. Music and videos these days is not as innocent as we think they are.

Just found your page and absolutely love it. Even as a Nigerian, there's part of the songs I don't understand, so it's great to hear you talk about the meaning of these songs. A few notes here: - When he talks about 'oshimiri', it's not just the river goddess. He's talking about mermaids (more specifically what we call maami water). So, 'water no get enemy, till you fall for Oshimiri' is more like everyone loves water until you fall for a mermaid (maami water)'. Obviously, 'water no get enemy' is also a refrence to Fela's song of the same name. - When he says 'I poto poto my eyes', it's a double entendre. So yes he's crying, but also, he's talking about getting drunk and high. The 'dirty eye' here is redness from alcohol/weed. That's why the next line is 'ten shots' and 'high rise' until he 'touch God'. Other than that. Love the video and your work in general

Hi!! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out! I love love love your commentary. I didn’t know oshimiri also meant mermaid/Maami water and the poto poto being like his eyes are dirty from the drinks and all makes 100% sense. I enjoy when others contribute and give insight. Thanks for the compliments ☺️

Poto poto is slang for mud in Warri, Port Harcourt pidgin and you know mud is often dirty, red in colour so him saying I poto poto my eye means his eyes are muddy/red from drinking or weed smoking.. Omah is one of the best lyricist/songwriters in the industry rn. Very talented guy

Your second paragraph isn't accurate. When we say: "Water has no enemy until you fall for Oshimili" Every one of us uses water and can not ignore or make enemies with water until we get into the trap of the water goddess (Oshimili). He then goes further to say he breaks the water goddess's commandment which confirmed the earlier statement Water has no enemy until you break (fall into the trap) the water goddess commandment.

@@Simbihawt I mean the word SOSO is only used when pleading for something very important to your life and the word OSHIMIRI there is a river goddess mostly in part of river state like KALABARI, OKRIKA,BONNY and maybe ANDONI. so only God knows who he is pleading with to take his pain away. And he also said "I don pray, maami I don break, commandments" and (maami water) is a mermaid (river goddess). You can see that the song is just too deep spiritual

You really did justice to the lyrics of the song but to shade more light to the meaning of the lyrics, where he said I don pray oma nme actually means that I have prayed and it won't happen ( oma nma is Igbo language and oshimiri is also Igbo language which means ocean, he's literally saying that water has no enemy till you fall into ocean and potopoto in Igbo language means mud and in the Eastern part of Nigeria when you say I potopoto my eyes ,that simply means I'm very high on something, it might be alcohol weed drugs on something else. There's so many ignorant comments on here my goodness. Soso is a common nickname for Ijaw girls (it's my nickname as well). Omah Lay is from Port Harcourt, a city in the Niger Delta region, where he likely knew a lot of girls with the nickname Soso growing up. On the surface, he's literally asking a girl named Soso to take his pain away. Deeper, those of us in that region (Niger Delta) have a marine-based culture. Water is important to our traditions and way of life. Water is healing, so it's common to go to the water when we need healing or blessings in life like Omah Lay did in his music video. Nigerians who aren't from the waterside have an ignorant and irrational fear of water. It's just nature. Just as hinterland groups have earth-based cultures, we on waterside have water-based cultures. Stop letting colonial mindset demonize your own people. Christmas trees are European Pagan traditions, yet you have no problem putting it up in your house and churches every Christmas-and this practice came from the white Christians you want to emulate. Rest.

I checked online and only saw articles that came out after the song was released. Some have said soso is a god/goddess but since this is his song, I only intend to say the meaning that he says in his interviews (look at my pinned comment). He is feeling pain on regrets on selling his soul. He joins no religion now. But rather soul sold. That was why He said "I don't pray Mohammed I don't care commandments" Soso is the name He had given to the spirit inside Him now after selling his soul so he tells Soso to take away the regrets and pain but it can't be possible. These boys and gals put so much into their trade that it leaves me with so much hope for nigeria and Africa as a whole. My joy in life is seeing nigerians seeing that video for the first time, and the look on their face when "soso" comes into frame. Ohh I get you. That “don” there is Nigerian pidgin (broken English). Separate from the word “don’t (do not)” and it actually means do or to have done something. I’m not sure where you are from but a lot of times in America we use the word “done” in a sentence like “I done told you before.” It’s the same thing pretty much conceptually but the accent and pronunciation can make “don” sound like “don’t”… Another word in Nigerian pidgin to be mindful of is “na”. This means it is or like to be and does not mean “no” or how Americans say “nah”…Great question honestly and thank you for asking and pointing this out. I’ll do a better job at breaking this down as I often overlook it at times.

Lol it really depends on how you use it but usually it’s like a verb. Like if someone or something does something to make you feel good or happy. So if I met a guy and he has a beautiful smile I can tell my friend his smile gingers me. Or if I listen to a great preaching I can say the message gingered me (motivated in a way/inspired). The spicy I used here is like me saying spice him up to make him feel lively. So it can def mean something sexual here. Does this make sense?

Hey which part- I don pray mami or I don break commandment. Or are you saying instead of break he says pray again?
