Omar Alshogre testified before the #UN Security Council meeting on June 29th, 2022, on the situation in Syria. He urged all member states to take action against the Assad regime's heinous human rights violations, avoid normalization with the regime, and stand with the Syrian people fighting for freedom and justice. #syria
He called out #russia and #iran for their complicity in killing, torturing, and displacing innocent Syrians who dared to speak out against the Assad regime with the hope of achieving freedom and democracy.
He called out the #uae and Jordan for turning a blind eye to the Syrian regime's human rights violations by normalizing relations with Assad.
He called out #jordan for refusing to provide aid to over 30,000 innocent internally displaced people living in the Rukban camp. Rukban, located near the Syrian-Jordanian border, has been besieged by the Syrian regime and its allies since 2018.
He called out the #unitedstates for limiting itself to empty statements and no actions. Furthermore, he called on Brazil, Mexico, Ireland, Gabon, Ghana, and Kenya to take a clear stand in support of the Syrian people.
He thanked #turkey and #lebanon for opening the country to millions of Syrian refugees. However, he asked both countries to take action against the rising level of discrimination and racism that Syrian refugees face daily.
Finally, he reminded the Council of the cross-border aid resolution that provides humanitarian aid to millions of Syrians in the northwest and northeast Syria. The reauthorization of the resolution, which will expire on July 10th, heavily depends on Russia's vote.
In his closing, Alshogre asked all member states to take the following three actions:
1. He asked all member states to pressure Russia to extend Bab Al-Hawa and open all other cross-border points to allow humanitarian aid to reach over 4.1 million Syrians.
2. He asked members to follow Germany's lead and prosecute the Syrian regime and its allies in their national courts.
3. Lastly, he asked all countries to fight with the Syrian people and those arbitrarily detained and tortured by the Syrian regime.
