At the same time when the first assault waves landed on Omaha Beach, three companies of the 2nd Ranger Battalion landed on the eastern side of Pointe-du-Hoc and began scaling the cliff. Meanwhile, a second assault wave approached the coast of Omaha Beach, suffering almost as many casualties as the first one.

Thank you for this. I served with A co. 1-18 and knew my battalion landed on D-day, but had never seen the landings in such detail. Till the last round!

Great narrative with excellent detail. Only one omission which was how the US Rangers got their motto, "Rangers Lead the Way!" General Cota was the person who tagged the rangers with this motto and it stuck. I quote from Rangers in World War II by Robert W. Black," ... Ranger Mike Rehm who was nearby, (Cota was talking with the 5th Ranger CO), Rehm recalled Cota approaching and saying: "What outfit is this?" When given the reply "Rangers," Cota responded. "Well, goddamn it, if you're Rangers, get up and lead the way!" Give's me goose bums every time I read it!

I’ve been thinking of adding that to the video, but it’s hard to put quotes using an artificial voice.

@@FromtheBattlefields Just do it, to hell with it being grammatically correct. I don't think General Cota would mind. Or write out "and I quote" for the arty voice. Also by the way 5th Ranger CO, Col. Schneider, moved the 5th Ranger landing on the fly from Dog Green to Dog White saving a lot of lives.

Another great video FTB! Will you consider doing a video on the Sakhalin & Kuril Islands campaign? Since they feature a lot of naval landings from an often over looked chapter in ww2. Also any chance of doing a vid on Attu and Kiska?

Thanks, I already had an idea to cover Red Army's amphibious landings, but it is hard to find a related photo and video material. It is an interesting topic, and I hope to be able to make a video about it.

@@FromtheBattlefields I hope you can do so as you'd definitely be the first YTer to do an indepth video on this with visuals. Also could I ask if you'd do any naval battles or landings from the middle or upper Solomons campaign like the battle of vella la vella? Again I don't think there's even a video on it yet.

Excellent coverage in detail. But over confidence bordering on arrogance plagued allied high command right thought to the end of 1944. Reality fell on them with the failure of Market Garden and then the Ardennes battle and SHEAF came to realise that conquering the Germans, specially on German soil would be a long and costly affair. Eisenhower and Montgomery proved to be inferior tactical commanders where long supply lines and exhausted troops slowed the advance. Many consider that the allies should have gone east from Normandy and liberated Le Havre instead of west to Cherbourg, and that would have brought supplies much closer to the front as it advanced. Patton pleaded with Eisenhower to Instruct Montgomery to do this, but it fell on deaf ears. If they had listened to him, Operation Market Garden may have succeeded because it was logistics and transport that caused its failure. The two stand out commanders in the field turned out to h be Patton and Cota, but Bradleys lack of confidence and Eisenhower's disputes with Montgomery, slowed it all down.
